HEADLINE: Anthem Gaffe Embarrasses Grenada

A diplomatic gaffe marred the inauguration of Grenada's China-financed stadium when the band performed Taiwan's national anthem.
According to the Associated Press, Chinese Ambassador Qian Hongshan and scores of blue-uniformed Chinese laborers who built the new US$40 million Queen's Park stadium as a gift from Beijing were "visibly uncomfortable" as Taiwan's anthem echoed inside the 20,000-seat venue.

An article about this
"I am very saddened," Mitchell told the workers and Chinese Embassy staff from Grenada and neighboring Trinidad and Tobago. "This unfortunate error breaks my heart."
Police declined to comment except to say they would issue a statement later.
The Bush incident wasnt as serious, though since the correct anthem was played even though Bush himself seemed to have no clue of the difference between the "Republic of China" (Taiwan) and the "People's Republic of China"....
A similar mishap occured at the White House in April 2006 during a visit by Chinese President
Hu Jintao when an announcer called China by Taiwan's formal name.
As
President Bush and Hu stood at attention, an announcer said, "Ladies and gentlemen, the national anthem of the Republic of China, followed by the national anthem of the United States of America."
It was China's anthem that was played. But "Republic of China" is the formal name of Taiwan. China is known formally as the People's Republic of China.

I won't speculate on the sabotage thing. I can think of a million scenarios under which the the two anthems could get mixed up.
Remember that Taiwan was here until recently...and the Republic of China on Taiwan could easily confuse some new clerk who went to the file to get the anthem etc etc. Not making excuses...just saying it could just be a lack of due diligence, ignorance, incompetence ...wuhever.

This blame ought to lay squarely on the Prime Minister's Office.
A most diplomatic & high profile matter as this ought to have been screened via a 'check list' with the Highest in Command a la the PM's Permanent Secretary ensuring the opening ceremony in order. There he/she would have had to ensure the correct anthem just as the correct seating arrangements.
The PM ought to take blame himself for not checking with his Events Manager on all major points regarding the ceremony.
Nonsense indeed!
I will have to excuse the Police; set of dumbs dumbs dey are all known to be. Imagine they could not even fight a lil wind named Ivan. Chuts!

More woe for Mitchell
The bank is seeking to recover US$21.6 million from the Mitchell government plus interest payments for the loands that were taken to faciliate construction of the first sporting stadium at QUeen's Park, the Ministerial Complex at the Botanical Gardens, the agricultural sector, and for road construction projects on Mainland Grenada and the sister isle of Carriacou.
The legal action in New York follows close on the heels of another court action in the U.S against Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Gregory Bowen who has been sued along with three Russians by american oil investor, Jack Grynberg for US 500,000.00 over a deal that went sour.
Grynberg has also filed a multi-million dollar arbitration proceedings against the Mitchell government in Europe over the decision taken in St. George's not to honour its contractual obligations to him
Mitchell made his bed, he has to lie in it. And of course it's common folk that will pay the price.
