HEADLINE: Richie Richardson: Calm Ruthlessness

(The Sticky Wicket West Indies Hall of Fame in Antigua launches its voting process to select two more persons to join the select group of legends to be named among "Cricket's Finest". Voting ends November 30, 2006).

Richie Richardson is among the list of nominees this year and it must be said they don't come much better than Richie. He was a cavalier batsman in true West Indian style on the field. Off the park, he had a calm, reassuring presence. He entered the West Indies team in the early 1980s as a student of his mentor Sir Viv Richards, and he never looked back. Full Story

44.39 test batting average is good but not special. That makes him just one of countless good but unremarkable batsmen who averaged less than 45.

He never did a double or triple. Whether that was because he did not have the ability or the character to do it is something that can be debated.

I opt for lack of character, judging by the manner in which he got the WI captaincy - for being someome's lap dog and having the potential to be a docile "board bwoy" puppet of the then WICBanditsCriminals. Being used to lap dog status and not being used to standing up to anyone or for anything, he could not stand up to bowlers for as long as it takes to make doubles and/or triples.

In the end, he is known and remembered for having surrendered WI dominance of world cricket to Australia, and upon doing so, deemed it to be "just a game of cricket".

And he was just a fairly good cricketer, nothing more.

Man carry you skunt with your shyte.

Disagree if you want, no problem, but don't try to tell me what to think or say, yuh hear. You damn farse and out of place to attempt that.

If you think that 44 average is great, fix up....is what you think, not what is. My standards significantly higher than that.

And as for the rest of it, it's all history, and I did not make it so, he did. If you have a problem with it, talk to him, not me. Maybe he can change history....I can't.

I call it as I, and a lot of other people, see it. And if you take off your blinkers and rose coloured glasses, you could see it too.
