I submit that Gayle's captaincy was never underrated.
Everyone know he was a very good captain.
Like Pollard, Gayle captaincy was affected by Management fights.
Gayle like Pollard was denied opportunities by poor CWI/WICBC leadership.
When Gayle was first appointed captain,
it was only because of injuries to the then selected captain.
Trying to understand Gayle as captain is like trying to rate Viv or Sobers in T20I.
I used to be one of the biggest Gayle critics,
but it had nothing to do with his captaincy.
I was very anti:
- his party lifestyle, (same with Lara especially, and Sarwan)
- his refusal to maintain peak fitness (I blame on his partying)
- his leadfootness, which he overcame by straight hitting and hand-eye coordination
- his selfishness (I would not elanorate on that here out of respect for him)
I mostly admired Gayle's:
- Toughness (like most Jamaicans)
- His batting strength
- His entertainment value
- His knowledge of the game (tactics etc)
- His ability to bring team together
All n all, my point is that everyone know that Gayle was a very good captain
whose true potential was not seen due to poor CWI leadership.
