HEADLINE: Why CLR said no to Worrell

Not more than three months after the historic tied Test at the Gabba in Brisbane, Australia, CLR James would aggressively insist that Frank Worrell should not be named captain for the tour of England scheduled for 1963.

Worrell had been made captain for the 1960-61 tour to Australia and his appointment had been even more aggressively sought by the same CLR James, who had campaigned long and strenuously through the pages of The Nation, party paper of the People's National Movement, which he edited. Full Story

clr not yet world noted author....clr,tt, caribbean lacked heroes...bim wid 3Ws, challenor etc had surplus heroes...clr picked and worshipped one

Remuneration .....but I wish they were paid on performance not seniority(and fighting for results not pay) and a greater amount went to the players in the regional tournament.Right now the senior players make a lot more than the rest and have no incentive or desire to play regional tournaments .

Surely you agree the amount paid for the world cup is more than fair?The real issue is what do wicb do with the rest and how does cricket become sustainable in WI after the world cup.

Impossible! rolleyes This boss article is also a condemnation of all those who, being leaders, do not adorn themselves with the Worrell mantle of leadership. wink

All those who, instead of helping to create ways of binding disparate elements together, see nothing more than the vagaries of islands of discontent and not the opportunity to embellish the Worrell mould.

One question, though. Did Vaneisha unearth everything that CLR had to say about the Australia tied test series? There was, I believe, a strong feeling that he thought Worrell had capitulated by not insisting on the West Indies' pound of flesh (with the bad umpiring and all that).

Anyway, a wonderful tribute very well written. By far her best.

Both C L R James & Sir Frank had their unique role

to play in building the prestige of West Indies.

If Worrell had been more confrontational West Indies

may have won a cricket series, however, we would

have lost the fans. It was the Australian

fans who recognised us for being able to tie

on a playing field that was tilted against us.

CLR's exhortations on pushing Frank to captain the West Indies was about much more than cricket. It was about West Indian self determination. It was to show the world that we as Black People could control our own destiny. It was about throwing off the yokes of colonialism.
