The West Indies cricket team has made it clear that it is wearing Digicel-branded clothing on the upcoming ODI tour of India under heavy protest.

That's because the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is not paying the players a sponsorship split for the four-match series, which begins in Nagpur on January 21.

The players are making a huge mistake in letting the WICB get away with this. They should not play....let the WICB and Digicel sort their mess out. What good is playing under protest? They're still playing aren't they? The WICB still gets what it wants and they don't.

This is idiocy on every front. What complete and utter tripe. WIPA and the players who have agreed to play under protest are playing into the hands of the WICB so it's foolishness all round.

This is no different from any dysfunctional relationship - give the controlling party and inch and they'll take a mile. The players put up with it for a little while longer yet - playing martyrs even - giving hand to the Board, again.

All that is going to do is make the inevitable - and it is inevitable - bust up and carnage all the more explosive, damaging and irreparable.

In reply to Zikdaman How can you say this after Lara himself wnet public begging Gordon to let the tour go through because his friends in India need teh practice?

Did you resign from teh LPA?

In reply to Zikdaman /quote]"I wish to point out that the players have, with much reluctance, agreed to participate in this tour. Much effort was required to persuade them to wear a sponsor’s logo without being the recipient of any benefits from such a sponsor," WIPA president Dinanath Ramnarine said in a letter to the board.

Did Lara speak out of turn whe he told Gordon the tour MUS go on?

This is totally predictable. The WICB is not interested in WI cricket, never was, and never will be. Its main concern is preserving its privilege at the expense of the cricketers. We could lose every match as long as the cricketers remain good little boys, everything "gonna be alright." The WICB is all about control and preserving the status quo. It never was about fairness and producing champion cricketers. When that happened during the glory days it was an accident of circumstances, not at all attributable to the WICB. The WICB MUST GO...... 8) 8) 8)

The players are only going on this tour because of the World Cup. Rest assured by publicly stating that they're playing under protest, they have covered themselves legally. The WC ends on April 28. Watch di ride.

This only reinforces my position that the players should have been allowed to play in that Stanford $5 million game against South Africa.

This much touted World Cup will be a windfall for everyone but the players, and the governments & the people of the Caribbean will be left holding the bag, while the well-positioned few make out like bandits.

The Stanford game did not go on because of the vindictiveness and self-centered shortsightedness of a few influential people in West Indies cricket.

Wish the WIPA had been more assertive in making sure all the players, not just some favored sons, were in a position to secure the badly needed extra earning that the Stanford game would have made possible.
