West Indies stand in captain Chris Gayle spoke with the media after the 20 run loss to India in Cuttack on Wednesday. Following are excerpts from his responses:

On the pitch:
It wasn't the best wicket to play (One Day) cricket, as you saw the first over the ball popped out of the pitch, it was a bit dusty and slow but having said that we still had to play on it and in the end India came out on top on it.

First of all, after 7+ years of <40 averages in tests/ODIs, the idiot still does not know the difference between the "wicket" and the "pitch".

Secondly, he complains about losing early wickets but does not mention that he was the first to gift his wicket...the earliest and most damaging of all.

Thirdly, if one had any doubt of how big a fool he is, it is removed by his "there was no need for a spinner" foolish talk. Even as big a dunce as he is ought to know better than that after seeing the Indian spinners enjoy that pitch.

Gayle is a complete waste of time.

Wait....he's not such a fool after all...he can count to 2 and subtract 2 from 4...

In reply to redbaronprecisely...a spinner in the last 5 or 6 overs would have gotten the wicket and prevented at least 60 runs..he needed a spinner and not a captain who bowled 2 full tosses and 2 wides!!

I don't want to hear this man at all - After giving Sarwan so much trouble and hinting at leadership and captaincy through the media and mouth of the large Barbados one; he now wants a honeymoon period so he can make more mistakes inh the "Chris Gayle" style.

He does not have leadership qualities and should spend his time batting well (which he can), looking good (in his mind), and making jokes with his teammates (he has an excellent sense of humour). These qualities are not needed in a future leader - while Sarwan may or may not be capable, at least he is a thinker and does not buckle under pressure-What is wrong with you West Indians -

Is this a West Indian thing? - Why does everybody who bats well for a time believe that he should become captain- Is Kallis the captain of SA? Will Prince be soon? Work on the batting and leave the captaincy for old men like Lara and Chanderpaul- :evil:

I hope that you realize that you are not making any sense. Gayle did not appoint himself captain and secondly, he has proven that he is a better student of the game than Sarwan and Chanders. We should be encouraging the younger players to become more responsible but instead we beat them down if we think that their standing has improved over who we consider our favorites.

I view emotion as an element, a response mechanism activated and controlled by another element known as the Will which is influenced by intelligence.

Emotion is something physical, a chemical which keeps the heart beating and thus the body alive. Intelligence is not physical and therefore found only in the soul, the controlling inspiration of the whole man.

I didn't create the idea of the close connection between emotional intelligence and leadership - it is indeed quite a popular "theory" in the industry as is the study of emotions in successful individuals and teams (not necessarily sport.

Emotional intelligence is a multifaceted "leadership trait" that enables the leader to be aware of emotions in others, manage and regulate his own emotions and that of others in the pursuit of team success.

EI involves both the way we think and our social, communication, and interpersonal skills. It is intimately interwoven in core leadership functions such as teamwork, motivation, and cooperation -

Am I jumping on a fad? Why do i think that EI is needed on a West Indian cricket team? Am I againts Gayle? - No, a team like this is hard to manage and Richie and Brian found out - The team is unusally diverse in terms of countries, ideologies, personalities, backgrounds, and stages of adult development that it requires someone like a Lloyd who can manage the multiple social situations within the team- as we observed in the diaries - Not someone who sometimes -shuts down (BL?), shouts people down (VR?), ignores conflict (RR?).

If we do not see some of these qualities in Sarwan now, we can teach it, if he can't learn, then we need to look elsewhere, but is it in Gayle. . . nah man . . is it Wavell? He can't even make the team - Just work with Sarwan, nah :D

1) A spinner did bowl and went for 13 in 1 over. Sure he could have tried again or given Marlon a shot but that is that. India plays spin better than WI.

2) Do they say "a sticky wicket" or a "sticky pitch"

3) Yeah, he was the first to go. When Lara flops does he single out himself for scolding? Gayle said: "We". When Lara and Hooper flopped they said "They", excluding themselves from the blame. You wanted Gayle to say HE was entirely at fault because HE didn't stay with Chanderpaul????
