The hypocrisy of Dave Cameron Comments

"Hey Dehring: Ask Cameron..." (The Current Financial Crisis)

The mention of Chris Dehring (the current CEO of CWI) stems from an ongoing financial crisis. CWI recently announced severe belt-tightening measures, including a 25% pay cut for contracted international players, shortened franchise deals, and paused regional tournaments due to a projected US$26 million loss. Dehring publicly stated that West Indies cricket is at a "critical crossroads" and cannot simply rely on regional governments for financial safety nets.

The CARICOM Meeting & "We are a private company"

My remark about CARICOM refers to a major historical flashpoint during Cameron's presidency (2013–2019).

  • The Conflict: In 2015, a CARICOM governance review panel recommended the immediate dissolution of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB, now CWI) due to an "obsolete governance framework".
  • The "Private Company" Defense: Cameron fiercely resisted CARICOM's intervention. He famously argued that CWI is a private, independent sports business organization (historically incorporated as a company limited by guarantee in the British Virgin Islands) and that regional politicians had no legal right to dictate its structure or dissolve its board.
  • My Critique: I am essentially saying: "Remind Cameron of the time he told CARICOM to mind their own business because CWI was a private company. Now that CWI is broke, regional cricket is suffering."

"Now he is claiming CWI should leave ICC cricket?"

Appearing on the Mason and Guest radio show in Barbados, Dave Cameron shocked the cricket world by suggesting the West Indies should consider pulling out of international cricket entirely.

  • His Logic: Cameron argues that the ICC’s revenue-sharing model heavily favors the "Big Three" (specifically India). He claimed it actually costs CWI money to tour India while India makes upwards of $100–$200 million from the broadcast rights. His stance is that CWI should pull out and tell India to "play against themselves" until the ICC fixes the wealth distribution.
  • The Irony: Critics (and the Jamaica Gleaner editorial board) have pointed out that during his own presidency, Cameron actually voted in favor of the 2014 "Big Three" restructuring that established this unequal revenue system, expecting CWI to get bigger financial trickledown crumbs that never materialized.

"Wonder why they kicked him out..."

Cameron’s six-year tenure was deeply polarizing. He frequently clashed with high-profile players (leading to massive player strikes and a breakdown in relationships with icons like Darren Sammy and Chris Gayle) and regional prime ministers.

In 2019, the territorial boards revolted, and Cameron was voted out as President, losing the election to Ricky Skerritt. Now I am mockingly noting that while Cameron acts like he has "all the answers" now that he is on the outside, his actual time in office was defined by the very financial and structural instability the region is still trying to dig itself out of.

So Cameron STFU....
