commentary by MARTIN WILLIAMSON

It's hardly a secret that West Indies cricket is in a far from healthy state. The national side continues in a gradual decline that dates back to the early 1990s, the domestic game is battling for survival in an increasingly Amercianised region, and the Caribbean has hosted a World Cup which, through not fault of its own people, looks like being remembered for all the wrong reasons.

Against this backdrop, the relationship between the board and its national players, never strong, is threatening to plunge to an all-time low. Over the last couple of years, barely a month has gone by without headlines of contractual disputes or rumours of strikes. But on the eve of the side setting off on a tour of England, the situation is rapidly deteriorating. At the moment, it seems inconceivable that the tour might not start on time, but the board's conduct in recent weeks has left the players deeply unhappy. Full Story

It is difficult to edit journalists articles for accuracy... best not to post it at all if it is inaccurate

"Early in 2006, the WICB agreed to tour England between May and July 2007. All correspondence at that time between boards made clear that this was outside the FTP, and a senior WICB official party to the negotiations has confirmed that. At a series of meetings between the WICB and WIPA, the most recent being on January 5, 2007, this was acknowledged by both sides."

What kind of rass WIPA leftist Afro-Leninist propaganda is this? Ramnarine paying this MARTIN WILLIAMSON fella or something?

Ah mean our top WI cricket journalists Tony Cozier and Becca don't see nutting wrong with what WICB doing. So wWho de hell is did Englishman to come try and criticize our beloved WICB who have done so much to improve WI cricket?

Away with this foreign interference in national matters!

" But on March 8, Ken Gordon, the WICB chairman, seemingly acknowledged the need to tie up the loose ends regarding the England tour when he wrote to Tony Deyal, the board's corporate manager. "It is most important that we be punctilious in observing not only the letter of our agreement with WIPA but also the spirit of our agreement." Sadly, what followed reflected neither."

Just who the hell is making the final decisions in the WICB? Is Gordon in charge or not? And if not him, who is?

Well Marty got his middle stump knocked clean out of di park during the last WICB KO so he's way more careful this time around.

The problem for the WICB is there's a paper trail and even ICC can't save dem.

I don't understand how the board even thinks they have a case.

But, Martin is right... this is a very high risk approach they are taking and it has every chance of backfiring on them.

In reply to Arawak The board is playing mind games.

They have succeeded in facting up the players enough to screw with their heads and they do not understand what they are doing.

There are some real jacka$$e$ in charge of finance and contracts is all I can say.

Maybe Dcbreds and myself should offer to go teach them about financial management.

We will include a few posters here to teach them contract law. I am not sure if I will take carib though becasue he may give away the bacon to the WICB.

Yuh mean we putting down we knives against each other for the "bettament" of WI cricket? lol I eh sure I like that deal. lol

But KG on the right track WRT financial management. Unfortunately, he does not understand that this is not a corporation and cannot use ALL of the philosophies. He has gotten rid of some dead weight (which is very good) and has gotten BETTER (not total) control of financial management (which is good and getting better). I am also satisfied with his efforts to place more power in the hands of the President.

However, his marketing capability is still to be assessed (he has done nothing here yet) and his relations with stakeholders are poor. And I believe that his failure in these two areas will cause him to be judged as a poor manager (fairly or unfairly).
