Once in a blue moon, a gift from heaven is handed on a plate (to paraphrase C.L.R. James). Despite the blistering organisational headaches they must be having, the West Indies Cricket Board and its subsidiary, CWC WI 2007 Inc., have been handed such a gift.
The first match of the ICC World Cup on March 13 takes place in Jamaica between the West Indies and Pakistan. That day marks the 40th anniversary of the death in 1967 of Sir Frank Worrell – icon of West Indies cricket and hero of the global game.

HEADLINE: A Worrell World Cup
In reply to CaribbeanCricket.com One of the principles I have repeatedly tried to enunciate on this board is the lack of historical context in most young people in the region.Of our current cricketers it is no coincidence that only Brian Lara seems to understand that.If you look at all sport, heck all fields of human endeavor, you will notice that all the great practitioners know about all the great ones that came before them.Whether it be Tiger Woods' appreciation of Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer or Serena Williams admiration of Martina Navratilova and Althea Gibson or Bill Clinton's understanding of the greatness of FDR,all the great ones know the history of the great ones before them. This author clearly has the intellectual bearings to understand that simple reality.
In reply to Dukes
You are right, of course.......but it is up to fellas like you to 'preach and teach' so that the 'Lara geneeration' pun dis board know that cricket in WI started long before BCL and will continue? after he has gone.
In reply to Dukes
I'm amazed that the article does not even mention that this entire idea came from Hilary Beckles at the University of the West Indies. Ah well.
In reply to Chrissy why you surprised,is this the first article you reading from this person?
In reply to camos
True
In reply to CaribbeanCricket.com
Wonderful idea Ms Baksh. Everyone reading this article should forward an e-mail to the WICB supporting your suggestion.
I remember the day he died ... I was a Form Two student at San Fernando Secondary, Trinidad, when our Maths teacher broke the news. He was almost to the point of tears. We stood up for a minute's silence in honor of Sir Frank.
I read the little green book " Sir Frank Worrell " by Undine Guiseppi. Sir Frank had a tremendous effect on my life .... my values, seeing myself as Caribbean not just Trinidadian and the way I treat and respect people.
One of my life's pleasant memories is sharing a drink with Joey Carew at the QPO Bar and recalling stories of Sir Frank. Carew revered Sir Frank.
Everytime I travel to Barbados I visit Sir Frank's grave.
In reply to Komando
But people are saying the idea is not she own. Maybe she can send a copy to Prof. Beckles.
MS Baksh , has written one of her best pieces ever . It clearly shows that she is not a member of the Charlatans who masquerade in this Region as Sports Journalists .
I must say also that I totally agree with her in calling our hosting of the World Cup THE WORRELL WORLD CUP .
Among the memorable things about Frank Worrell , that has much significance in my mind are these : Frank Worrell was THE FIRST BLACK MAN TO CAPTAIN THE WEST INDIES CRICKET TEAM . HE ALSO WAS THE PERSON WHO SINGLEHANDEDLY STATED THAT PLAYERS FROM THE WINDWARD ISLANDS MUST BE CONSIDERED FOR SELECTION TO THE WEST INDIES TEAM . Note it wasnt the WICB or the Selectors .
In 1960 while playing the first Test match against England at Kensington Oval , he imparted some of his knowledge to Garfield Sobers when they were both at the wicket , and the English spinner had Sobers in all sorts of trouble . Worrell called Sobers to a conference , in the middle of the pitch , they got a quick single , and Worrell, batting out of his crease dispatched the bowler for 2 consecutive fours and then sent Sobers to deal with the spinner . The result of this lession was Sobers 226 , Worrell 190 + runs .
True Frank Worrell was born in Barbados , but he was a true West Indian . who imparted his knowledge of cricket to various parts of the Region .
His Captaincy of the Team particularly the tour to Australia is incomparable . I seriously doubt that any team that toured Australia , had a send off like Worrell's Team did when thousands of Australians assembled to see the West Indies Team depart .
These are but a few of the reasons why in my opinion Ms Baskh has hit the nail on the head and the World Cup must be dedicated to SIR FRANK M . WORRELL .
Perhaps it may be to late , but some momentos or souvenirs of Sr Frank Worrell should be permitted by the ICC .
Obviously if the Pirates were genuinely interested in Cricket , people from outside their cabal would not have had to come up with this suggestion , they would have already thought about that . THEY PREFER TO LOOK AT THE FINANCIAL ASPECTS , RATHER THAN LOOK AT OUR CHANCE TO HOST THE WORLD CUP FROM A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE , AND THAT IS TRULY SAD .
In reply to Chrissy
The idea for naming the Cricket World Cup after Frank Worrell's memory came from a group in Trinidad, including Kirk Perreira. I put it to the CWC Board on their behalf, via first the Cultural Committee's Chairman, then the CEO, Chris Dehring. Hilary Beckles was informed and asked to assist in presenting it.
Wherever you received your information it is incorrect, and while the assistance of Beckles is appreciated, it is extremely unfair to the orginators to credit him with its conceptualisation. Further, I did not name an individual because the idea emerged out of a group's discussion of the coincidence of the dates.
Vaneisa Baksh
In reply to Chrissy
Does it matter whoose idea it was? Let us get past that. I am an avid reader of the two WI cricket sites .....never once I saw Prof Beckles idea in print. Maybe I missed it.
Let us make this a reality .... it is now a Caribbean idea. I am writing to the WICB later today.
Sharing a thought .... I am a highly successful businessman in the USA ..... never once I had an original idea. In fact whenever I had an original idea I was sure it would not work.
I took the ideas of people who were much smarter than me and helped others achieve a better quality of life.
In reply to Komando
No it does not matter but I do know the UWI was involved in the discussions.
In reply to Admin
Peace but the UWI is involved in this Worrell day.

In reply to Chrissy
wiping off the egg on yuh face
In reply to Chrissy
Right, but you claimed that this entire idea came from Hilary Beckles which is entirely wrong.
In reply to Admin
That is what I was told.
In reply to Chrissy
You knew "the UWI was involved in the discussions". If that is what you knew, how does that translate into: "I'm amazed that the article does not even mention that this entire idea came from Hilary Beckles at the University of the West Indies. Ah well."
It seems to me that by taking such liberties with your limited knowledge, you have embarrassed Hilary Beckles, who might now be accused of peddling the idea as his own; and you have sought to undermine the value of the content of my column by suggesting that I was trying to claim ownership of something not my own.
I never once said the idea was mine. It was part of a number of ideas on how to mark the moment. I supported this idea fully and expended an enormous amount of effort to ensure that the idea and supporting rationales were aired in the relevant places.
What debases your comment even more than its inaccuracy and the confidence with which you trumpeted it, is the attempt to divert the issue into one of who owns the idea, rather than further exploring the possibilities surrounding using it to help develop West Indies cricket.
- Vaneisa Baksh
Well said Vanesia!
These elitists must be put in their place!
It's only a matter of time until the entire idea morphs into one that was conceived by Brian Lara....
In reply to Larr Pullo
In reply to ray
Dude you see the politics of this?
A respected cricket and social columnist writes an article and a UWI prof openly accuses her of co-opting someone elses idea and presenting it as her own. Journalists have had their careers destroyed because of such offenses.
Worse, the accusation was leveled on the basis of hearsay.
Now many people read this board, it was a petty and unwarranted attack that reeks of elitism.
Some sort of verbal and written apology should be proffered to Ms. Baksh.
In reply to Larr Pullo
plus camos's response and her subsequent skin teeth...if Ms Baksh did not respond, this could have continued in an unwarranted attack on her character...it was heading that way
In reply to Admin
I doubt very much thay Hilary would be embaraased by being given credit for his idea...but I'll ask him.
Let me add that regardless of the originator of this excellent idea, it would not be implemented without the input of Beckles, and the UWI's contribution to the plan should have been mentioned.
I was wrong re 'the entire idea', but the UWI is involved in this special day.
In reply to Larr Pullo
Where did I suggest that Vaneisa was peddling this as her idea?
Stick with India times bro.
In reply to Chrissy
so based on heresay, you still maintain that it's his idea? Let us know what he says... 8)
This is a beautiful idea which should not be constrained by parochial squabbles about ownership.
If we are to honor Frank Worrell then we must follow his example and transcend, narrow insular elitist consideraions and focus on the virtues for which the man stood. After all this was a man who was born in Barbados but spent much of his adult life in Jamaica and dedicated his life to teh entire region.
While in Jamaica he also opted to play for Boys Town cricket club-based in the teeming Trench Town area of Kingston-instead of joining a club such as the elitist Kingston Cricket Club, which probably would not have accepted someone of his hue for membership anyway!
The forward-looking idea of naming the World Cup after Frank Worrell is now in the public domain and one would hope teh Board(s) would now take up the initiative
One is not hopeful however considering one group opted to mark the passing of the well-heeled supporter Uncle Les(well deserved, I understand) while failing to make any tangible acknowlegdment of the passing of West Inies cricket legend Alf Valentine, who had passed around the same time.
In reply to jacksprat
Frank Worrell certainly was not an elitist.
In reply to Larr Pullo
Were you a good slips fielder? Man every time Chrissy slips you dey to catch she.
In reply to Larr Pullo
You better recognise!!
As the only great batsman that we have produced in 2 decades-don't forget his almost 12,000 test runs-the DiBoss is responsible for everything of consequence in WI cricket.
Did you see that beautiful sunrise this morning...whom do you think was responsible for that?........DiBoss!!
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
actually it was Ms. Baksh that did the catching this time
In reply to jacksprat
Yeah when i rolled over and realized that the sun had risen yet again I said a silent thank you to lord lara.
In reply to Larr Pullo It's only a matter of time until the entire idea morphs into one that was conceived by Brian Lara....
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
ROTFLMFAO
Getting off de floor
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
In reply to ray
That wasn't a catching...that was a beat down.
Now you see why China had to send the elitist amongst them off to work camps.... :)
In reply to Larr Pullo
ah was gonna say bitch slap...but ah figure it was too strong
The facts -
1. The original idea of naming the World Cup after Frank Worrell was turned down by the Board.
2. All three UWI campuses, led by St Augustine's Principal, were brought into the picture.
3. The idea to celebrate the anniversary date was raised by Beckles and approved by ICC.
4. The ICC, WICB and UWI (with input from three campuses and related committees) are organizing the celebration of Frank Worrell.
Peace.
In reply to Chrissy
ouch.........u neva learn..........damn.......addle egg tuh boot
In reply to Chrissy
Who came up with the original idea?
In reply to Larr Pullo
it's obvious it wasn't Beckles...but she aint gon give up dat easily
In reply to ray
:D :D :D
In reply to ray
Beckles might be like one of them people on Startrek...he got one of them thought transmorgifier thingies that he could control your thinking and your mind!!!
In reply to Larr Pullo
The original idea was turned down. Still any suggestion to celebrate Frank Worrell is a great idea and for that he and the group deserve credit.
In reply to Chrissy
Tewarie and Beckles? How nice to be living in the land of taking credit-
Just let the idea germinate and grow, both manure and water are needed at the start ![]()
In reply to Ovalhead & Dukes
Check yuh PM.
In reply to Chrissy
I would still concur that your "Beckles" ownership of the original idea and then your concession that it was not ...reeked of petty island insularity.
When it was (as you believed) , Mr Beckles idea..you were indignant that he was not credited...now you know it was not...you refuse to give the same weight of acknowledgement to the team that did.
Now I, like many, think its a brilliant idea and matters not that it originated in Trinidad or Jamaica...as a guyanese and woman at that...petty island politicking got us into this mess after great men like Sir Frank and many before and after, had taken so much time, effort and blows, to place us in a position of respect and admiration.
shame on you chrissy for reducing the excellent idea into one of ownership, rather than one of merit.
Well done Vaneisa
In reply to windies
Information must be presented accurately.
Any bet that if someone approached the WICB with money they would gladly agree to name it the Frank Worrell World Cup .
Now that is one of the reasons why I call them PIRATES , AND THEY NEVER FAIL TO PRESENT TANGIBLE PROOF OF THAT FACT .
TO BE SADDLED WITH THESE MONEY HUNGRY APES , AND THEIR BEDFELLOWS , THE CHARLATANS WHO MASQUERADE IN THE REGION AS SPORTS JOURNALISTS IS REALLY OVERBEARING .
Here it is that a wonderful occasion is available for them to step up to the plate , and demonstrate to the young people in the Region the rich History of West Indies Cricket , and they have shirked one of their mandates . But that aint new they have been doing that for years , One only has to look at the state of Cricket in the Region , and the roller coaster performances of our team as tangible evidence of the failure of the WICB , in the governance of Cricket in the Region .
In reply to Chrissy
Would be nice if you authored a nice note of apology to Vanesia....
In reply to POINT
Why don't you just shut up?
In reply to Larr Pullo
Why don't you just shut up?
Do you still take time to read his one-note drivel?
I usually just scroll down when I see his moniker!
In reply to Chrissy The original idea of naming the World Cup after Frank Worrell was turned down by the Board.
I am 100% certain that the WICB would deny this.
To me it is almost inconcievable that any body in the WI much less the people entrusted with the administration of West Indies cricket would turn down naming the WC after Frank Worrell.
In reply to Dukes
It is not our World Cup - we cannot name it. It would set a precedent fo r other countries to want orld Cups named after their heroes as well. Makes perfect sense.
Makes sense that something is done... Looking forward to seeing and absorbing the result. My father worshipped at the altar of Sir Frank as the most elegant batsman he has seen in 84 years. I look forwarding to experiencing the tribute...
I wish allyuh would stop the backbiting about whose idea this is... Bottom line, hope the end result is worthy of the man
In reply to Chrissy Ah mere semantics my darling.
The act of dedicating the opening ceremony to the memory of Sir Frank Worrell who stood for all that is great in this noblest of games.

In reply to Dukes Well said Dukes!!!!
In reply to Admin In the true spirit of Sir Frank; let us move on with the more important matter.
For me Sir Frank is one of my personal heroes (actually, my only Barbadian/West Indian hero); he's right up there with the Mahatma; Mandela; Martin; and Ali.
If there is any way that I can help; and the rest of people on this board then we should move away from "setting the record straight" and get a straight record of showing the world OUR/WI icon of ill-repute; born of cricket died of legend.
I SUPPORT THE FRANK WORRELL WORLD CUP.
In reply to Larr Pullo
In reply to Admin Ryan, It is nice that you are responding to clear the air. Can I ask though why the author of the article is passing her messages through you.
Is there a fear of registering as a member and posting?

After all that inbreeding that goes on in the dots it was only a matter of time before one of you retards got access to a keyboard and started cluttering up Caribbean Cricket.
In reply to Larr Pullo You have to stop with this inbreeding gaff you know. It is not becoming to accuse a whole people of such acts.
In reply to Larr Pullo
Uncalled for. You were going well up until then

Man stop trying so hard to know me.. I quite happy not knowing you
Why you two ladies don't stop sniping at each other....
Y'all should be encouraging Chrissy to stop PM'ing her cohorts and come on the board and issue a gracious apology to Ms Baksh.
In reply to Larr Pullo
At least we did not resort to the gutter to respond to POINT's points. Have some class man.
BTW I agree Chrissy owes an apology...and so do you to POINT and all Dotties. Arseh....e
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
Yes Larr, do the right thing and apologize to point.
The older ones do quite well with the gossip and scandal themselves...Just an observation. And Larr you chose a Worrell thread to bring up this tired inbreeding thing...tut tut
In reply to anandgb
I'll apologize to my dottie cousins....POINT on the other hand has something wrong with him other than just run of the mill stupidity.
So to my Dottie cousins, i'm sorry...y'all are all not inbred, just Point!
Well done Kami...if it wasnt for you the stubborn,,,,, would not have hapologized.

In reply to Larr Pullo

Kami Thanks much for starting to tame the beast.

He really not too bad a fellow you know.He just getting carried away and then want to accuse Point of same. Now,if I can get Chrissy to do her bit then .....
In reply to OVAL291
I already tell you that you shameless..So rest yuhself
Yes, Chrissy owes an apology to Ms Baksh. Chrissy, yuh not too big fi sey sorry.
I remember my first encounter with Chrissy pon CANA board. The woman was wrong about a particualr issue regarding WI finances. Instead of a meek apology all she did was to accused me in turn of being wrong on certain semantics.
In any case, I can understand if ICC wants to discourage naming WC after personalities. It's a world event and it's naming should not be subjected to the flavor of just one region. Would we want certain political or religious symbolism masked under the shadows of cricket be imposed on the rest of the cricketing world???
Frankly, (no pun) I agree with that stance. However, there is nothing to say that the WICB could not dedicate it's hosting of it to the Great Frank Worrell. It's an excellent idea to wanna do that and thanks to the group that came up with that idea.
In reply to kami
nah why should I......Point is from dat era when da inbreeding do was da in ting in da dots
In reply to kami Yes he too stubborn and think his pride will be hurt if he apologize to Point.
Oval, you really shameless fu true. Alyuh should only talk when you have something nice to say about people. That claim by you and Larr is really beyond de boundary.

What to her cohorts via PM?
If you gonna slander Vanesia name you should do it out in the open.....
In reply to Larr Pullo
I totally agree and I told her such.
In reply to Rastaman
I owe no apology to anyone. Vanesia's article does not include the role of the UWI in the Worrell celebrations and she knows that the original idea was turned down by the WICB.
There is no doubt about where the original idea came from and I already dealt with that, but it is the three campuses of the UWI (comittee members from each)and the Worrell Foundation that is working with the WICB for the Worrell celebrations.
The WICB is merely the host for the ICC World Cup. We should all be very happy that ICC has allowed the first match to be dedicated to Worrell.
In reply to OVAL291
Check yuh PM and chill.
In reply to Chrissy
r u saying she tell a likkle lie.....nah I dont believe yuh....plus Ryan would neva post a lie like dat

I'm amazed that the article does not even mention that this entire idea came from Hilary Beckles at the University of the West Indies. Ah well.
In reply to OVAL291
This is shameless glory seeking by people at UWI.
It's sickening to watch it being played out here on CC.
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
The idea for the match to be dedicated to Frank Worrell came from who again? The original idea was to have the world cup called The Frank Worrell World Cup.
Now I concede that the group in T&T raised the issue of celebrating Frank period, but were I writing that article I would have mentioned both facts.
In reply to Larr Pullo
so true plus it also seems like a hen fight....I think Christine jealous
In reply to Chrissy
Keep going...ya coming round to a full apology...Gwaan Chrissy
In reply to Chrissy
So you're saying that this UWI group took someone elses idea, amended it a bit and called it theirs?
What do they call that in academic circles?
At the very least it seems like the UWI group seems to be glomming all the credit!
Maybe it's prescient that Vanesia put everything out into the public domain!
In reply to OVAL291
Jealous of what exactly? My comment was no different than comments I make re Coz or Fazeer.
I merely pointed out that the article omitted the role of the UWI in the project. That is a fact.
In reply to Chrissy
Is that all you did...or was something else intended?
In reply to Chrissy
No credit was given to any group. All that was mentioned was that a proposal was made to the WICB that the World Cup be named for Frank Worrell. In essence that his numerous contribution to cricket all over the world be recognized.
Why the blatant jockeying to point out that UWI wasn't mentioned?
In reply to Larr Pullo
Where did I say that?
The UWI thought it was a very good idea and when the original idea was rejected, the entire Unviersity, led by St Augustine, decided to find a way to celebrate Frank and all parties (ICC, WICB, UWI and other interested parties) agreed to dedicate the match to Frank.
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
The old innocent card......
In reply to Larr Pullo
they plagarize (sp) the idea
....shameless...is like I saying cc.com should be created as the voice of WIndies Cricket...and Ryan sayin..no no...Independent Voice of Windies cricket
![]()
thus RYan gets all the kudos...and I none
In reply to Larr Pullo
That idea was rejected because it is not out the WICBs World Cup. How many times must I say that.
In reply to Chrissy
So you admit that UWI is actually using the original idea of another group?
So they amended it a bit and made it more palatable does that entitle them to all the credit?
In reply to Chrissy
Yeah i got that part....still UWI cannot claim credit.
Just let the damn thing be world cup!
In reply to camos
What was that comment you made about Ms Baksh earlier?
In reply to Chrissy
The issue is not if or why it was rejected.
At issue is the strong insinuation that Hilary and not this TNT group, was the creator of the idea
In reply to camos
so why the pot shot at Ms. Baksh?
In reply to Larr Pullo
Credit was given to the group in T&T and they deserve credit for a superb observation, but the UWI also deserves credit.
In reply to Chrissy
"I doubt very much thay Hilary would be embaraased by being given credit for his idea...but I'll ask him"
-------------------------------------------------
so is it his idea or not. Please explain that remark.
In reply to Larr Pullo
My post is still there..nothing said here todate has changed my original opinion.

In reply to CaribbeanCricket.com
The possibility of a flag or picture of the great cricketing father leading the opening proceedings of World Cup 2007 simply fills me with great joy. Before there was a Viv Richards, Andy Roberts, Richardson or Ambrose, Sir Frank boldly prophesized for all to hear that the new cricket stars will be coming from the Combined Islands. All the pundits laughed at Sir Frank.
I know how hard he worked to make that a reality. Sir Frank used to just materialize onto the estate near my village to play pick-up games with the the estate workers. He was able to attrack all types of people to participate in a game. I remember witnessing the father of an ex-combine-island player playing against Sir Frank's team and bowling him twice with his leg-spin. He took 6wickets for 3runs in one of the innings. I mention this because that man was my neighbour and though I played cricket regularly with his son, I had never seen this man near a cricket field before far less that he was an unplayable spinner.
This story is just a lone example of the tale of this great visionary with impossible goals and impeccable methodology to achieve them. Genius at its best. Even more unthinkable was that he was dying; but he never talked about that. He was literally the last person to leave the field as he took the time to simply talk to all who just wanted to meet him and shake his hands. All of my friends and I did on numerous occasions. I am yet to meet a humbler person.
Oh how I hope our current administrators will study how Sir Frank could have generated so much interest in the game in such a short time over both the Windward and Leeward islands. There can never be another FW but how I wished that his understudies (Sobers, Hall, Griffith, Kanhai, Solomon, Butcher, Gibbs, Murray, B.Davis,...), will become true disciples and begin to preach the pure gospel of caribbean-cricket as per the great one.
It wil be so much more noble if the parties on this board will put their focus on the great Sir Frank and not upon themselves. Tell the young ones about his exploits. Tell the world!!!! Let them hear first hand why NO CRICKETING FIGURE IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME CAN CHALLENGE HIM IN INTEGRITY, LEADERSHIP AND LOVE FOR THE GAME AND ITS PEOPLE. Tell them why a cricket cup was named in his honor in India. Tell them why an Australian population gave him and his team an exit parade that stretched for miles and miles. And we lost that series. Tell them about his batting and how he came to bowl left-handed. Tell them the real reason for his Knighthood. There is lots to tell so tell it nuh.
Come on people on this cc board; rise up above yourselves and size this moment to make this a great day in honor of a great man. There is a time and place for everything. This is not the time for pettiness.
Why stop with just naming a cricket event after him? Let's forward his name to the Vatican for beatification and ultimate sainthood.
On second thoughts, we could even institute a new religion around Him.
In reply to WMD Man kerry you skunt.
In reply to krickit
Frank was the best thing that ever happened to WI cricket. What a pity he died so young.

This is just not cussing dude...
Dying young is a good career move for potential saints-cum-religious founders.
Frank was the best thing that ever happened to WI cricket.
That's Sir Frank, to you. Or Saint Frank, even.

In reply to WMD
I suspect WMD that you're probably young and know little about this great man. Nothing wrong with that but keep an open mind to what you're gonna hear about a man so high above people like me, yet if you met him in person, he was as meek as can be. I was a child when I met him, but I'll never forget what I've witnessed and I'm honored to tell whoever will listen about such a great statesman.
True, I don't know much about him. I keep getting him mixed up in my mind with Martin Luther King.
Thanks u guys for stopping the fighting. Now let's big-up the biggest cricketing personality in history. Talk about his yagga stylish approach to batting; a prominent member of the three W's. Talk about his life; a life fully committed to the game of cricket, not just W.I. cricket. Let the members of this board rise and shine to the glory of this cricketing king. He earned it.
In reply to WMD
WMD I know u're having a little fun. That's cool. But if u really don't know the details about Sir Frank, his batting, his captaincy, his on/off the field leadership, his genius in keeping a W.I. team at the top of their game when very few of them were been exposed to internatonal cricket. How did he do it? What did he do to foster team unity and individual standard when the team had no cricket for an entire year and generally had only one tour per year.
But Sir Frank's real contribution to caribbean cricket, in my opinion, was the fire he lit in the people wherever he went. He used to make the W.I. team go to different islands and meet the youths. Wes Hall, Charlie Griffith came to my small island to teach us about fast-bowling. Sir Frank also made the West Indies team engage the small islands in matches, sometimes exchanging himself for a promising young local player. He usually captained the local team.
I only know what he was doing on my island. I have no idea the extent of his work in Barbados and Jamaica where he resided. I hope the Jamaicans will speak up and give the man his dues.
In reply to krickit
Bredren, my old man can go for hours about Sir Frank.. if I get him started, he won't stop.
I does read the most jobby on this MB sometimes....not referring to the article
In reply to Larr Pullo
The feeling will always be mutual . So perhaps , now you can cease and desist .
I find it very strange that only you and a few other Blowhards of your ilk , seem to be offended when I criticize the WICB and the Pseudo Sports Journalists in the Region .
Normally , when people disagree to something that is written , they put forward reasonable cogent points why they disagree or agree with what is written .
Neither you as the leader , and any of the Mongrels have done that in ANY of my posts or threads . Rather than verbally illustrating that what I have written isnt factual , or in error .
I have come to the conclusion that by being insultive it somehow boost your ego , frankly it only displays your pygmy sized brain that allows you only to be insulting to people .
Oh and btw , before you respond , THE FEELING WILL ALWAYS BE MUTUAL .
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
I dont expect to recieve any apology from the pygmy sized brain guy ,
He relishes in being boorish , cantankerous , and stupid .
It is unfortunate that he and the idiots of his ilk seem oblivious to the fact that their stupidity is out there in cyberspace for all the world to know of their crass stupidity .
You would have noticed by now that neither he nor any of his ilk refute what I say but instead believe that by being insulting , automatically means that they have scored points while not rebutting what I write .
I take solice in the fact that those who disagree with what I have written are just a few Blowhards .
In reply to krickit
I have stated what you have said several times on this MB , regarding Frank Worrell .
Unfortunately there exsists a few jackasses on this MB who always take umbrage to my stating that fact , and then believe that by calling me insular , etc , that would obfuscate the truth .
It definitely wasnt the Selectors or the WICB that came up with the idea that the Players from the Windward & Leeward Islands deserve to be considered for selection to the West Indies Team .
It is very well known that in the Region good ideas that come forward from persons outside of the various cabals in the Region aint going to be used , simply because someone from inside the cabals wasnt the author of that Idea , they therefore discard it .
In essence they hate the idea that someone from outside their circle came up with an idea that they should have thought about themselves .
In this regard the WICB is following that pattern . I am reasonably sure that had that idea originated from a member of the WICB , they would have run with it . But since that isnt the case , they have shot it down . They are of the belief that they and only they can produce good ideas .
It is because of this close minded attitude why very little has been done to improve Cricket in the Region , and also to improve the competitiveness of our team .
I suppose that the WICB seeks solice in the fact that it isnt the only one in the Region that relishes not accepting good ideas from outside their circle .
In my opinion they and all authoritative Organizations and individuals need to accept good ideas regardless of where they originate .
In reply to POINT Bro, no one really hates the people from teh islands. These guys simply like to poke fun at people who take them on.
Just try to ignore them and eventually they themselves will feel silly picking on you.
In reply to Banner There are two men Lara tried to emulate: Sir Gary on the field and Sir Frank off.
That should tel you something.
Some aspects of this debate is most disheartening. Most un-Worrell-like. Exactly what he disliked most. It leaves his legacy open to questioning; was he truly great or a dreamer?
To the educated gurus on this board: Two questions;
1. Are we too smart for our own good? (has education done us a disservice)
2. Are we divided or united by water. (water = Life)
On the lighter side; I am a bird so I am staying out of a cat fight.
That's my Worrell late cut. Drive-on.
In reply to anandgb
It is my intention to take them all on , particularly when I am right .
Perhaps all the years I have been telling the Jackasses that Frank Worrell was the person who insisted that players from the Windward & Leeward Islands be considered for selection to the West Indies Team , not the Selectors or the WICB , THEY BELIEVED THAT I HAD MADE THAT UP .
But to quote a line from one of Chalkdust kaiso " I WAS IN TOWN , AND I WAS AROUND " WHEN WORRELL STATED THAT . I therefore knew that solid evidence existed to buttress what I have continuously stated .
I have been looking at Cricket and following cricket for a long time . Unlike these just come fools , that populate this MB .
Ms. Baksh , wrote an article about the legacy of Sir Frank Worrell , the jackasses , as usual have tried to hijack the article , by being boorish , and uncouth .
They have always relished any chance to make asses of themselves , completely oblivious to the fact that there are intelligent people all over the world who read this MB .
In reply to Chrissy
It took me one day to come to grips with this debate - Why do you want to give UWI, or more specifically the Tewarie/Beckles brigade, credit for an idea that originated outside this divisive ivory tower within the pure minds of amharets (people of the earth)? - If someone has to repeat an idea, copy or translate another's work, or disseminate information for a sponsor, why would that one even seek significant credit? Framk Worrell worked in the UWI, so they should have originated and promoted the idea a long time ago, not wait on others to come up with it and then strive to hijack -Worrell was a good man, a man of dignity and honour, not a persistent political snake -why stain his memory with this fight over UWI paramours?
In reply to jaydee
What's even more ironic is that during the last SA tour when SA played a tour match at the St. Augustine campus, they couldn't even spell the man(Worrell) name correctly on the scoreboard! Now they are fighting tooth and nail for undeserved credit.
I guess the World Cup and some attention brings out the worst in people.
In reply to jaydee
Because without their participation there would be no celebration, regardless of who had the original great idea
In reply to Larr Pullo
You have elephant memory. I now remember this embarrassment

In reply to Larr Pullo and Jaydee Alyuh know Chrissy will not give up on here convictions (only if Lara tell her to), so Alyuh leave well enough now, how much licks you wan put pun 1 person?
In reply to anandgb
Razz, I just see this. One of Vanesias best posts on the front page. Sir Frank Worrell is an icon and any event or occasion to celebrate the legacy of this truly wonderful West Indian should be gladly entertained.
Chrissy,
You never cease to amaze and people here should know why posters sometimes have issues with you. I must be really dumb but for the life of me and my forefathers I cannot see how this:
Could be paraphrased as this:
It would have been much better if you had just accepted your error, apologized and then inform others of the additional information that you knew of. No.. but in your effort to maintain your status among your groupies you cannot appear to be wrong well deal with it .you were way off base.
It is really sad that you sought to debase a really good article in your quest for gratifying your own secular interest. Why do you always try to put down others you obviously dont like? Or is that you hate being less than first in bringing some things to the fore?
As a supposedly objective persona, who has been charted with the responsibility to guide our young minds, you should learn to put aside petty differences and personal preferences. You need to learn to objectively analyze another persons point of view even when you dislike that view or the person presenting it. A just so me see it!!!!
Peace and love
In reply to Nekt
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!! Phew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another body blow for CHrissy? Will she... Can she survive this?
In reply to Nekt
Clearly you did not read the entire thread. I admitted that I was told that it was his idea and the person with the original idea deserves credit, but that the role of the UWI in ensuring that there was a Worrell celebration (following the rejection of the original idea) should not have been omitted. We can differ on this one.
This thread saddens me.... :(
Chrissy's initial response and her subsequent responses are
typical of her ... Which reminds me of one George W. Bush.
Nekt hit the nail on the head with this point ..
with the responsibility to guide our young minds, you should learn
to put aside petty differences and personal preferences
Sadly she is tasked with grooming future WI leaders
In reply to Larr Pullo why so?
Why are you so saddened that Chrissy has not apologized as yet??
In reply to Chrissy
Is UWI really that important to cricket in the region?-Only recently has it turned some of its distorted attention towards to sports and then in a half-hearted way-Any first class or test cricketers shepherded/mentored/encouraged/employed? Wasn't Ganga once in first year law? Is Croft still working there? :D What about that young prosepective doctor, still batting, or can't, because of exams? Is UWI helping cricket in Jamaica? Maybe Wavell Hinds might be encouraged to do a degree, but "deh degree so hard and abstract" he might bat just worse :P Can most cricketers even get into the UWI? Does Cave Hill do anything for cricket, save provide more Beckles talk - Should Sobers have a developmental post there, why doesn't he not? - For exaemple, in China, many of the all the old great table tennis (the national sport) have University posts- Liang Ge Liang -UWI indeed- The University of Wicked Intellectuals :D :D :D :D
An article by V and RB nuh suh nuttin........I am glad he has taken my advice........Well done Redbaron
(okay, young turk here)
First of all- damn amusing thread...but if we going to get worked up everytime Chrissy purveys wrong information.....well...
Secondly- Grow up Chrissy! Sheesh. You seem more preoccupied with the origins of the idea (a dumb one at that, on which I'll elaborate anon) than the supposed efforts to realise it.
Now, onto the dumb idea itself.
As a Young Turk, I have no idea of "what he meant to WI cricket". Guilty as charged ( and I can see Dukes putting down his walking stick to grab that fodder). I will however, rely on the many representations on this thread and concede that this gentleman deserves the highest accolades that WI can bestow.
However, the ICC World Cup is not ours to give. That come like ah man lend yuh he car and yuh lend it to somebody else.
We had what used to be one of cricket's grandest inanimate icons named after Sir Frank Worrell already. And we all know what happened to that. If we really want to honour Sir Frank, let's try win that back......what we seem to be conspiring to do is to hand the Aussies yet another piece of silverware named after the great man....way to go!
I hate the idea because it claims ownership of what is not ours. But more, in low simplicity, it belittles the very region known as the West Indies. I mean it's like we're begging for a "bligh". Yet another tokenistic recognition craved by a people that will never again know domination on the world stage in cricket or other forum so we sentimentally cling to any vestige of glory that exists.
Would a developed country, confident in its future sporting prowess, even conceive of begging an international association to name something after a past star? Here we are again, confirming our status as "underdeveloped"; pathetically believing there is something beyond the boundary, heroic, lengendary and enduring that can be reclaimed by vicariosly attaching past glories to present undertakings.
You want to do something for Frank Worrell? Win the World Cup and dedicate the victory to him. Period.
(not a man move)
In reply to ends
excellent post sah-nuff respect
If Sir Frank Worrell was alive today, he would have embraced BOTH Chrissy and Ms Baksh and sent Larr, Rastaman and company to the back of the room.
In reply to ends
well, well, well said sah!!!
not all of it but I definitely like the win the whole goddamn shabbang and dedicate the Victory to Sir Frank...all on board say AYE
In reply to ends
Myself and a friend were very depressed when WI lost the Worrell trophy in 1995..We used to tell the rest of our mates that "they(WI team) will prove that Frank Worrell is West Indian, meaning WI will regain the trophy soon"..Alas!It hasn't happened..
I couldn't agree more with the sentiments you've expressed..
Winning this WC or the Frank Worrell trophy back will put all these "who propsed the idea" discussions on the back burner..
In reply to Surya
I am still amazed that big people want to name something we don't own after one of us...how Chrissy say it?
You can't sell what you don't own.
In reply to ends
How ironic is it to lose Sir Viv Richards trophy!
Be glad that the Clive Lioyd trophy is with you (named after the most successful captain in WI history)..
In reply to ends
Very good piece. For us its all form before substance. Give us a token and you can rob us blind.
People in this region like to boast about being the best, the first, the greatest about so many unimportant things.
Go to any island and you will find a bunch of unimportant nonsense that they pride themselves in being the best at.
We were brought up on tokens and its all there in our psyche, the WICB, the governments, the intellectuals all included.
Talk about winning the world cup for Frank Worrel...wid Dwayne Smith? Nothing reflects the trajedy more.
What system allows a regional team to pick a player for the highest stage who has not performed in four years? Would Frank Worrel ever have done that and left Darren Sammy out?
The answer is NEVER.
But in this modern West Indies, with more insularities, mis managemnt and sheer stupidities than Frank ever could have imagined its what we have.
