Ten years ago I applied for membership at Queen's Park Cricket Club (QPCC). It was the beginning of a long campaign to get the QPCC to allow women in. By October 2004, when the club finally voted to allow female membership, I was under no illusion that the vote was connected to anything but requirements to host ICC World Cup matches.

My first application had been rejected after three years, and after waiting the requisite six months, I'd lodged another in mid-2000. Last week, I received a call from the club advising me that my name was up before the Ballot Committee and I must attend a screening.

I can't believe that these anachronistic institutions still exist in the Caribbean.

There was a time, not too long ago, when people of the wrong hue would be summarily denied access to the inner sanctum of Kingston Cricket Club-the owners of Sabina Park-except, reluctantly, as servants.

The last I heard these dinosaurs-part of the virulent Old Boys Club-were still denying membership to women & access to the Private Boys Club.

I still can't undersatnd how the government of Jamaica could have virtualy given, at last count $US 28 Million to remodel their santuary of discrimination.

It would be interesting to see if, now that Jamaica has a female Prime Minister and one of the hue from which the maids and gardeners were traditionally drawn, this archaic practice is still in vogue.

And to think these are the morons who will reap the windfall from the World Cup, to the almost total exclusion of the real workers-cricketers and the common man-who will be investing the real sweat equity.

Listen, call me chauvenistic or whatever but Man need ah place to bitch about their wives/girlfriends in peace.....

...if women have a problem with that they should form their own club....

...but we all know how good women are at co-ordination and co-operation....

...which is probably why 4 of them can't piss in the same bucket at the same time.... :twisted:

I wish you all the best. I at first thought you were kidding then realised that you were quite serious.
Culture is an interesting thing and so I will reserve what is racing through my mind (pardon the pun) as to why women in this day and age would be treated like second class citizens or worse.
I have no doubt that this kind of thinking must have had plenty to say( or mumble) when our Donna Symmonds became a noted cricket commentator.

Share similar feelings as Ends. Men need a place , well, to be men. Talk crap, lie about our sexual exploits ...etc. It has nothing to do with excluding women.
In the past barber shops were an outlet ....we lost out on that .... Lions Club ... men only ...
Lioness Club ... women .... now all in one.
Although not a member, I enjoyed many evenings at the QPO Pavilion shooting the breeze and talking cricket.
I love women .... respect women ... however, my vote would be to keep the QPO Pavilion women free.

And when Kingston Cricket Club and other like it around the region, excluded Blacks or people of a darker hue from membership, I guess it was to protect our delicate sensibilities? :roll:

I can't imagine that on the day that we in these parts celebrate the peerless work of Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr and others, in atrying to eradicate bigotry in public accomaodation, we still have people suscribing to such garbage!!!

This has nothing to do with bigotry .... just an opinion by someone who is comfortable in his masculinity and enjoy the company of his male friends while sharing a drink and shooting the breeze.When our women are around we watch our language and jokes and focus on their enjoyment.
Unless it has changed the QPCC is a private club and can determine who they choose as their members.
If they are using taxpayers funds, that's different. If Kingston CC took 28M US from taxpayers then their club is no longer private. Same for QPCC.
Space does not allow other examples and details. Question for you ... since you talked about black people ... Have you ever wondered why some private clubs do not encourage or allow black people.....
generally speaking .... not individually ... Think about it. I guess the other races are all bigots.
We are so quick to condemn others as bigots and convey the impression that they are keeping blacks down .... out ... etc.
In the early 80's a newspaper report said that Desmond Haynes was not allowed in a Barbados nightclub { forgot the name }. Travelled to Barbados in 1983 - WI v IND ..
went to the Club to see if they would allow my friend and I .... No Problem .... now I'm dying to ask ... How come you let us in and refused Haynes ... a Bajan hero . He said the Club had dress codes ... Haynes was in short pants ...sorry we have rules and standards.

More bitching from Vanish, Damn Quixote...still tilting at QP windmill, still trying to convince us, since she could not convince them.

Would that she knew how to know when she's not wanted by people who have their right to not want her in their club and company.

Can't say that I blame them. The person I really feel sorry for is whichever man mek mistake to be her husband...present or future.

That unfortunate man will learn the true meaning of "henpecked" in the worst way. I bet he won't survive a year.
