WI T20 star named Mumbai Indians head coach
“Trinidad and Tobago does not simply produce talent to compete on the world stage, we produce leaders who help shape it.” That was the message from Sport and Youth Affairs Minister Phillip Watts following Kieron Pollard’s appointment as head coach of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians for the 2027 season.
Watts described Pollard’s elevation to the prestigious role as an outstanding milestone in his career and a proud moment for T&T, saying the 39-year-old’s journey should inspire young people to pursue opportunities beyond playing. Pollard was named head coach for the 2027 season, days after Mumbai Indians parted ways with former head coach Mahela Jayawardene. “His journey with the Mumbai Indians, from an influential player to batting coach and now head coach, reflects the confidence the franchise has placed in his experience, cricketing knowledge and leadership,” Watts said in a statement.
Pollard said he was eagerly looking forward to taking on the responsibility, having progressed from player to batting coach during his time with the franchise. “It is an honour to take on the role of head coach of Mumbai Indians. MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me,” he said in a statement. Pollard added that his experience in both roles had given him an understanding of the team’s expectations. “I look forward to working closely with the players and support staff, building on the team’s legacy, helping our talent grow and giving the Paltan many more reasons to celebrate,” he said.
