Georgetown Cricket Club all-rounder Neil Mc Garrell has been surprisingly dropped from Guyana's 14-man squad for the upcoming regional Carib Cup and KFC Cup competitions scheduled to start on January 4.

The 34-year old former West Indies player, who has taken 276 first-class wickets, is one of many other notable omissions from the squad, which will be captained for the first time by Narsingh Deonarine.

Lately making the national team has become too easy

If Jacobs, Johnson and Gaja are good enough they will make the team eventually....but dem have to work hard and deliver consistently in local cricket

Johnson was given a FC game a few years....he wasn't ready....Fuda has been playing in the last two years....he wasn't ready....Jacobs and Gaja et al must be banging on the doors....scoring tons in trial matches consistently......show appetite for big runs etc

In reply to Narper I feel duh boy Gajanand Singh should be in deh team. he scored in the Youth World Cup, he scored in the recent WI Youth Tournament and in trial matches. You have to play youngsters when they are hot and confident. Why they going back to Haniff he ain't got no future his days are gone by. If you see that boy Gajanand Singh bat you would know what I am talking about.

great point denoke. azeemul spends a lot of time in toronto summer leagues so he may have given up a real international career. gaj should have been pushed into team. have u seen gordon?

This Guyana team shows some of the problems with Guyana cricket, and with West Indies cricket by extension.

The core of the team consists of Deonarine, Dowlin, Nagamootoo, (Esaun) Crandon and King. Of these only Crandon and Deonarine have a real future in Guyana cricket, and possibly regional.

Outside of the core the others are unproven newcomers. Guyana fans can only hope that at least some of them will serve Guyana well. Many in recent years have not. Hanif is experienced but he too has to re-establish his worth to the team.

On the other hand, experienced fringe players like Leon Johnson, Gajanand Singh, Thomas and Garraway are not in the team. They apparently did not do well in the Guyana county matches and trials.

What is remarkable is that year after year promising players appear on the scene but they seem unable to command a steady place in the national team. This is obviously not because of a lack of talent. What seems to be missing is a sustained development program for national players.

The Guyana Cricket Board selects the national team twice a year, pays their expenses for regional tournaments and then forgets them in between tournaments. There are no national batting, bowling or professional development clinics and no other national team activities whatsoever.

In other countries they organise National XI v. Rest matches, fundraisers, team guest appearances, community coaching by national players, etc. Reon King, while playing for Northern Province in South Africa, learnt how important community coaching was for local clubs and for the player's self-esteem.

The GCB makes no deliberate attempt to develop national player talent. Every man is on his own when it comes to converting that raw talent into national and regional assets. We see the results in players like Thomas and Garraway today, and probably with Johnson and Singh tomorrow.

Players' talents are nurtured almost entirely by the clubs, for club or local pride. Club players practice together and are coached by their own senior players. There is no equivalent for national players.

No wonder our national and regional players seem to be just decent club cricketers.

In reply to Narper But Singh went home and dominated the last under 19 and made runs in the trials. My question last year was how Steve Jacobs played for the senior team and couldn't make the West Indies Youth team and Singh had just come back from the World Cup(where he was outstanding) and in my opinion was the most talented batsman on the West Indies Youth team. However when yuh got selectors like Huntie wah yuh expect.

I wonder if they are even thinking of development at all. I suspect that before long Gaja will be in the team and when he gets in, he will stay there.

The Guyana Cricket Board has the services of Colin Stuart (Development Officer), Reon King (current national player), Clyde Butts (current WICB selector), Sarwan, Butcher and probably Pydanna.

More than enough cash around for these, though coaching clinics in Guyana are usually gratis.

Why was Chattergoon not included? Is he still injured? McGarrell should have been included instead of Nagamootoo.
