West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels scored a sizzling unbeaten 99-ball century against Pakistan in the fourth One Day International in Multan. Samuels said that he considers it a special knock especially since he stayed to the end of the innings and ensured that the Windies were home safely in overhauling the Pakistani total of 209.
Following are comments from Samuels on the evening after the game and just before the team departed Multan for Karachi where the final ODI will be played on Saturday:

HEADLINE: Samuels: This Knock Was Special
Damning indictment of the powers that be!!!
He definitely sounds frustrated with the "opportunities" down the order
In reply to Surya
He needs to be more self critical and recognise his past errors as a building block in future gains.
In reply to CaribbeanCricket.com
So its all about batting position now?
What he fails to mention is that he fails at any and every position in his career as his career avg indicates. What he is implying is that he can't handle the pressure of batting lower down the order. Shiv does it, Ramdin does it, Bravo does it and they all have better averages than him.
In reply to Surya
Given the type of batsman Samuels is, a continued stint at the number 4 position would always ensure some innings like this. The task for him is to make meaningful contributions even when he is not playing this well and not give his wicket away in soft dismissals. But the problem is pure numbers would tend to speak against Samuels and in favor of Bravo or Morton for the number 4 position (for Sarwan would definitely be a fixture at number 3 in one-dayers,and assuming that Lara would bat at 5 or later as is his recent preference) and hence it is doubtful how long he will be able to hold on to that position. But if in the next few matches to be played before the WC he can produce one more innings like this on top of some otherwise consistent (if not spectacular) performance, it is not inconceivable that Samuels would bat at 4, Bravo further down the order and Morton may have to sit out.
By the way, has the Shiv-Gayle opening partnership been finalized for the WC? A (not rhetorical) question to the statisticians, what is the relative percentage of matches won by WI where Shiv-Gayle opened? It feels like that number would be considerably high for WI in recent years. I could be wrong though.
Steups, who de fugg dat skunt tink he is calling on people to bat him high in de order.
Let dat talentless skunt learn dat yuh cyah get top ah de order batting unless yuh fugging earn it. Failing to pass 20 for de better part ah de year is not de way.
And scoring ah fugging hundred against ah 3rd string attack doh make yuh skunt great. Yuh is still ah rank shitpit in my book until yuh arrogant skunt could prove meh wrong. Jes anopther Flooper on de side. Scoring runs when on de brink ah getting drop. Dat skunt shuldnt even be playing.
Disrefuggingards.
In reply to rikiniki
If every Tom,Dick and Harry Trini can fugging get chances to bat up the order, Samuels has every reason to be frustrated
In reply to Surya
Frustrated my arse. When yuh skunt failing all year yuh wha waltz on ah team and get chance to bat high in de order.
Look before dis year Sars was de man in ODI's. Gayle and Chanders opening since de DLF cup, Lara at he usual no.4, Bravo is sort of ah permanent fixture on de team. And he show against India dat he too need to bat early, as he is not ah fast starter or ah lower order slogger. Who de skunt is Sammy? Ah bet yuh dat skunt eh make ah 50 for de nex 10-15 matches. 8)
In reply to thefan Why would u even bring up ramdin and Bravo batting in the same context with sammy , I dont know if Ramdin ever make a hundred at this level I know Bravo has, but tell me have you heard anyone put Bravo or Ramdins batting in the same context as Samuels?
People are still marveling at Sammys ODI ton against India after what 5 years? and the superlatives are flowing on this latest one.
A BMW and a Honda will both take u where you want to go, but you dont think there is a difference in the cars?

Look, that is exactly the skuntery that's killing WI cricket. One looks good but can't even get 50 in 28 innings but he's suddenly better than players who bat at the same positions and avg higher than him. Shamwells is a rank shithound. Praise the Lord if he comes good and delivers consistently. If he doesn't, tell me something new.
In reply to thefan
Delivering consistently would be a phenomena in modern day in WI cricket, then again it all depends on the definition of delivers consistently, you dont bitch and moan about Ganga, but then again maybe to you he delivers consistently even though the last I check Ganga and Sammys averages were similar.
In reply to birdseye
Just so you know, riki is an ex-LBL
In reply to thefan ... on that note ... can we see such an analysis for which your good at ... on his performnce by positions?
Now I know that this ungrateful son of a oneplyasswipe is way out in left field.
In other word he like he blaming Lara for batting him that low in the order. This oneplyasswipe should be glad they toil wid his ass in the WI team with that shyte average.
In reply to birdseye
Ganga is a shithound. This yr, Ganga has delivered the highest test avg of any WI batsman. What has Shamwells done this yr that compares? Ganga outperforms Shamwells because he is way behind Shamwells in terms of technical skills and range of strokeplay. He is mentally tougher than Shamwells.
In reply to Flickcan ... carefull ... did you hear the tone of the interview ... a sure you granny told you ... is not what you say is how you say it.
In reply to thefan ... in ODIs he has not.
In reply to natty_forever
Shamwells wants to bat higher.
This is his career avg:
Opening - 10.00
No. 3 - 28.33
No. 4 - 39.70
No. 5 - 38.86
No. 6 - 21.75
His avg at No. 4 and No. 5 are not much different. However, when he gets the ultimate high batting positions of opener or No. 3, his avg is pisspoor. From No. 6 down his avg drops dramatically. He's played his most innings at No. 6 (23 innings) and his 2nd most at No. 3 (15 innings). Those 2 positions are 2 of the most pressure filled positions.
My estimation is simple: Shamwells CANNOT HANDLE PRESSURE whether it is at the top of the order facing the new ball quicks or at the bottom when the team needs to win or to score quickly.
These same mudderskunts wha drop Ganga after leading de windies in tests this year. According to flickcan, dat skunt shouldnt even be on de fuggin team based on ALL THOSE FUGGING FAILURES THIS YEAR.
De story eh done tho, watch de proceedings when he meet real bowlers. 8)
In reply to thefan ... does show tho that he bats better at 4 ... don't? Handle pressure quite well today ... handled it at the beginning and the end. :D
In reply to subaltern
You got it right ... he is not a voooooper,
He needs to know that he has time to go through
all the phases that he must ... in order to evole
to that resonant stage ... where he is just into
his own zone.
In reply to rikiniki ... believe me ... even when Ganga face real bowlers me nah call for him to get dropped. :D
In reply to natty_forever
Good for you
In reply to thefan And even with the stunning year Ganga is having, Samuels still have a higher average in both forms of the game than him, something just dosent add up, explain.
In reply to Yadi
Get a grip, its ODI cricket. He has test cricket to EVOLVE. Has he evolved in test cricket?
There is no flipping reason for senior performing batsmen should give up their preferred positions to accomodate this skunt. Shiv started at the bottom of the order than proved himself, which allows him to bat higher if he wants. Bravo has done the same.
In reply to rikiniki .. you know I am one who has never asked for Ganga to be dropped from the Test 11.
In reply to thefan Correction: Bravo IS doing the same.
In reply to natty_forever
He drop enough batsman while fielding so he will eventually drop himself, he always does.

Rikki is Birdseye sey suh ... not me.
In reply to thefan Ramdin has done it a FEW times. He has never done it consistently, PLEASEEE!!!!!!
Just watched the highlights.... great innings by Di Elegant one but I place his ton against India in 2002 as his best todate.
Can't pass by without mentioning that glorious SIX by the DiBoss... even he enjoyed it !! And what about that last FOUR... Whooooooooo.... Breathless !!
Seems like Samuels has made a lot of people unhappy today.
In reply to natty_forever
what is your problem, i call your name or somethng?
Dem don't call him Swaggas fe nothing. For a man who fail so much, him mouth sweet nuh rass. Elegance ina dem skunt....... Oval 291, why him never give yuh ah shout ina de interview ? Classy with da bat but class-less when it comes to manners
Aye Elegance
Just STFU and bat on..seen... ![]()
In reply to rikiniki ... wha ' wrong with you ... the muddie rum done?
In reply to natty_forever
I dont drink rum
In reply to rikiniki my apologies. In that case mighty big of you to extend the olive branch to the muddies ... now if you really waan show me sey you are a changed person, show some love for the Yaadies. :D
In reply to Surya
Logie batted late and did yeoman service
In reply to Surya
Who is Harry trini? Bravo? Ganga? Didn't Bravo bat at 3 for Trinidad and made much runs - What's up with that? Let's have the whole team bat at 4 then . . . Don't Collingwoord, peterson, Clarke, and others all bat low from time to time????
In reply to natty_forever
Fugg Yardies. I prefer Nazis 8)
The slavish mentality still persists in many of the posters, as manifested by their ignorant responses. It seems that the preference would be to have Pakistan leading by 3-0 instead of 2-1.
Even when Samuels stuck around at the very end and made a few runs to ensure that the WINDIES won a recent ODI in India it was a problem. In other words, damn if he performs and likewise damn if he does not. The fact of the matter is that he spoke what he considered to be the truth, and obviously this has offended some of you.
Fortunately for Samuels he went to a GREAT school in Jamaica which teaches resilience and promotes an unyielding Spirit that confounds many. I have no doubts whatsover that greater performances are ahead from this gifted young man. To the insular ones amongst us, try and emancipate yourselves from this illness and be thankful that Samuels' made a remarkable century that ensured a win for the WINDIES!

For the World Cup the following places look set:
1.) Gayle
2.) Chanderpaul
3.) Bravo
4.) Samuels
5.) Lara
6.) Sarwan
7.) Ramdin
8.) _ _ _ _
9.) Bradshaw
10.) Taylor
11.) _ _ _ _
12.) Smith {Dwyane}
13.) Collymore
14.) _ _ _ _
As you see I still have three blanks. Smith &
Collymore are an option for 8 & 11 ... but so are
Sammy & Deonerine, therefore, nobody needs to have their
knickers in a knot at this stage. Whatever questions
remain will have to be addressed in the regional
first class competition. This is where somebody needs
to step up with devastating batting or bowling.
All the praise was heaped on Sammy but little was said about the bowling. In the last game, they bowled too short in conditions that favoured swing. Result: belted all over the field.
In this game, on a better batting wicket, they ALL bowled a better length, esp Dwayne Smith who was swinging the ball like a table tennis ball. That is the major reason we won!
In reply to Fortis
Anyway, yuh sense the mood of a few haters here who seem to be going thru such immense pain and sufferung all because Samuels delivered another spectacular knock, reminiscent of his brilliant ODI ton in India in 2002. Yuh can feel their agony in trying to say nice things to express their appreciation of his superb batting display yet struggling to hide their hating.
I too have faith that we will see many more of these "eye-pleasing" knocks from Samuels. The haters can continue to wish doom and gloom on the most attrative right-right-handed batsman in the WI at this juncture of WI cricket. As Super Cat and Heavy D said on their combo hit a few years ago, " Dem nuh worry we."
Given my short time here in the Rum shop...one cannot take the jabs seriously. It would have to be mere inter-regional jabbing and jiving. Surely WE ALL enjoyed Samuels' innings today.
He has to earn his place up the order as our team is ram packed with individuals with tremendous talent and potential...unfortunately too many have more potential than runs!
The highlights were sweet and i keepin the tape of this one for future reference when some of u start cussing bout talent and everages and the lot.
Lookin fwd to Saturday mornings' game. Dont forget it starting a HALF HOUR Later. 2:30 am Bajan time folks.
gine an rub down with some vicks ...latuhs
Simmons will make it to the WC before Sammy or Deonarine.
The 14 or 15 playing plus Bravo and Sarwan is where the 15 will be picked.

A great school, in Jamaica? Yes, but what's the point? - retrospectively speaking, most of the players went to "great schools", even if the public did not think them so. All Caribbean schools should teach their charges to rise up from the ashes as they struggle with their personal demons and skills. Elitism (and elite schools) might also be considered a slavish mentality, borrowed as it is from colonial ideology and structrues. Say yes, then, to the comprehensive ideal -all schools, nations are peoples -the diversity and the mix -in the Caribbean are to be given equal acceptance . . . indeed, excellence and resilience is likely widely distributed.
Marlon's innings was a thing of immense beauty, strokes perfectly timed, as if he, the bat and the ball were as one; but . . . this kind fo performance must come more often before we envision "excellence" and "having risen" A lame duck (which Samuels certainly is not) may rise momentarily, but we know, in our hearts, that he will also soon fall, and then, when he falls and is sprawled on the ground, being the haters that we have elarnt to be, our laughter will rise to be as loud as a church bell on a quiet Sunday morning somewhere in little England or Indesh.

It is always interesting to read views on this board and observe posters sentiments and the slants their arguments take on various isuues, and personalities. One thing that is not hidden is that once you are not liked nothing you say or do will have any effect on some posters here. I willfully read all the responses on this thread before reading the lead post sited article and on reading the responses on this thread one would not have realised that Mr. Samuels (who I think is a joker) also said this
In reply to Nekt
We are all selective in what we perceived and choose to acknowledge, that's just how the brain operates, duh. Didn't you also select your own quote and interpreted its relevance? It is not all that is said, but the overall intent and perceived focus of the message - I think people on the board are good critical thinkers, even when I don't agree with them (often) - bat higher indeed. ![]()
