The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has issued a statement promising a full investigation into the allegations of match-fixing that have been made against batsman Marlon Samuels but made it clear it will not act on "rumour or gossip."

That Misinfo put up this headline with no complaints from the BCCI to the WICB or ICC is beyond strange but then they're Misinfo for good reasons.

well Marlon is already laying out his defense :

"Samuels, when contacted by Times Now, a TV channel, was quoted as saying that he knew Kochhar but was not aware that he was a bookie.".

Seeing how it has been widely reported that there is no evidence that money changed hands, the only obvious violation of the ICC code of conduct (apart from the nebulous "bringing the game of cricket into disrepute") is the failure to inform when contacted by the bookie.

As I suspected marlon is using the defence that he was unaware that the individual in question was a bookie. It would be very hard to prove that Marlon was aware of that, although you and I know that was almost certainly the case.

So, I do not expect any serious sanction to occur. However, divulging team secrets intentionally to anyone outside the team is an infraction in itself, never mind whether it violate sthe ICC regulations.

Here's what I expect to happen:

1. When the WICB receive a report from the ICC they will open an investigation.
2. With his conversation recorded Marlon will admit talking to the guy but deny he knew he was a bookie.
3. The WICB will say that Marlon remains available for selection while the investigation is ongoing and he will play in the WC.
4. After the WC, the WICB will find that Marlon did not violate the ICC code of conduct in that no proof exists that he knew the guy was a bookie. However, they will reprimand him for divulging team strategy and ban his for a couple games and possibly a very small fine will also be levied.

Very good response from WICB.

But don't be surprised if the record of phone conversations are actually legitimate (Indian police was spot on with Cronje, Gibbs, Azhar and others). WICB should then have to act carefully to make sure that a recorded phone conversation about team composition isn't automatically construed as a violation of the ICC code of conduct. A WICB-BCCI compromise, however unpalatable to many WI fans like you and definitely morally questionable, could still be in the best interest of WI cricket.

Dis ting is potentially more serious than you all are beleiveing. They said they was more than one conversation...and other information than batting order etc was given. Can we be sure that they are not holding back some info until the investigation starts?

That is the lamest excuse in the book, and cannot be allowed as a defence. I hope I do not have to explain the implicatons of accepting that to anyone here...even his apologists.

To accept that would be to open the floodgates for "I did not know he was bookie" excuses while match fixing left, right and center.

Fugg not aware....he's not to discuss those things with anyone who he does not know for a fact is NOT A BOOKIE OR HAS NO CONNECTION TO A BOOKIE.

I not buying that "not aware" crap, so as long as he admitted contact - in the face of indisputable evidence - he's guilty and must be excised from our cricket like a malignant cancer.

Christine the original report didn't come from Cricinfo, so i fail to see how or what you are blaming them for. Secondly, if this was all one grand conspiracy because the WI didnt support the Indian candidate Powar, i'm sure they would not have chosen Samuels to go after. Thirdly Samuels acknowledges having conversations with this Kochar fella. Fourthly, the Indian police said they passed the info on to the BCCI and the ICC, so far the ICC hasn't said anything, but i'm sure they must be considering how to proceed.

The only thing that is not known is what was in the taped conversations, whether in fact team composition or anything team related was discussed.

The grand conspiracy theory defense does not cut it!!

Of all the people who meet him, how come Samuels remembers Kocchar?
That alone should be cause for suspicion..
If someone is making allegations, the first reaction is to deny any acquaitance with that person.. Why is Samuels saying he knows the person?
I think the phone conversations will reveal a lot..
All these claims of Cricinfo and BCCI's conspiracy against WI is a pile of nonsense!

Well....seeing that the ICC just get charge with racism by (don't laugh) Hair....they probably won't be too shy bout counter-balancing that perspective by sacrificing a few black sheep...pun intended.

Why was Samuels speaking to Indian bookies on the phone of all things in India. Did he not read how the Cronje thing came to light? he would be so stupid to do that that we have to believe for the time being that this is all a lie.

This was a bad decision that Samuels made, not knowing he was a 'bookie' does not cut it. I am sure this was discussed before the Team left for India, if it was NOT this will show how stupid our cricket leaders are.
Lets hope for his sake the taped conversation(s)does not indicate a worse situation.

Paragraph #6 , in the WICB response " Particularly since we are talking about the career and future of a young cricketer of talent and promise "

Now I have deduced from this paragraph , that if the player wasnt young , and didnt have Talent & Promise , the WICB wouldnt be interested in the welfare of this player .

I have therefore concluded that , there was absolutely no reason for the WICB to have this paragraph . I would expect the WICB TO HAVE A KEEN INTEREST REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE PLAYER IS YOUNG OR OLD , AND REGARDLESS
OF THE PLAYERS TALENT & PROMISE .
