World Cup 2007 organisers today announced that Shaggy, Rupee and Faye-Ann will collaborate on the official song for the tournament. The song is titled "The Game of Love and Unity" and is described as "a lively, up-tempo fusion of dance, soca and reggae."

It is meant to vividly capture the vibrancy, vitality, passion and fun-loving spirit of all Caribbean people for life and the game of cricket.

It have a number of other artistes who a bit more high profile dan Faye Ann.

Destra, Alison Hinds, Machel, Bunji, come immediately to mind.

Let me ask some questions , regarding the choice of these persons .
1. Was there a Competition for the Official Song .

2.Was it open to all artists in the Region .

I ask these questions because , In my opinion the two main forms of popular local music in the Region are Reggae & Calypso .

I have to confess I have no idea who Fay Ann is , and what genre is her forte , so I would like to be enlightened .

Another surprise is Shaggy? Must be for international appeal, and they didnt want Beenie cause of his anti-gay stance.

Fayann is a Female Soca Artiste from Trinidad. Although not as popular internationally as Destra, she is still one of the top female artistes in Trini. Last year she had a hit called; "That is carnival".

In mid-May 2006, ICC Cricket World Cup West Indies 2007 Inc. began advertising for persons and/or companies in the recording industry to compose, produce and record the official song of next year’s tournament – something that would reflect the Caribbean’s vibrancy and passionate, fun-loving lifestyle and, of course, its love affair with cricket.

A Request for Proposal (RFP) was therefore extended to recording companies, consortia and producers worldwide with the stipulation that their submissions not only promote the region and awareness of the most prestigious international cricket tournament but also include “Caribbean talent…and promote Caribbean artistes and music”.

“While anyone in the music industry can respond to the RFP, we definitely want Caribbean input and the only people who can truly reflect the spirit, music and culture of the Caribbean must have Caribbean roots.

“Persons with a lot of experience in the music industry are likely to contend for this honour but new and emerging Caribbean artistes also stand a good chance. This would be a great prospect for someone relatively new – or even unheard of – to come to the fore.” ICC CWC 2007 Marketing Manager, Damon Leon, had said when the RFP was launched.

Ultimately, the choice of the ICC CWC 2007 Official Song was made after reviewing a number of proposals. One submission from a prominent Caribbean artiste stood out from the others, with this performer sharing his vision of a regionally collaborative song which was musically and lyrically Caribbean, relevant to the tournament and which could leave a legacy beyond the event. Two other recognised artistes with their own unique distinctive styles joined in the collaboration and added to the Caribbean diversity of the song in what will become the tournament’s signature theme song.

Titled ‘The Game of Love and Unity’, the official tournament song is a lively, up-tempo fusion of dance, soca and reggae and vividly captures the vibrancy, vitality, passion and fun-loving spirit of all Caribbean people for life and the game we love - cricket.

The objectives to be achieved by the official song were identified as follows:

* To create a positive, memorable song
* To create a song that will elevate the awareness, popularity and hype of the Event
* To create a song that will have Caribbean and global appeal
* To create a song which is pan Caribbean and inclusive of Caribbean talent.
* To create a song which can be used as a promotional driver for sponsors, broadcasters and other stakeholders

Thanks for the information , I however would have opted for The Mighty Sparrow , Baron , Chalkdust etc. All renowned kaiso men in the Region , rather than Rupee . Allison Hinds , Singing Francine , even Princess Monique , who I am sure is better than Fay Ann .
Now I am talking about authentic Kaiso people , not the jump up and wave thing that is called soca . Which in essence is 3 lines repeated 50 times as is called music . IF A TUNE AINT HAVE PLENY LYRICS IT CANNOT QUALIFY AS KAISO .

I have never heard Shaggy tunes , but I suppose that he is the guy representing Reggae music in the trio .

I still believe that a better trio could have been assembled . BTW ,VOR , What criteria was used in the selection of these persons , I suppose like every thing the Pirates do that is top secret .

I totally agree with you there . Rudder is a genius . His name didnt come to my mind when I was naming persons .

As far as I am aware he composes and sings his kaisos . Sparrow it is my understanding doesnt write his material anymore . Not that I believe that should disqualify anyone . Thanks for suggesting Rudder , Arrow would have been good also .

The words not too bad at all - just about right for a sports event. And Shaggy - sort of clownish and harmless and youngish but not intimidating or difficult to 'get' - and a criss gal is perfect for what is supposed to be a fun and light hearted affair.

Haven't heard the song, but the lyrics and artiste choices get an A from me.

I can grow to like it. Nice and catchy beat but I'm not a fan of Rupee's voice/pitch. Shaggy's portion carries the tune, IMO.

Rupee has and will always be an okay performer...........nothing great or genius about him

I know it wasnt a straight off selection process but more had to do with the responses and analysis of the RFP's

However, for any male Soca imput, Rudder and Machel's imput would be lightyears ahead of Rupee on any given day
