CaribbeanCricket.com Jun 19, 2004, 7:10:01 PM

BREAKING NEWS: The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has dumped Sir Viv Richards from the senior selection panel. The dramatic removal of the selection committee chairman follows a week of intense lobbying by the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA), aided by captain Brian Lara, for Richards to be replaced. Former Guyana off-spinner Clyde Butts will join the panel, which will now be chaired by Joey Carew. More changes needed Getting rid of Viv will not solve much

littlemaster Jun 19, 2004, 7:18:56 PM

I think the writing was on the wall for a while now. I do not think He and Lara were getting on. Logie and Greenidge should resign. Lets see how our performances improve without any 'PRESSURE' and 'INTIMIDATION' from Viv. Thanks for your efforts Viv:

I thank Viv for his many great innings. I truly hope this is the last I have seen of Viv. The era of Bullies are over. I know by the time I return from church tommorow many will be cussing but again I say GOODBYE VIV.

In my opinion this is a good start but not good enough. Perhaps it shows that WICB are clearing out starting at the top (I won't get my hopes up). Here's hoping that the changes are on a larger scale once this two-month selection committee period is done. Now calling Ms "Viv-een-going-anywhere" Christine.............

DAVE400 Jun 19, 2004, 7:26:20 PM

Sad to see viv dropped from the selection panel....but if the reports which stated that players were being intimidated by selectors and if viv was pinpointed as the culprit..then ..good riddance ..a selector must know his place ...viv therefore needs a human relations course.....regardless of his status in windies cricket .....and that goes for any other individual.......viv did not take no disrespect from anyone then he must also treat individuals with respect....

The WICB has opted for what is being described as "interim selection committees" for the next two months pending the conclusion of the review of the management structure of the West Indies team that was conducted by vice president Val Banks.

Seems like Lara is running the whole show now...with Joey as new chairman... Good luck!

For those of us who have been around WI cricket since Viv playing days no that he is uncivilised when it comes to dealing with his fellow players. So we being a banana republic appoint him a selector and have him interface with players. Which other selectors who had much better interpersonal skills were in the face like Viv? None that I know I maybe wrong? It is too late for Viv to go on any course. It was not given when he was captin when his interpersonal skills were piss poor. Our mandate is the People Principle -the highlest level of incompetence.

In reply to SamlordPirate: If Lara is behind this beyond having already voiced his opinion on issues within the selection process (i.e. if he has been whining like a spoilt child) and beyond perhaps being a witness to the public threats directed at players (hopefully witnesses were called upon by WIPA during it's investigations) then it is wrong wrong wrong.

jacksprat Jun 19, 2004, 7:46:48 PM

Massa Day Done ! It matters not whether Massa is white or comes in a darker hue. Richards' uncouth bully boy tactics had no place in a professional set-up. One does not instill discipline by being loud and vindictive and berating players. Richards was a great player but out of his league as administrator. No tears will be shed by me because of his departure

rikiniki Jun 19, 2004, 7:49:13 PM

In reply to Bootsie: What nonesense u talkin. This whole issue doh have all to do wid lara pal.

CowLasher Jun 19, 2004, 7:49:17 PM

Oh well, now I expect West Indies to beat England 4-0 in the upcoming Test series and to win the ODI competition. This team now can't complain about intimidation from Richards unless its from the commentary box. Yall wonder why this team is not performing? Here's a hint from a column in Sunday's Telegraph:

He presumably wants them to talk cricket, too, though after the recent whispers surrounding the position of Sir Vivian Richards, whose position as chairman of selectors was under discussion by the West Indies Board of Control yesterday following unofficial complaints by players over his aggressive treatment of them, such talk might disrupt his plans for a well-ordered, respectful unit.

BERTRAND Jun 19, 2004, 7:55:22 PM

Officially, the board said Richards committed himself to doing commentary for the BBC during the current West Indies tour to England and, on that basis, he was unavailable to continue his role on the selection committee.
I will go with this since; all the other information seems like gibberish and fodder for the neurologically starved.

Bootsie Jun 19, 2004, 7:56:09 PM

In reply to Rikiniki: Then I think you agree with me Rikiniki (god help me!). I am saying it is wrong if he is behind it beyond the two points which I outlined. I have not said that he is behind it beyond that. If action was taken as a result of more than two separate incidences then it is good to see WICB at last acting like a responsible organisation and not putting up with abuses of power based on who the abuser is. All those who have done the wrong thing by acting this way ought be watching their backs now. Read as "if the WICB were to apply this mode consistently, then your boy Lara would be in trouble!"

rikiniki Jun 19, 2004, 8:07:19 PM

In reply to Bootsie: i understand what u are saying, and nobody is above the law. lara did get away with alot. but to be honest, i really believe that he is trying his best. the problem is not only with individuals, but as my sometimes wise fellow posters say, it's the system. our system is old, colonial, and ineffective. a selector has no place scolding players. his job is to select. i am sure that there are other issues. most of which i do not know about. let's see how it unfolds.

BERTRAND Jun 19, 2004, 8:11:48 PM

How would Lara be in trouble when according to some of the very informed[with sarcasm], he is the one swinging the biggest stick? Some of you should really make up your mind in which direction you want to point the finger. Just cannot stand these comments based solely on allusions and it is quite nauseating.

rikiniki Jun 19, 2004, 8:15:16 PM

TanteMerle Jun 19, 2004, 8:23:22 PM

Fack Viv. I saw him when he was first appointed cappo ah de Combined Islands squad I believe in 1980. He was playing at kensington versus Bim and Telston Payne make a big hundred (140). While Viv was bowling, he elbowed Payne or deliberately blocked his path each time Payne tried a quick single. me and mi bwoys in de old A and B stand stockpiled some bottled fa viv ass if he had ran out Payne like dat. I was present near de dressing room during de lunch break and you should hear how Viv was behaving towards his team-mates. He is an uncouth bully. This is a new era, where the varous Human rights legislation is upon us. You have to treat players like humans. If you neva played cricket, ya probably won't understand. There'e nuttin worst dan team-mates (or management) talking down to ya when ya struggling fa form. Ya no what, if he is a selector, wha de fack he doing wid de team on tour anyway. Duh ain't gat a manager and head coach fa dat. Fack Viv, great batsman, poor everyting else. Good riddance to bad rubbish. SLP, Logie and Grenidge should not resign, they should be fired. get rid ah all ah dem from de old bwoy club. We need to start afresh. This is a good step fa Windies cricket. REMEMBER: Good player does not necessarily mean good coach or manager or administrator. That's West indies biggest problem.

In reply to littlemaster: I totally agree with u little master. This thing ain't start just now u know, is since hooper time cause viv didn't want lara as captain cause he knew what would happen and look what lara got we in, imagine Ireland beating we. Viv stands for discipline and lara hates that, he's and ownway lil' child and carew and greenidge give he his own way. Is a total trini thing. Remember what he did to harper? Lara tearin' up Windies cricket.

Bootsie Jun 19, 2004, 8:56:19 PM

In reply to Chico: That's not what I was saying Chico, not even by a longshot. What I said was if Lara was behind it beyond the points I outlined....i.e. Lara has a personal grudge and wanted to bring Richards down and went all out to see it happen..that is wrong. And that is what SLP was alluding to in his post. If the decision was made based on Richards' heavy-handed, bullying tactics and his going outside of his duties by wanting to hand-pick the final XI for a test match on an overseas tour then it is absolutely the right. Of course, everything I have said is based on speculation of what the actual reason/s for the decision was/were. I am extremely confident that it has nothing to do with Richards having signed up to commentate on the WI vs England tour. A man with Richards' temperament, ego and operating style is not one to shy away from a battle. I honestly think he was shown the door by the WICB, but we are yet to know - and may never know - why.

Yamfoot Jun 19, 2004, 8:57:15 PM

I had always heard that when Viv was captain, he used to cow down players like Hooper, which put him under pressure, and could be one of the reasons he underperformed.

BERTRAND Jun 19, 2004, 9:08:28 PM

Look it is already Sunday and I have checked all the papers in the region and some of the papers overseas and I haven't seen a single word publish to corroborate this story published on cc.com's front page. If someone has any other information on this issue, post a link please!

Unknown Jun 19, 2004, 11:13:24 PM

Have anyone on dis board ever made Viv angry ? Well face to face i have & he is very intimidating . Still some players need shaking up, dat's a fact. Things dat work in other test playing countries will not prove a sucess in our region. Some people you can't "cuddle" dem to great things but some you can. Anyway Lara is proving to be bigger than Windies cricket. Viv vs Lara..... only one winner !!!!!!!

archangel Jun 20, 2004, 1:00:27 AM

I really want to know what this 'intimidation' is all about. We have to put things in context. As a teacher, I know that there is a thin line between what is considered intimidationor fear and respect. Which is it in this case? This move, honestly, I see as the further degredation of West Indies cricket. The clique has conquered. There is no change taking palce in West Indies cricket. Without change, there will be no progress, only stagnation. Let's face it, for WI cricket to improve there has to be a drastic overall. Can't say I am a Viv fan but I feel that people like Joey Carew still in charge is just a sham. Trinidad really has taken over. Sorry for the rest of the Caribbean, in particular, people from the small islands. I know VIv tried to project them. Lara has no opposition now. Let's see what happens from here.

You people are something else. If what you are saying is true about the coach finally getting some authority to back up his responsibility, are you saying that you want to fire the encumbant without giving hime a chance to see what he can do? I wonder how you would feel if you were in a job, any job and that happened  Chuspe!

chico Jun 20, 2004, 3:12:10 AM

This thread is a 'plant', designed to boost the ratings. Hence the inclusion of a Lara factor.

Bootsie Jun 20, 2004, 3:18:11 AM

Why do you think the story would be a plant?

Baje Jun 20, 2004, 3:30:09 AM

I believe people should be rated on job performance. If you are going to fire Viv for poor selection policies, then you need to fire all 3 selectors. If Viv is being fired for bullying, then the only reason he was allowed to bully was because of his superiors. Selectors should never be in direct contact with players they have to select or drop. It allows for intimidation or favouritism. The WICB should have told Viv and company where the lines were.

camos Jun 20, 2004, 3:36:40 AM

Can't say I am going to miss this guy with his pre emancipation management style, but good luck and I hope you learned something here.

Bluebird Jun 20, 2004, 3:37:39 AM

Good riddance Viv. You have done nothing for WI cricket as a selector. As chairman ,you you seem to have no clue as to what type of team to select. Intimidation to players will not work, which also means you have no future as a coach. You should stick to enjoying cricket from the sidelines. Maybe a couple of spinners will get a chance now instead of loading the team with young, inexperience fast bowlers. ONE MORE THING TO ALL YOU CRITICS OUT THERE, STOP BASHING LARA, HE IS NOT THE REASON FOR WHERE WI CRICKET IS AT THE MOMENT. ALSO REMOVING HIM FROM THE CAPTAINCY WILL NOT HELP THE TEAM OR SOLVE WI CRICKET PROBLEMS. Continue grooming Sarwan for a couple years and then think about changing the captain.

Is Viv doing BBC commentary or not? Well he was on the BBC commentator's team for the BBC in 2000 so it seems perfectly logical. Can a selector do this? No he can't. So there is a clear conflict of interest. Why does it have to be anything else? Truly sad - Viv made the wrong decision here.

WOW!!!!........ 8O

DAVE400 Jun 20, 2004, 4:04:34 AM

After lloyd's exit as captain, many west indian players left during viv's reign as captain....ever wondered why? ..he shortened the careers of older players, he MUST not be allowed to do it to the younger ones....

kami Jun 20, 2004, 4:35:15 AM

Do I take it then that everybody is happy that Carew is now Chairman of Selectors? I ask this in the light of the many charges levelled at him on this very Mb or is it a case of hating Viv more?

cricket_jumbie Jun 20, 2004, 4:38:16 AM

no kams, but the operative word is interim

crapaud Jun 20, 2004, 4:54:07 AM

The Sunday Times here in London is reporting that JOEY CAREW was to lose his position and that Viv had his critics (players among them) making his position under threat. Seems they got the wrong emphasis there. It seems to me that if all the reports about Viv's behaviour to the players was correct, he should go with or without conflicts of interest regarding the BBC. As it happens I wish all broadcasters could spare us Viv's broadcasting. Communication is clearly not Viv's strength. However it still feels to me that there isn't any clear criteria for judging whether or not selectors do their job properly and for effective action to be taken. Why were the other two retained for example? What was the competion against Butts? Were there any other candidates? What was the criteria for HIS selection. How will his performance be measured? I sincerely hope that this overall review of our structures still in progress brings better outcomes for our cricket and does so pretty quickly. I guess we will now wait for Viv to tell us all what happened from his point of view and to start open warfare. Maybe I'll listen to his commentary after all.

Dekkah Jun 20, 2004, 5:04:56 AM

Well it aint interim for Joey....If it is one thing this man knows how to do is stay around when everybody else walks right into WICB mine fields. No CZAR/COACH coming! It can't be super imposed on the culture that is present. Come WC2007 these interim selectors will still be here.

XDFIX Jun 20, 2004, 5:10:09 AM

If yuh wanna attribute Vivs sacking to the Yardies den I doubt yuh will get too many rebuttals. However, if yuh think most people are against Viv for the Marlon issue then yuh very limited. Afterall, why would the board agree with the Yardies in that respect????

Chrissy Jun 20, 2004, 5:29:57 AM

Rastaman, could the Board have allowed Viv to do commentary for the BBC and keep the post? I am in no position to comment on other reasons, but who created this conflict of interest other than Viv?

Wally-1 Jun 20, 2004, 5:32:34 AM

yep....gordon's case was more of a conflict....pack it up.

crapaud Jun 20, 2004, 5:34:28 AM

In reply to Christine: Is this the first time he has done commentary while being a selector? If it is, it just confirms how disdainful Viv had become of any sort of proper protocols. It does seem an odd thing for him to have chosen to do. I have heard him doing commentary before but I presume that was before he was a selector.

londoner Jun 20, 2004, 5:35:38 AM

THE WHOLE LOT SHOULD HAVE GONE, AND REPLACE WITH NEW BLOOD .WHAT IN GODS NAME IS JOEY CAREW DOING THERE STILL.? THIS GUY IS PART OF THE PROBLEM.JUST NOW I HEARD THAT CAPTAIN AND ONE SELECTOR WILL PICK THE FINAL 11 FOR ENGLAND AND SO IT SHOULD BE JUST LIKE IN AUSSIE LAND. WE NEVER ABLE TO COMPETE ANTILTHESE GUYS GO. I SAY BEFORE GREAT CRICKETERS DONT MAKE MANGERS THEN PELE WOULD HAVE MANAGE BRAZIL AND BRADMAN WOULD OF MANAGE TOO.

I know it hot, but hush!!!!!!! 1) Where is the report that says Viv was going to the BBC??? 2) How come we only hear about him going to the BBC after he was booted?? (Was ait a contingency plan). 3) Wasn't Greenidge allowed to work ( as consultant) with Bangladesh cricket team while he was still a selector??? Don't yuh think Greenidge's case poses a bigger conflict????

Chrissy Jun 20, 2004, 5:43:55 AM

Pick one, or 2 or 3!!!!!!!!!

Directly from WICB: http://www.windiescricket.com/Article.asp?id=209631 20 June 2004 08:30 Michael "Joey" Carew - Senior Selection Committee Chairman WICB APPOINTS INTERIM SELECTION COMMITTEES by WICB GEORGETOWN, Guyana - The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has appointed interim selection committees for the next two months pending the imminent conclusion of the review of the management structure of the West Indies team. The review of the management structure, which was accepted in principle by the WICB directors at their meeting in Georgetown, Guyana on June 18-19, will have an impact on the role of selectors. In that context, with the work of the committee expected to be completed in two weeks time, the Board decided to appoint interim selection committees. The recommendations of the review are expected to be implemented following the ICC Champions Trophy event in England, which ends in September. The interim Senior Selection Committee is: chairman, Michael "Joey" Carew; Gordon Greenidge and Clyde Butts who is also chairman of the interim Junior Selection Committee which is completed by Ezra Moseley and Derek Parry. Former chairman of selectors, Sir Vivian Richards wrote to the Board informing it that he had committed himself "to doing commentary with the British Broadcasting Corporation during the current West Indies tour to England." On that basis he was unavailable to continue his role on the selection committee.

In reply to Christine:

Wait, what you're doing on this thread if yuh haven't read the CC report.
come on chrissy your comprehension skills should be better than this..
1) Where is the report that says Viv was going to the BBC??? 2) How come we only hear about him going to the BBC after he was booted?? (Was ait a contingency plan).
that is what rasta said ....understand it now?...pack it up.

Rastaman Jun 20, 2004, 5:58:55 AM

Wally, she got whacked cross her headside with this news boss, suh we can see with her!!!!!!!!!!!!

Larr Pullo Jun 20, 2004, 5:59:07 AM

SO the WICB wants to spin it that Viv "left" However, we all know that he was "pushed" Ramnarine started the ball rolliing with his broadside through Cozier. Bottom line is Lara wins again!!!!! He is proving to be quite a winner everywhere but where it matters most - ON THE FIELD!!!

crapaud Jun 20, 2004, 6:01:37 AM

In reply to larr: Hopefully winning on the field will come soon. I hope (optimistically perhaps) that all this quarelling in the backroom is causing too much havoc. It almost feels that we should just take a gamble and have a whole new set of personnel running the show. Try some able DOTTIES.

Did Lara get this job for him or is Viv doing exactly what he did in 2000? Is this a conflict of interest and is this not the reason the Board has stated that he is unavailable to continue his role on the seelction committee? Did not Larr and others say that Greenidge should have been removed from the panel for coaching Bangladesh prior to the World Cup? I am waiting for allyuh to tell me if Lara arranged this job for Viv.

Larr Pullo Jun 20, 2004, 6:06:11 AM

In reply to crapaud: How is it going to come? You think they dont see the duplicity and the backstabbing? You think any of them really feel comfortable working for the WICB?

jacksprat Jun 20, 2004, 6:06:43 AM

In reply to Dukes: Massa Day Done! The fact that we have made a mess of our situation since the exit of Massa does not, by itself, make a cogent case for Massa remaining ensconced, undisturbed in his position. There is no guarantee that things would have been better with Massa in place. That said, many of us are not nostalgic for the days of Massa because we would rather be poor and FREE than be a well fed mendicant. Back to the present matter: Hooper was a failure, as was Richards, and the fact that things have not improved is not a persuasive argument for keeping a selfish, clueless unimaginative Captain like Hooper in place. Hooper's most refined skill as a Captain was that of shirking responsibility. We were losing with him; we can continue to lose without him as well. I say Good Riddance! to Hooper too ! He deserves the same respect he showed his subordinates, particularly Jeremy & Ramnarine. I guess some medicines aren't quite as palatable when you are the one imbibing them.

In reply to larr: You have made some very good observations here. It may be that there are too many vested interests and really not enough passion and honesty for the main thing which is to get a WI team on the pitch winning again and getting back to the top of world cricket.

No doubt...he must have gotten the message from that Cozier article. Its funny that CHristine is trying to spin this like Viv decided to leave. A man like him would always have options but its clear he only accepted the BBC offer after seeing the signs that he was going to be kicked out. Its like being fired by a company and then they issue a statement that you "resigned to pursue other interests."

In reply to crapaud: When Lloyd and them were at the top pf the world it was IN SPITE of the WICB. The players knew they had a captain who would "die" for them and likewise they would die for Lloyd. As a result they formed a potent fighting unit and conquered all and sundry. WE DONT HAVE THAT NOW!!!!

Or him seh...had enuff, take care... Whatever way you look at it, there was a movement to oust him. He did not side with Greenidge & Joey on the decision to remove Hooper. So Lara was Greenidge/Joey's man. Chances are, you will side with your man on conflicting issues. Who would Greenidge/Joey side with when Lara went public with his attacks on selection decisions? Who is WIPA backing? So, who was left on Viv's side? Seems to me this was a meticulous plot!

Do I take it then that everybody is happy that Carew is now Chairman of Selectors?
Why your question gone basically ignored? Cause with Joey in charge...who really will be running the show? What will it take you to believe this? When you see Dillon, Ganga & Powell gracing the colours?

kami Jun 20, 2004, 6:21:55 AM

In reply to CommonCents: I guess its because of the euphoria surrounding Viv's removal and the firm belief that in a few months time selectors as we know them will be a thing of the past. Well all will be revealed soon.

msl Jun 20, 2004, 6:28:12 AM

Biggie & Chrissy !! I told you this would happen since that debacle with the World Cup & Marlon Samuels and his continuing leaks to pharts like Biggie !! Not surprised, former great with no interpersonal skills and very vindictive. GOOD RIDDANCE

crapaud Jun 20, 2004, 6:30:39 AM

In reply to larr: Are we doomed?? I feel like some concrete workable proposals should be put forward by authoritative people without an axe to grind. A bit like the alternative peace process put forward for the middle east. Maybe CC.com can join with the players association to do this. But that is idealistic I guess. I just don't know how we can fix this. We just seem to have a bunch of dummies running the show at all levels with inadequate processes to hold them to account. We make all sorts of mistakes, among them the continuing error that people who are excellent cricketers automatically are excellent captains, selectors administrators etc. Egos have taken over all aspects of our cricket.

Star Jun 20, 2004, 6:32:08 AM

 you all do not understand what went on here. Before the England/WI series started in the caribbean earlier this year, I predicted that leaving Dillon out of the test matches (since he was being left out for the wrong reason) will come back to haunt the selectors and the West Indies cricket team big time. I based my prediction on the inside scoop from certain local characters who hang around the grounds and who were openly saying that pitches will be favourable to the fast bowler with some. Hence Dillon. This was conveyed to all the selectors. Viv however allowed his personal emotions to overcome his professional judgement and indicated to Dillon that no matter what happens, he will never play test cricket for the WI again as long as he (Viv) is chief selector (we all know the reason for this statement from Viv, no need to get into that here) The matter was reported to Rams and added to the earlier feuds between Viv and the other selectors re Hooper, Viv and Wes Hall re Samuels, Viv and Lara re Dillon, the writing was on the wall for Viv. Now fast forward to the test matches and to the events taking place right now and see the results. The locals were right and I was right but I am unhappy with my rightness. Using rightness as a noun is annoying, isn't it?

Dekkah Jun 20, 2004, 6:45:37 AM

In reply to kami: I cyah believe how gullible these ppl are about the CZAR coming. Maybe they just too happy about VIv leaving to sit down and think clealry. Some others too busy spinning the reason Viv is no more too. But what they don't understand is that Viv tried to be the Czar and look how well it fit...It was like Logie was his assistant coach ...he wanted his captain to follow his instructions when he gave them....he picked who he felt had potential and was working hard and would fit his team ...and he ignored WICB directors and national boards as much as possible when he thought they were interferring with his job. Tell me if that does not sound like the modern big head coach of US sports teams? Look closely ppl this is the job description of Czar/coach Banks recommends. Nobody liked it, least of all Brian Lara and the players. Look where it landed Richards. Carew knows his place he gets in return longevity and promotion for it. For all who really matter tings are back to how they should be in West Indies cricket....all those banking (no pun intended) on the CZAR, go back to sleep b/c you only dreaming.

crapaud Jun 20, 2004, 6:52:58 AM

In reply to Dekkah: It seems to me the structure is one issue. CZAR or no czar or whatever. There is also the issue of whether Viv's behaviour had rendered his position as untenable which is what is resignation/removal is addressing.

imusic Jun 20, 2004, 6:59:27 AM

Does this mean that Dave Mohammed might actually get to play a Test match again?

Dekkah Jun 20, 2004, 7:05:01 AM

In reply to crapaud: Crapaud Vivi's dismissal makes sure that WICB stays the way it has been for decades and the way those who benefit the most from the status quo want it to remain. So if you think petitions and whatever you have in mind will bring change you better go back to sleep like those dreamers who believe the CZar coming in three months.

crapaud Jun 20, 2004, 7:09:14 AM

In reply to Dekkah: We mustn't give up hope. If you don't try then things will DEFINITELY stay the same.

Dekkah Jun 20, 2004, 7:12:44 AM

Well that is an individual perogative...giving up as you put it or accepting reality as I think of it....it is just a matter of when with West Indies cricket.

sensie Jun 20, 2004, 7:19:22 AM

Alyuh muss read and understand: The dramatic removal of the selection committee chairman follows a week of intense lobbying by the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA), aided by captain Brian Lara, for Richards to be replaced.

np Jun 20, 2004, 7:23:14 AM

In reply to Christine:

Is Viv doing BBC commentary or not? Well he was on the BBC commentator's team for the BBC in 2000 so it seems perfectly logical. Can a selector do this? No he can't. So there is a clear conflict of interest. Why does it have to be anything else? Truly sad - Viv made the wrong decision here.
Is Viv broke - and needy for some BBC cash??? Is WICB not paying him well enough?? Viv's decision is a big surprise to me!!! But truly - how much of this may be a decision borne out of frustration on his part with the team's progress and/or his failure, as selection chair, to put the best teams together??? Many questions surround this uncharacterisitc move - which i sm sure COMES as a surprise to MOST of us here!!! Still bafffled!!! - neva coulda thunk it!!!

JOJO Jun 20, 2004, 7:28:24 AM

In reply to np: What is even more baffling is the fact that Greenidge - who COACHED an opponent who was playing in the same group as WI - was retained as a selector during that time. I think this is another case of WICB not being straightforward with the reasons for its actions.

Benjie Jun 20, 2004, 7:42:51 AM

Viv should have done the honorable thing and resign. If he is as he says committed to WI cricket I expect to see him involved in Antigua and Leewards cricket and in cricket development of the youth across the region. Somehow I fee he is going to want to join the TV circuit. Someone is giving him ram goat advice and making him feel that he sounds good on TV. Heroes are supposed to retire, tend their garden and offer advice ( like Sir Garry). They should not lobby for and accept jobs that expose them to public ridicule. Viv is now paying the ultimate price for accepting the job as chairman of selectors. If he wants to preserve whats left of his legacy he needs to stay far away from a microphone.

Chrissy Jun 20, 2004, 7:43:14 AM

JoJo, a different administration was in place when Greenidge was coaching Bangladesh. How can the Chairman of WI Selection Panel be a commentator on the enemies' state run radio station. That is a very obvious conflict of interest and the Board would have been traced to the ground if they allowed it. NP, you may have a point there since Viv must have known that the Board would not sanction that BBC work. Still with the Caribbean World CUp looming, some lucrative contracts will be available to past players. By the way Benjie, Viv's legacy as a batsman and captain is very, very safe.

Rastaman Jun 20, 2004, 7:57:48 AM

In reply to Christine:

JoJo, a different administration was in place when Greenidge was coaching Bangladesh.
Hey, Chrissy, why yuh so naive??? Greenidge was working with the Bangladesh team as a consultant while he was still on the selection panel!!!!!!Why yuh fraid fi see that it debunks yuh silly excuse???

Scar Jun 20, 2004, 9:07:15 AM

np. Selectors dont get paid, isnt it a 'voluntary'post? If Viv was asked to leave for conflict reasons well fine!! If he was asked to leave because all of sudden the WICB get to be all powerful with lobbyists- which I doubt- that is stupid !! Ramarine per someones post here has a revenge agenda apparently and it aint against TnT personnel it seems for Carew to still be there shows how strong the old boys network is !! Lets see if more questionable selections of players Joey likes will be made. Will Dillon a mecca of fast bowling mediocrity for 10 years be recalled, will banks a Joey non like be dropped soon, will Jan replace Devon another who was dissed in the Joey/Findley days? We shall see !! Vivs playing legacy is and will remain intact Chrissy we know. It is now left to be seen which of the players chosen under his lead will deliver from here on and vindicate him!! I have a felling he may well have the last laugh !!!

Theo Jun 20, 2004, 10:42:42 AM

I cannot say I am sorry to see him go. He has always reminded me of someone who is good with their hands but has no brains.

cubbyw Jun 20, 2004, 12:06:15 PM

The WICB continues to treat the ailment and not the cause of the problem. BC Lara has brought lots of success to West Indies cricket as an individual , but in the process he has brought a lot of disharmony. To me his retention as captain of the team will not elevate us off the floor of International cricket. We will rise again when his negative influence is gone for good. Viv was just another sacrifice to keep the cry baby prince happy.

West Indies must move on, and the name Viv Richards will still earn him $$$$. Joey Carew can't make a $ without selectors allowance, the clique (DeSouza, Ellis Lewis, Jackie Hendriks, Lennox John) made sure Joey still has an income. Don't hold your breaths, full elections for selectors in September. Leewards will still be pushing VIV. The only thing this interim panel will do is meet to select 14 for Champion's Trophy, tell Joey that's only $200 he will make in all that time!

weary1969 Jun 20, 2004, 4:31:13 PM

Joey Carew is broken so he needs the WICB selection job to get a small change. The persons on this MB get more rediculous by the hour. No logical reason just RUBBISH, GARBAGE AND NONSENSICAL ARGUMENTS once u do not like a person. Keep it up Tommy joseph job is at risk, I get more laughs on this MB that Tommy Joseph in concert

Not you out of the Selection process.. They will regret. What Ramnarine should have been doing was trying to play the game and stop being these pu ssies back up and cover boy.. Thank you VIV..

In reply to Christine:Why you think So? WRONG? Hell no.. Being a selector is a thankless JOB.. Why not go get $$$$ to be a Commentator. VIV I am with you on this.. F them

carib Jun 20, 2004, 4:52:51 PM

In reply to Chally1: Well, its pretty clear to me that Viv was forced out, and I doubt he will be back. Too bad. I beleive that his attempts at discipline were resented by the players, and thats why he was forced out. I dont think Lara had anything directly to do with it, but I doubt he'll be unhappy either. Dekkah is 100 percent right on the idea of getting rid of the selection panel. This is NOT a step to the czar coach. Viv was trying to move things in that directioon, but such movement has stopped. The problem of team discipline still remains, with the proviso that now NO ONE will be pushing it.( Look what happens to those who actually try to do something about it) :(

msl Jun 20, 2004, 7:12:39 PM

Yadi, Digifly was not as well informed as Biggie who was spouting a lot of venom directly from Viv's mouth. Digifly is a compendium of sources. I warned last year that it was unprofessional for a selector to be divulging (leaking) this kind of info for Biggie to broadcast on CC.com outside of the established channels. Viv has now been fired for the 3rd time and hopefully the last. Captain, coach, selector

vivek_shankar153 Jun 20, 2004, 9:57:16 PM

Anyway Viv is interested in doing commentary. Shows his commitment to West Indies cricket ? whether he was sacked or he resigned on his own is not the thing ? but good he's booted out. It's ok for him to play golf when important matches are going on in the first class scene. Then his commitment is never questioned. whereas the commitment of a captain wanting a specialist spinner in the team is ? what double standards of the HATERS ? Get Lost Viv.

WIfulife Jun 21, 2004, 4:57:43 AM

Viv is gone soon time Logie might go.....me wanda wa WICB will do next...maybe ask Lara who he want fu selecta and coach.

Prophet Jun 21, 2004, 8:47:39 AM

To jala: That sort of behavior is not discipline but the opposite. In fact Lara is much more disciplined than Viv ever was. If reports are true about the behavior of Viv off the field...his exotic adventures with his buddy Ian Botham (he has created a whole UN of offspring in the process!!!),...his partiality towars the 'herb' (thank God that no drug testing was done in those days!!!) etc. Lara was inexperienced and therefore acted inappropriately when things began to fall apart, but let us not fool ourselves by even thinking that he was the problem, or even part of it!Time has proven again and again that his instincts were right. Richards on the other hand has always been a bully, and an indesciplined one to boot.

lalaboy Jun 21, 2004, 8:48:03 AM

I will shed no tears for Viv I said it before, fundamental error. A good employee or player does not necessarily make a good manager/ selector. Give Viv his due (Great player). Terrible terrible selector. Glad to see him go. On to the next it is time WICBC hire specialist coaches. As per Ravi a bowling coach/batting coach/ trainer for fitness etc. WICBC get in the modern times and start spending the money required otherwise WI will continue downhill. Implement better school programs, better tournaments and don't forget to start injecting new blood in a timely fashion..

rikiniki Jun 21, 2004, 8:53:20 AM

In reply to lalaboy: EXACTLY.......all de changing of selectors, coaches, captains etc. did not work, and will not change a ting. as far as i am concerned, that is just skimming de top. at de end of de day, is de quality of players dat counts. in the past years when we were at the top, the system was no better than now.

rohu Jun 21, 2004, 12:06:35 PM

Viv Richards's ways of intimidating and bullying are not acceptable despite all his performances on the cricket field.Too much bias and a bit of senility seems to have crept into him.If he is indeed still for the 4 pronged pace attack,he is insane. The days when the westindies had genuine fast bowlers is now history and i feel they definitely need to play spinners, atleast one for god's sake. His being booted is a boon for westindies and less of a pain in the arse for Brian Lara.

Roots1 Jun 22, 2004, 5:25:44 AM

It is quite worring to read about the continuing problems between the management and the westindies team. Trouble is you get the feeling that Viv's leaving will not bring to an end this sorry saga that has plagued the westindies for many years. If it is true that Viv's behaviour was threatening and intimidating then he is wrong and should go. However, you do feel that sometimes the Team needs a firm telling off for some of the rotten performances over recent years. The thing is, I rather suspect that Lara and Viv are similar personalities, with very poor man management skills. :!:

Cliff Jun 22, 2004, 6:17:17 AM

Good riddance, this is the man who refused to play the third fastest bowler in the last World Cup until the Windies were out of contention and then had the gall to say on Barbadian radio that he had no regrets and would do the same all over again. He also dropped fast bowler Powell for Sandford after Powell's only Test against New Zealand I think where he took two wickets. Has Viv ever held any post in Leewards or Antiguan cricket, ask yourself why?

jala Jun 22, 2004, 6:39:44 AM

In reply to jacksprat: you are one crazy dude! selfishness in not synonymous with Carl Hooper, rather with Brianna LARA. he cuss out Dennis waite, logie, richardson, richards, chanders, kenneth benjamin, he deliberately drop walsh catches in pakistan jus' fuh get de captaincy, criticise adams, back bite hooper, who was causing the team to develor some amount of backbone and the players actually like and responded to him. now lara get richards booted. this man is a weapon of mass distruction. the only thing could move he is president bush. by the way leh we compare de captains records Brian Lara- 36 played , 10 won, 19 losses, 6 draws Carl Hooper- 22 played, 4 wins , 7 defeats, 11 draws Now u tell me, whos record is better? Hooper only lost 7 of 22 matches (31%) ) while lara has lost 19 of 36 (53%). Mathematics is such a wonderful thing eh!

In reply to jala: I am not sure I got your point. I said Hooper was selfish so you gave me a comparision of Hooper captaincy records vis a vis Lara's to prove.......what exactly? Hooper was not dropped but abandoned the team, at the eleventh hour when he was not named captain. Check how many times he carried out this nonsense. How about the Hong Kong Sixes tournament when he was named captain and had a dispute with the sponsors? How about the World Cups he has missed when he declared himself unavailable on the eve of the tournaments ? How many other times has he "retired" in a huff when he did not get his way? If your defence of Hooper is to 'prove' that someone else was 'worse' does not in anyway make the case that he is not guilty of what he was charged. WHEEL & COME AGAIN !

In reply to Chally1: It's obvious Viv jumped ship because he heard about the impending shake up in the structure. By the way when Viv is commentating I switch the channel. I would really like to know what makes Viv a sought after commentator by the BBC he is an embarassment to the WI. This is the same Viv who refused to go to S.Africa because of his love for WI cricket and now according to him he wants money from the WICB when all of his predessors worked under the same coditions. Viv right to play wunnah  !
