T&T...The "SOB" law will come down on crime'
Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander says the newly proclaimed special operations legislation will be implemented with an “element of surprise” and strategically deployed by law enforcement against criminal elements. He warned yesterday that the law will come down on them like a “tonne of bricks”. President Christine Kangaloo has proclaimed the Special Operations Act, 2026, bringing all sections of the Government’s controversial new crime-fighting legislation into force from October 6.
The act establishes seven policing districts across Trinidad and Tobago and creates the legal framework for special operations by police officers, with provision for military assistance from members of the Defense Force. Alexander issued a warning to criminals that the legislation will now be used against those intent on creating mayhem.
Alexander criticized the People’s National Movement (PNM) Opposition over what he described as its insistence that police operations must be publicized. He said he had never heard Opposition Members of Parliament urge constituents involved in criminal activity to stop. “I never heard that up to now, but I heard them talk about oppression and interfering with people’s rights and privileges, but the same criminal element and gang members have been doing that for years—oppressing and torturing law-abiding people,” he said.
