HEADLINE: What the Indian Police said...

CaribbeanCricket.com Feb 7, 2007, 12:06:09 PM

The following is the statement from the police in Nagpur regarding match-fixing allegations involving West Indies cricket Marlon Samuels.

"It was observed that one of the West Indian players, staying in the room number 2006 of the Pride Hotel, was talking to an underworld person who is also a bookie before the match."

The Indian police deciding on ICC breaches now? Look WICB not voting for Powar. Tell dem Indian police to look up their so called illegal bookies. Looks like dem in bed with them.

You like the mother who son was a thief and he get shoot, and you wail and bawl about how good he is.

What does Powar have to do with this?

She has a point...what business the Police have with an ICC code of conduct matter? They deliberately blurring the distinction between unethical and criminal.

You're like a scandal seeking Miss Lashie. I wait for the official processes to sort out rumours and innuendo. I prefer being me.

Larr Pullo Feb 7, 2007, 12:14:17 PM

In reply to ends

All they did was record and pass on the information to the BCCI...who in turn passed it on to the ICC. It's up to the ICC now to judge.

It looks like Samuels got caught up in the middle of an investigation of the gambler.

This is not to excuse Samuels; but it does seem odd that the Indian police are spending their time policing ICC codes of conduct. Aren't there any serious crimes in India?

Wally-1 Feb 7, 2007, 12:18:51 PM

""""that no player should talk to an outsider during the match""""

really?..but didn't he say they were talking before the match?

anansi Feb 7, 2007, 12:20:24 PM

All of these guys are connected to Indian underground mafia. Match fixing has caused India some serious embarrasment in the past.

bimbo Feb 7, 2007, 12:20:58 PM

I wonder what ever happened to that scandal with the "leaking of team information" in the Ashes?
I wonder why they took it so seriously? I wonder if the Barmy Army would have defended a player leaking such information?

Chrissy Feb 7, 2007, 12:36:04 PM

How the hell our players are supposed to nknow who is and who is not a bookie. You tell me who they must talk to with all these promotional events, modelling and other stuff.

This is nothing more than pre world cup psyc ops crap. Tell dem WI not voting for Powar yuh hear.

Surya Feb 7, 2007, 12:38:55 PM

Since you are spewing irrelevant nonsense, Sharad Pawar (and not Powar) doesn't care how the WICB votes..
WICB has to kiss BCCI's ass for money! Deal with it!

primedog Feb 7, 2007, 12:52:07 PM

All other things aside it seems kind of scary the difference in the amount of privacy that you can expect in India if they could tap the man phone base on "something fishy."

Jamaica so big and they can't find one lawyer to tell Marlon not to comment on this thing at this stage?

What the... what dat mean?
More fishy than that busy eyed Dravid

Larr Pullo Feb 7, 2007, 1:20:40 PM

In reply to vulcan

In India, "fishy" is probable cause....

They all use the British system of jurisprudence....

eg in Guyana they arrest people for "acting suspicious"...nowhere did they ever define what "acting suspicious" means.

So maybe Sammy shake the man hand and that was enough for them to get a wire tap...smile

Zito Feb 7, 2007, 2:06:09 PM

I had to ROTFL at the so-called police report...It is at first glance full of hot-air, but really not substantial or cast iron in the charge being leveled at Samuel.

In these days and ages of mass-media and wired world, the players SHOULD have known (they were probably told before hand) that they should be careful of talking to strangers or getting entangled with strangers including women when they're on tour otherwise they will get splashed across the local tabloid, or get their r@ss handed in by the local bobby brimming with bristling pride for some ego boosting.

Have allyuh forget the infamous bust up involving Akram, Younis, Mushtaq Ahmed & an another player who were all arrested by the Grenada police, accused of possessing marijuana during the 1993 Tour of the WI??? Oh look it's Grenada being mentioned AGAIN! LOL!

ProWI Feb 7, 2007, 5:08:08 PM

The only thing fishy about this story is the behavior of the Indian police.

No matter what the instructions were ahead of the tour, you mean to say one can't have an innocent discussion about cricket with another person?

I would have to hear the actual conversation on the police tape before I go hanging out Marlon to dry.

This all looks like a police sting, and after coming dry, the cops still decided to still brand Samuels with innuendo of wrongdoing.

michaelmax Feb 7, 2007, 5:19:14 PM

Is that an actual police report? That is the wort possible English I have seen. What does "fishy" mean? On waht authority did they tap the phone? On India you can just tap someon'es phoner/ No cour order etc? Something is rotten in the state of Denmark and that report stinks to high heaven

frangela Feb 7, 2007, 6:23:07 PM

If what is reported here is in fact a true account, then we are to ask ourselves:

Why de fcuk the player was detailing the info?

That is the key. We await the decision or decisions.

I do hope the player is not culpable

frank

watchman Feb 7, 2007, 9:51:14 PM

Like the emperor's wife, the players must all be above the appearance of suspicion. Under this standard, Samuels has erred.

thomasthomas Feb 8, 2007, 1:26:35 AM

Larr...Something I don't understand. Why Samuels is being allowed to speak to these reporters, etc and not through a legal mind? Where is Samuels..where is the management team?

What he says can be held against him. He needs to shut up and consult the management team first, then they should hire legals minds and speak on his behalf.

I think ignorance of the law is no excuse and I suspect the ICC will pin him. It's improper to give out any info on team's strategy, etc. He should know the fine prints of the game. He should have found it strange someone approaching him about info like such and entertaining it; whether he is a reporter, book-maker, opposition player. Dumb Move!

So well known illegal bookies (known to police) are allowed to walk the streets freely, even enter hotels (or talk on the phone-not clear) to meet cricketers and when those evil cricketers talk to them, they become fishy (suspicious)- sounds like Trinidad and Jamaica where crims are right and right are crims- That non-fishy criminal's phone is not wiretapped apparetenly, instead they wiretap the fishy cricketer - yep, wiretap based on ??? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

prasad Feb 8, 2007, 2:20:43 AM

ok jaydee...that bookie is also arrested and sent to jail....what will wi cricket gain from it...dont look beyond samuels in this matter..

Surya Feb 8, 2007, 2:34:22 AM

In reply to jaydee
Indian police do arrest and charge the bookmakers when there is firm evidence..It's just that that kind of news doesn't get splashed across the Caribbean..
Ironically, the shady transactions come to light only when the other party is famous..
It's very possible that these bookies are very elusive otherwise..
Before casting aspersions on the morality of a whole nation, you should have some common sense and think thru..

Chrissy Feb 8, 2007, 2:50:53 AM

We found the behaviour of Samuels was a breach of ICC code of conduct (that no player should talk to an outsider during the match) and we have communicated the same to the BCCI."

During a match? Wasn't the call linked to the hotel room as stated? During which match?
This is not even an ICC breach.

jaydee Feb 8, 2007, 2:55:16 AM

Look you are very respectful and i don't mean to insult you-however - seems like Trinidad to me- Kidnappers walk free, police are kidnappers, and the victims are to be blamed- crime and morality knows no country or genetic boundaries- and entire nations (not yours) can easily become corrupt (corrupted as in Hellenization of the Jews-334 BC to 70 AD), looking one way for some things and another way for others- You see crime, you should lock them up -maybe not 41 bullets-but alterness and action will do

Spicy Feb 8, 2007, 2:56:13 AM

Well said.
There may be a few corrupt officers but to tarnish the whole nation is ridiculous and that does not excuse Samuels if he is proven guilty.

Your pessimism about the efficacy of systems because of some blacksheep is NOT out of place..However one would find it very difficult to come to sweeping generalizations about any system in a democratic society..

Chrissy is afraid Lara would be implicated in this whole thing. WICB needs to act quickly on damage control and replace Lara as capo in addition Samuels should be left out of the final 14 to avoid distractions.

Lara's past looks shady with the Indian bookies.

well apparantly this particular playwer did know the man in question "Kochar" as did his mother (see her quote in cricinfo) He apparantly called marlon often and even spoke with his mum enquiring about Marlon's injury.
Marlon is either an absolute idiot or smoking something!!!
But for the other idiots on this MB to include Lara, when his name has not even been uttered, is malicious at best and libellous at better!

ashnal Feb 8, 2007, 10:26:33 PM

Hey Guys, First we need to stop packing this thread with name callings and tongue lashing (larr pullo & chrissy mainly). It does no good for the web-site . We need to stick to our points, jokes, comments and let the forum be pleasant to read.. and not crowed with junk. I dont know if any else agree with me?

As for Marlon. He has been playing cricket for a long time. He knows about bookies, India, and the problems associated with betting. He was very very wrong to indulge in any form of conversation with this guy during the tour. He should have known better, even if it was just friendly chat. Marlon is wrong, not in terms of legality or code of conduct (since we do not have a verdit), but wrong judgement, putting his cricket future in the spot light again, after a up & down journey. He has just put another blot in his cricketing future, for a guy who is trying to secure a permanent spot in the lineup. This was poor, poor judgement.

For those who wrote about Lara. His name has not been called, so no need to mix him up in this. For sure Lara, as better "tack" & plans in dealing with problems & situations - not sure if Marlon does..
