4. Establishing firm criteria to guide the selection of the Captain including leadership ability, performance, commitment and general attitude, as well as standards of health and fitness.

Dr Sidie - look like dem contriving to eliminate your son on the basis of commitment general attitude health and fitness.

birdseye Apr 23, 2007, 11:38:14 AM

In reply to CaribbeanCricket.com I was of the opinion that most of the steps they outlined were things that were all implemented and were in full flow, so what is this all about, what were they doing all along?

FanAttick Apr 23, 2007, 11:39:03 AM

In reply to Larr Pullo

btw - when since Board dictating criteria for team selection? Isnt that the purview of the Cricket Committee(formerly Win World Cup Committee)?

The only criteria that should be dictated by the Board should do with matriculation - such as playing in a minimum number of regional games, etc.

Dem Trini dangerous eeh. This is a backdoor attempt to disqualify Sarwan - and sneak in Cannabis.

How soon before somebody claims these measures as WIPA's idea?

On another note, Lara to join cricket committee?

"The Cricket Committee will be expanded to include more players who recently retired from the game."

nissan Apr 23, 2007, 11:56:38 AM

Well if the team is actually announced on the 25th, that will be the 1st sign that these peeps mean business!

That is an attempt to load up the cricket committee with Trinis - so that they will control the nomination and confirmation of the captain.

Dem Trini dangerous eeh. This is a backdoor attempt to disqualify Sarwan - and sneak in Cannabis.
as Ronald Regan would say – here we go again – that IMO would only continue to perpetuate the disharmony that was reported to be part of the team’s culture.

This WI cricket seem irretrievable lost for the foreseeable future because nobody is looking at the big picture, everyone just seem to be looking out for their guy.

FanAttick Apr 23, 2007, 12:21:01 PM

In reply to birdseye

Flashback to 1997. Robert Samuels had just returned from a difficult tour of Oz when he scored 76 and 35* in the last test at Perth that WI won.
The next WI series(at home)was against India(much softer opposition than Oz). Traditionally Samuels would have been the automatic choice for opener on two counts.
1. He was part of a winning team
2. He performed very well in his last test

But lo and behold Wes Hall the then chairman of selectors announced a new criterion for selection. Instead of performance to date in tests - selection would be based on form in the regional tournament.
On this basis Stuart Williams(who had a miserable career up to that point) was selected ahead of Samuels who never saw WI colors again.

This is exactly the situation that is happening today with the rules of engagement changing in mid-stream to justify the appointment of Cannabis and the avoidance of the inevitable Sarwan captaincy.

When I cuss peeps on this board who remain silent unless it is dem boy who is the victim peeps seh dat I insular. Sarwan is not my boy per se - but I hate to see injustice meted out like this.

Twissy and co - are so up in arms that Zee Prince gone - dem couldnt care less what happen to anyone else. In fact misery loves company so they would be more than happy to see Sarwan left out in the cold.

anandgb Apr 23, 2007, 12:57:03 PM

In reply to FanAttick What you are saying makes sense, else why start this crap now about new captaincy selection process?

The other thing is if Sarwan is rightly given the opportunity to govern, by teh delay?

I smell some fish that have been out in teh sun for a while..........

It would definietly be a travesty if they further screw around with the team by dissing Sarwan once again.

It all shows that these guys are not concerned with building and winning. I wonder if any of thme really do think that Sarwan will be a happy camper playing to their fiddle for teh rest of his life?

Reallll disgusting indeed.

Let them give it to Ganga...no person has a right to the captaincy. Either he'll thrive or he'll crash and burn.

Sars just has to score his runs and keep working on his game.

anandgb Apr 23, 2007, 1:13:27 PM

In reply to Larr Pullo So you playing a non-player cappo?

dcbreds Apr 23, 2007, 1:19:06 PM

In reply to anandgb

Steeeuuuppps.

These guidelines eh mean jack.

Accountability in their terms means that they will all accept responsibility for whatever decisions WICB makes. However, it does not make them accountable to anyone outside of WICB.

They talk about stakeholders. Their definition of stakeholder does not include WI supporters.

So all they are really doing here is circling the wagons and strengthening the cabal.

Larr Pullo Apr 23, 2007, 1:20:23 PM

In reply to anandgb

Right now Ganga is a sure pick on the test team.

Whether he could retain that status under the pressure of the captaincy remains to be seen.

anandgb Apr 23, 2007, 1:22:59 PM

In reply to dcbreds I nominate you as ourt representative on the board. And if they give you a hard time about it, tell them you will have Ziks talk to them seriously.

Tell them not to mess with us fans cuz we also have an Inhouse attornet, surgeon, a few Drs. of internal medicine ( this is a serious threat for those who resist)
and a few psychologists as well.

anandgb Apr 23, 2007, 1:24:47 PM

In reply to Larr Pullo He is a sure pick for teh test team for how long? I would rather see him perform consistently for another 2 tours at least before making such a claim.

Remember how much a certain pick Hinds was that Fazeer was singing his praises as a leader?

Who will captain the ODI team?

southward Apr 23, 2007, 1:41:15 PM

as far as i am concerned this is the most important point of the release, its not who is gonna be captain...its this:

5. Rationalising where necessary existing procedures and conflicts of interest.

i dont trust existing members of the board and its surrogates to do this on their own. that would be like the proverbial police, policing the police. make no mistake, this is about the feeding tree, the trough that the snouts have feasted in. so i am far from convinced that the existing board members can do this on their own. this is learned behavior. its difficult to unlearn without some mechanism aimed at inculcating the new behavior.

its very clear that moves are afoot to rebuild. how earnest are they? if ganga is elevated to skipper and reading between the lines id say that this is not as improbable as it first appeared - id say they are doing him a disservice because:
* The selection of a new Captain for the England Tour will be based on criteria agreed to among the Board, Cricket Committee and the Selectors. The appointment will be for a limited duration during which time the performance of the appointee will be closely monitored and evaluated.

whoever is appointed, my view is that he would need a full vote of confidence. one tour away from home in england is not a full vote of confidence. it is at best a limited endorsement. and in all probability the new cappo will not acheive instant results especially as he will be working with a new coach who has a new ideas and a new style. whoever is appointed that would be the real basket to carry water.

Looks like Ganga will be Test cappo. Fat boy Sarwan better start running laps to qualify as ODI captain big grin

southward Apr 23, 2007, 2:04:40 PM

In reply to powen001
i only pose a very obvious question. how can they possibly do it?

i draw your attention to the following;

1. Confidentiality and public statements.
2. Principles of accountability – accepting responsibility for individual and collective actions.

there is something all together weird about those two. ryan and tony deyal (wicb marketing) have had a running battle on confidentiality of the board. well here ryan is vindicated...they have openly acknowledged they have a problem.

and here in #2, something totally foreign to boards traditional and historical way of doing things is suggested. in fact its foreign to caribbean life in general. so id say someone or some faction in the board is starting to raise the real issues?

it seems too, they someone knows that we will have wholescale changes for the tour to england (if it goes ahead).

carib Apr 23, 2007, 2:05:47 PM

In reply to southward

Actually, given the problematical nature of both Sarwan & Ganga as captaincy picks, they are wise to make the captaincy appintment a short term one. NO One is really confident that either of those picks will work out.

carib Apr 23, 2007, 2:07:20 PM

In reply to carib

but, let me asks you, whoever skippers wot type of results do you expect in england. its clear theres going to be names you and i would not think obvious picks, i expect with a new team, we are likely to fold in the tests. and we may win a game or two in the odi's. overall we are going to loose again.

if the cappo is gonna be evaluated closely then results will count. lets say for arguments sake they pick ganga. he loses and he has an iffy series with the bat.

wot then?

jacksprat Apr 23, 2007, 2:13:32 PM

I wonder if Ganga were made captain-not coincidentally another compatriot of the incumbent president-we would have a pricipledoutcry against the manipulation of the process, by changing the criteria in midstream, to benefit a homeboy, we would have a principled denounciation of this travesty, by the same forces that objected to another president having two of his countrymen as captain while he was in office?

Just wondering......

Larr Pullo Apr 23, 2007, 2:29:25 PM

In reply to jacksprat

What's midstream? Obviously the WICB is an organization in flux so they can make any change as they see fit.

Like I said there is no enshrined constitutional edict that would be violated if Ganga was made captain ahead of sarwan, i just hope that whoever it is would be supported and ready for the job.

jacksprat Apr 23, 2007, 2:38:13 PM

In reply to Larr Pullo

Well the criteria really are incidental to the premise of something being sinister-as was once claimed-for two captains to come from the same country as the president wink

Moreover, I seem to recall as big hue and cry when the recommendation of the selector was ignored and the President/Board opted to go in another direction with regard to the captaincy.

In a word, the main issue is one of consistency....big grin

Cleg Apr 23, 2007, 3:39:15 PM

In reply to FanAttick

1. He was part of a winning team
2. He performed very well in his last test

The last time this was mention.....Dukes was on here like shot to point out that Samuels...had poor recent form.....and that`s the only reason he was dropped !!!!

bobby Apr 23, 2007, 3:58:29 PM

Unfortunately, all of these big ideas about the criteria to choose the captain has been created simply to screw Sarwan. It shows that the more they claim things change the more they remain the same. I don't think Sars should be the Captain but why not just say so or appoint him for one tour. After all he has been Vice for two terms. Why all this intrigue? Andy Roberts wants Bouncing Joseph but I believe Ganga would be a better choice right now. As I have said before Sars has discipline and fitness problems and he is part of the most indisciplined group in this present team.Ganga seems to be a natural leader and he is not afraid to drop the axe when needs be.

sudden Apr 23, 2007, 4:15:07 PM

sarwan has no birthright to captain the wi. from what i saw at the games he seems fat, unfit and disinterested. maybe he will improved his fitness regime once captain.

i believe he will be made cappo because it is the logical thing to do for continuity stake.

however if wi go a different route i see only ganga as an alternative. Joseph is too far removed to be cappo unless all the front line players are dropped or a scab team selected.

and despite you think roberts believe wi cricket decisions are not driven in Antigua.

let me give you a hint who expose all thing crap. where did it gain momentum?

bata Apr 23, 2007, 4:21:51 PM

In reply to Larr Pullo thirty mile jog will put him infront of Clide Butts home at Perseverance Mahaicony. Unity is about 23 miles.

bata Apr 23, 2007, 4:23:31 PM

In reply to anandgb Anand you really think dem guys gonna give Ganda their support? Wait and see, watch the ride.

gusta Apr 23, 2007, 6:05:00 PM

Folks.

Ganga has not been included in the ODI, therefore he is not an automatic choice for captaincy of ODI. They will play 3 Tests & 4 ODIs.

Since Sarwan is qualified for both levels, I don't see them messing with the rebuilding process, by selecting an uncertain/unkown quantity at this time.

Moreover, what does rebuilding means in the WICB? After $1million plus and two years at it, you cannot defend 300 runs.

I suggest that the WICB, withdraw from the TEST & ODI and rebuild
at home. Don't send more
fodder for others to set records at our expense case in point, the recent Pakistan & Sri Lanka's recent tours.

G

terryfinisterre Apr 23, 2007, 6:36:11 PM

Only five men are "automatic" choices to thw West Indies team at present, and one of them is hanging by a thread. Messrs Shiv, Fat Boy Sars, Onry, Taylor and Powell can pack their bags for England. Everybody else, including Ganga, needs to wait. Bravo could probably hold an overnight bag.

But to me it was just last week we were lamenting the Partridge Report? Bemoaning the fact that we were now receiving confirmation of much that we had already either suspected or surmised. Sarwan will lead this team alright, in consumption of KFC / Pepsi / Johnny Black.

We said that Lara was leading the WI under-25 team that we are assembling to ruin and despair because of his bad attitude towards training and preparation. yet I hear people now VEX because WICB wants the next WI captain to be disciplined and fit?

99% of the people here have been crying for more discipline and fitness from teh players. Only a selected few unionists have been crying that the players are disciplined.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Cameron Apr 23, 2007, 9:53:14 PM

In reply to bobby
I am one who would like to see Sarwan get the opportunity to lead the West Indies. But I am wondering
why is it that the new criteria are seen as a means of disqualifying Sarwan. I think many on this MB are doing a disservice to Sarwan by making the argument that somehow these criteria are a means of disqualifying him. If it is self-evident that Sarwan does not meet those criteria, then it seems to me that he does not deserve to be captain.

bobby Apr 24, 2007, 3:50:00 AM

In reply to Cameron
That's exactly the point I was making. He does NOT deserve to be Captain. But why not just say so? Why are they beating around the bush? This ame WICB destroyed him by appointing him Vice Captain before he was mature enough. But you will remember, this was a compromise deal to get rid of Hooper.
Since then Sars has become arrogant and fat and has a serious drinking problem. I asked the Guyanese here weeks ago to give us the details on why he was thrown out of the popular Hotel Bar on Middle Street in GT.

Hendra Apr 24, 2007, 4:51:11 AM

If we are to turn over a new leaf, if it is not to be business as usual then Ganga is the best pic for skipper. Posters who are pushing the Sarwan line are not looking at the interest of WI cricket but just pushing the interest of their favourite or their homeboy.....insularity continuing to rear its ugly head.

In any event, whoever is chosen as capt. some people will copmlain. I have said it before, we must bite the bullet if our cricket is to go forward....... and our dismal performance at the WC may well be a blessing in disguise - when our cricket history is rewritten....on condition that we seize the time!!!!

anandgb Apr 24, 2007, 4:59:52 AM

In reply to Cameron If as you say, there is no problem, why teh fact are they delaying?

Do you not see the ulterior moves? It has nothing to do with Sarwan ability to lead.

anandgb Apr 24, 2007, 5:01:18 AM

In reply to Hendra So you do not see a problem being created where teh best batsman in the team is once againg jerked around?

Mek Ganga earn his place in teh team first, then come back with teh shyte argument.

What exactly has Ganga done to prove that he is a superior leader?

anandgb Apr 24, 2007, 5:04:29 AM

In reply to bobby So the fact that he was laid up with a broken foot for 4 months had nothing to do with his weight gain?

Listen I agree that as a professional he needs to maintain his body in a fit condition at all times.

Arrogance is but a sign of success and supreme confidence in onself. Do not knock it. He may be arrogant, but he behaves in a humble manner when he talks to his players and the public.

msdynamite Apr 24, 2007, 6:07:28 AM

Yes Ronnie looks somewhat unfit, but he had a couple of good knocks in the World Cup, has been VC and more than likely his extra weight is as a result of not being able to get back in shape quickly because of his injury; so why not give him a chance as captain this summer on a temporary basis with permanency subject to his and the team's performance? If Ganga is such a worthy contender for captaincy in the long term, pick him for the summer tour and see how he performs; if he does well with the bat then we'll have the option of promoting him (should Sarwan not do well as cappo).

Is this some monarchy? Does Sarwan or anybody else have some inheritance to some throne? The best man for the position should get it. If it's Sarwan then so be it. But he should not get it becos he was vice.
This new period in Caribbean cricket is going to be both crucial and historic. You need someone with strong leadership skills, someone with vision. One of his biggest obstacles will be some of the current lazy, indisciplined seniors on the team, Gayle, Samuels, Bravo, Collimore to name a few. Sarwan is part of this group and in my opinion should not be captain at this time. We need a strong, no bull-shit type captain who is not afraid to kick-ass and kick those lazy, good-for-nuttin SOB's off the team if they won't shape-up. We're sick of their underperforming, underachieving mediocrity. Notice I did NOT say untalented but I should have included spoilt rotten, weak, yellow-bellied......
