Middle order batsman Marlon Samuels has been axed from the 15-man West Indies squad picked for the upcoming Test series against England.
The squad, which is largely predictable, marks the return of Ravi Rampaul and a belated pick for all-rounder Darren Sammy. The selectors did not pick a specialist spinner or a back-up wicket-keeper.

severe warning.....
in days and weeks to come, leather face, greenidge and sarwan will face the wrath of wally on this board...
so edwards is we shock bowler ?
In reply to Admin
So what was the reason for axing Samuels as you said
Cuz he run out Lara.
![]()
When was the last time he played test cricket anyway?
did the folks who announced the squad give reasons for selection or non selection ?
In reply to CaribbeanCricket.com
I have two basic problems with this team. First, I still cannot see why the West Indies insists on ignoring the need for a specialist spinner. I refuse to believe that a spinner does not rank among the top 6 bowlers in the West Indies. Second, and especially in the absence of a spinner, I do not understand how Collins cannot get into this team. The variety provided by a left arm bowler who can swing the ball will be missed.
We are left with a one dimensional bowling attack varying from slow to fast, but nothing else. I would have picked Hinds (R) before Joseph.
Spinning options missings
No spinners like Mohammed, Jaggernath.....nor part timers like allrounder Ryan Hinds and Narsingh Deonarine
WICB should make an official announcement......that no spinner would ever be picked for a West Indies team again.....so all youngsters would know where they stand...and choose accordingly
Deonarine should have been included instead of Edwards.
In reply to carl0002
man made an elegantly brutal 1/2 ton and get dropped...leather face, greenidge and sarwan, get ready.
In reply to Wally-1
Why, because yu bwoy not in the team?? Good riddance!
Can the WICB send a 16 man squad and include a spinner ?
ent we have $$ now
In reply to Admin
Just as long as you don't involve meh grandmooma...
In reply to Narper
ent?
In reply to Narper
For once I have to agree with you. It's that sort of archaic thinking by the WICB that has West Indies scraping the bottom of the barrel.
I counted 14 people in that squad.
Who is the missing person????????????
Never mind, I see Rampaul name at the bottom.

I think Samuels is a lock to make the ODI team. We need firepower and with Matrix out for sure and Pullhard a long-term project, Samuels should have no problems making the ODI team.
With all the talk about suprises and having to change the culture around the team I was expecting us to at least be taking at least one or two who havent already represented the region along to blood.
and whats with the one wicketkeeper thing? I know English tours aint as long as they used to be but still we could use a backup sometime.
In reply to Wally-1
Ole Leatherface deliberately asked for Samuels to be dropped cuz of the beat dung dat Samuels put on Lara and the rest of The Trinis     . Then he had the audacity to run out Lara in his last game and did not fall on his knees and beg for Lara's forgiveness.
When ole leatherface asked for achanges in selection, who you tink he wuz talking bout.

In reply to greypatch MAybe it's too early in the English Summer for a mediocre spinner to be effective
where are narsingh and Chattergoon?? I thought they were in.
In reply to carl0002
Who samuels does beat???
In reply to Wally-1
who is prophet ?
how many games has helegance played for WI and played well
In reply to Admin Methinks your header is misleading.
Samuels was not part of the test team when they last played test cricket so he was not axed. The headline should have been Rampaul and Joseph back,Sammy included(Memba mih primary school teacher???)
While a spinner would be useful, this is one tour where it can be argued that a spinner may not get much help from the pitches..
The Test matches are in May and early June and some are in the North of England...
What would be the playing XI for the first test from this squad..
My XI in batting order, I'd play Gayle in the middle order since he may have difficulty with the moving ball at the beginning of the innings.
Smith
Ganga
Sarwan
Chanderpaul
Gayle
Morton
Sammy
Ramdin
Rampaul
Taylor
Powell
good thine we have we world class fast bowlers den
In reply to defeyeant
It appears that the big changes they were all calling for and talking about was only about extracting revenge on 1 player for Lara's retirement. I thought I was going to see a few more players and the selection committee being a bit imaginative. I was not aware that Samuels was such a big part of the team that he being left out is reffered to as big changes.

I think the biggest news of this team is the selection of Sylvester Joseph.
He is seen by many as the best captain in the region but has struggled mightily with the bat.
There is no way that he made this team on his batting alone.Any excuse and he is the captain
In reply to carl0002
bad mistake not taking deonarine who could spin also
In reply to Wally-1 Advantage of having Roberts on the selection panel; last time Joseph played for WI, Viv was convenor of selectors. What does that say.
In reply to Dukes
So why pick 2 underachievers with the hope that they somehow will magically catch afire with the bat while nurturing their undeniably good leadership qualities?
To me that is sending a strong message to Sarwan to say,"We will give you the captaincy, you WILL fcuk up and then we have no choice but to hand it to Ganga or Joseph."
"And oh, look, BTW, they have played in England in '07, so don't bellyache they deserve a chance now since they played on the team this year"

By the way, where the fact WI going wid Ravi Rampaul, they think this is dungheap cricket.
hold on Mrs Samuel is on the phone "Marlon is not home but he leaves a message for for you, it reads - its NOT CLEAR why they did not select me in the team"
1. What message are u sending to Ramdin when u do not select another keeper.
2. Where is the variety in the Bowling attack....No Pedro Collins(left arm bowlers have been doing well in international cricket).....no spinner, when it is known that England are terrible against spin.........
Darren Sammy cannot bat well enough or bowl well enough to make a test team. He is a natural replacement for bradshaw in the one day team.
Cant recall Joseph scoring too many runs in recent time. How did he get in there.
I think that Slo Mo would have been a better bet than Sammy and he could really confuse the Englishmen.
With Samuels remaining at home, I would think that a batsman who can bat (Deonarine, Hinds) would be a good replacement.
Wasnt Pedro Collins the top pacer in the recent Busta cup series? Would the English spring not provide favorable conditions for him?
Well I guess that the selectors know what they are doing. I really hope so
In reply to Cameron
Perhaps Gayle with this offspin will evolve into the next great part time spinner for us. I see him taking 10 wickets in a maych and getting a ton. DOnt you see that...LOL
In reply to Baje
Anybody with sense can see this....even if you say Samuels is shit to not pick from RHinds and Deonarine is simply ridiculous.
I hope as captain, Sarwan takes this opportunity to bowl more often. From what I've seen, he can disturb the best batsmen with his leggies. Ole skunt lara never knew how to use his bowlers.
I was wiling to give Helegance another chance, even though he shit up the place in the WC. But then agen, who didnt' shit up de place?
Glad to see RSM back in his rightful place. He always performs well in the English conditions, so look out for him this tour.
BTW, what ever happen to the "rebuilding" and "surprise" anouncements comeing from Factory Road?
Really would have liked to see Deonarine in the squad. He's probably the most underated batting ALLROUNDER in teh region. Well, his time will come.
I don't see what Bouncing brings to the team, unless he's there to support Sarwan from a strategic standpoint.
The value of Deonarine is dat he is anodda Chanderpaul.Yuh gat fuh pry he out.He doan give he wicket away.Dat is de kind of player we need badly coming in #6.In addition he is a much better bowler than Gayle in test cricket.
where are the big surprises we were promised??
Oh, and why is Gayle in the squad, I thought Chrissy them said he was going to get his come-uppance for undermining Lara?
In reply to Dukes
What have you based those 2 assumptions on?

In reply to Nemesis
what are you actually trying to say? Please be coherent! phew.
I do not know what to say, think or assume anymore about the selectors mentality. I have requested that they be fired and here they have confirmed my request even more. Gayle, Morton and Edwards have done nothing to deserve their selection in this team. There replacement should have been anyone of these guys Jaggernauth, Mohammed, Deonarine, Ryan Hinds, Lawson and Simmons. What has Simmons done wrong to be dropped from the team? The spinners have been the leading wicket takers in the region and in the world yet the WASTE INDIES SELECTORS cannot come to terms to include one in the squad. This is nothing but plain discrimination!
In reply to zimzimma
Phew off
can u read or brain a stutter?
In reply to zimzimma not to spend u freak, mohamad should have been included for joseph he can also bat more than him any how
In reply to bird
huh?
a trying to locate where the "Gordon" said something to the effect that the squad would reflect players that would grow and have the right attitude. So no spinner should be allowed to grow. BULLSHYT!!!
how come nobody nuh put a vote in fah lawson. what is his position? is either him legal or not. if him legal, play him. if him not, say so.
Question...who is the vice captain then?
Ganga? To put more pressure on Sarwan?
Or someone he gets along with like Gayle?
Is there any word out there on this???
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
what a 'team' ... now if Lara was a different kinda fella he woulda been saying:

In reply to Baje
With Samuels remaining at home, I would think that a batsman who can bat (Deonarine, Hinds) would be a good replacement.
baje, you have a cricket brain, happy that people like you are still out there...you're better than the selectors.
In reply to Wally-1 Well the selectors did not dissapoint once again. It is as I expected.
They will continue to do chupidness like this.
Why Is Samuels not in the team and Joseph is there?
Actually why is Deonarine is is more than a part time spinner and better batsman than Joseph not in the team?
Seems like they want a specialist ODI team but not sending the ODI people out?
Dwayne Smith would have been a suitable stand by wicket keeper and a specialist 12th man.
I am amazed. I expected Samuels and Simmons were out. But Joseph? The guy who failed miserable on his last outing to england against inferior opposition?
They must have a penchant for giving loooooooooooong rope.
Why haven't they identified a VC? Will they play games here too?
Loud Steupppppppppppps.
In reply to anandgb
So you really expected Gorgon GreenPig, Slidy Butthole and Angie Robbers to do better?
Is your fault, then, not theirs. I hope you learned your lesson.
For me the only surprise was no Samuels and no Jaggernauth, whom I would have picked over an obviously unfit & overweight Rampaul. I'm not sure when or how they expect him to get fit since there is only ONE practice game on the entire tour. He should be rounding into fitness by tour's end
.
I tell you west Indians are truly amusing.
Fidel is not really a surprise tour, since he being paid royally on his retainer contract, and has really done nothing all year. I guess they need a glorified net bowler/ waterboy
In reply to carib
Leave Ravi Roundball alone!!

In reply to redbaron
Is your fault, then, not theirs. I hope you learned your lesson.
Ha ha haha, one can hope for change everyday, no?
But seriously, these guys are pathetic.
In reply to carib Ravi is one of the hardest working pacer in teh team.
Boy I hope for your sake that you not 1 ounce overweight cuz it seem like you have something for fat boys.
No lawson? what gives?
Ganga will play in the middle order it looks like with smith partnering gayle at the top.
I fail to see what all the crying about Marlon "the Punk" Samuels is all about, I had previously called for him to be dropped permanently, then during the India home series and the Pakistan tour I too was fooled.
Still cannot understand why Denorine could not make this squad and certainly believe its a big mistake not to pick a spinner. Its beyond time to groom a spinner.
Collymore and Edwards are quota picks (to satisfy Bajans) these two do not warrent their selection. The WICB never fail to under deliver.
Wesley
finally sylvester joseph gets his shot!!!!!!!!!!
Sarwan pick a squad to lose in england
Ravi is one of the hardest working pacer in teh team.
=======================
The classic baseless assertion, based on no fact whatsover. The man was overweight at the END of the season, when he should have at least been approaching full fitness. How is that possible if he is the hardest working fast bowler?
What thse West Indians really need is something like An American fooball camp or better yet basic training.. A marine drill sergeant would have made SURE he has fit in 6 weeks :D
Good pick Rampaul is.
Not too sure about Rumdin
Overall poor squad.
No specialist spinner even though it is said England has a weakness in that area.
Unless Fidel has turned things around, I can't see where they going with him.
Joseph???????????? Let's wait and see.
Methinks dem give Sarwan basket fi carry water.
With all the recent talks about changes and looking to the future I am amazed that these selectors have included Sylvester Joseph and Fidel Edwards.
Joseph's spot should have gone to Doenarine and Edwards should be replaced by the seemingly forgotten Lawson.
I am not sure if Sarwan agreed to this team!!!
The only possible reason Joseph was picked was to take away the captaincy from Sarwan as soon as he lapse.
Marlon is away betta batsman than this prick(Joseph).
Sarwan is a skant to accept this squad

Welcome Newbie. See wid Wally - it's dat time of month
The selectors have obviously gone for young upcoming bowlers in their effort to rebuild:Taylor,Powell,Edwards and Rampaul will be all under the microscope to monitor their development. Its either tremendous success in wickettaking or endless licks by Peterson and crew.
In reply to carib
What thse West Indians really need is something like An American fooball camp or better yet basic training.. A marine drill sergeant would have made SURE he has fit in 6 weeks
You persist in making these stupid statements without regard for teh types of injuries these guys were suffering from.
Are you aware that some medications can force weight gain?
I suspect there is more behind your objections to Sarwan and Ravi that has nothing to do with weight gains. They both returned from injuries and gave credible performances. Actually Sarwan did better than every WI batsman.
The proof is in teh performance. Unfit performances huh?
Now will you just shut up already?
I still cannot understand the situation with Marlon and some of the views being expressed here. The first thing some people do is to point to his batting record (far from being the worst on the team) but yet he was expected to run himself out and further damage his record so that Lara could have his fairytale exit from test cricket. Then it is said that his attitude is bad but no one have pinpointed the bad attitude that he has displayed. It would seem to me that he and Lara never got along and for that he is paying the price.
Somebody with a fair mind who can express an objective view or share some facts please comment.
Hmmm...This is the close to the best teeam we can come up with at the moment. Only problem is, once again, failing to include a spinner. Most teams in test cricket have a good spinner or two. I would've liked to see jags or mo get an extended run over fidel. Don't knw why fidel is getting a free ride. Even though dave didn't get a lot of wickets he impressed with the bat and has excellent fc numbers. Oh well, more licks for pace like fyah.
Good riddance Marlon Samuels.
In reply to anandgb
It is people like you would enable these lazy skunts, who according to the COACHES REPORT don't train. The coaches are quite aware what medications they are on, and they don't give Sarwan or any of thse guys any excuses.
we will NEVEr make any progress in the WI team unless we call laziness for what is, instead of " protecting' our favored players with bogus excuses.
hmmm...lets see how this goes. dont look great
In reply to bugz Didn't he help pick um?
Spinner in the team is needed for WI players practice as they dont know how to play spinners.
Good riddance to Mr Shamuels ... WI doh need no big time skunt.
No spin and extra keeper is my problem here. Congrats to Rampaul, he will make us proud, watch and see.
In reply to faada LOL Who Undermind whom? Payback is a hard thing to bear.
I would have had Samuels, Collins & Jaggernauth in instead of Joseph, Sammy & Edwards.
In reply to Theo
I have to admit that Samuels' Test batting average of 28 doesn't exactly demand automatic selection. Add that to the ICC investigation into match-fixing, and unconfirmed reports of indiscipline, and I can understadn why he's not there!
But no spinner? that's insane! It's unusually warm in England now, and spinners are taking wickets in county cricket now. And no reserve keeper? What happens if Ramdin gets injured on the eve of a Test?
I can't support the inclusion of Rampaul and Edwards over Collins and Lawson. Edwards is wayward, and has a Test bowling average of 44. I'm sure it'll get worse! I can't see rampaul being a match-winner. Collins offers left-handed variety, and Lawson is tall and fast.
England are certainly not quaking while they read about our bowling attack! And how will MOrton play Monty? He's looked very vulnerable to spin....
In reply to mikesiva
think very hard and long and then answer these questions..
is samuels the only wi player ever been rumoured in match fixing?
was the rumour before the world cup and did he play in said wc?
In reply to carib
Stop talking shit man! Ravi is playing cricket in TnT and is performing well. Yes, he has put on some weight but in the gym. He is the only player coming in the team that has performed well after returning from injury.
I really see nothing wrong with the team if it is for tests only. I expect to see Pollard and Simmons return for the ODIs. Maybe a few new faces as well. Remember this is the test squad only.
In reply to mikesiva
In my earlier comments I've mentioned Lawson, however, if you look at the current set of fast bowlers in the region, Rampaul is one of the best if not the best. Taylor has not been performing of late and Powell has yet to prove he can make a difference in test cricket. My choice of bowlers would be Lawson, Rampaul, Collymore and Jaggernauth with either Bravo or Sammy as the fifth. My line up would be Smith, Simmons, Ganga, Chanderpaul, Sarwan, Bravo or Sammy, Ramdin, Rampaul, Jaggernauth, Lawson and Collymore.
Isn't Lawson still pelting?
Yes he is still pelting 3 out of 6, whereas most others only pelt 2 out of 6. LOL
In reply to mikesiva
u make absolute sense! Collins was definitely needed for variety, dave mohammed for spin and lawson if we believe he will not be called (mind u he only seems able to take wickets when he pelts...so if he could look to bowl them late in the day like his compatriot used to !1)..
the rumours flying around samuels are like scud missiles, but suffice to say his average and his attitude warrant an extended stay at home. He is by far our most talented batsman, but then so was hooper, but at least his average was in the mid 30s rather than samuels' pathetic 28.
Can anyone else in this squad keep? I'm assuming sylvester can as I see no other reason to carry him.
I always liked rampaul...lets hope his weight gain is not due to steroids or we'll be in more mire, if thats possible.
and as to the new CEO analson...what a wonderful way to start off a tour...u are not worth negotiating with...u shouldn't even get paid...forget any prior agreement...I'm in charge and if u don't like it f%$# off. He obviously took mangement lessons from the Kremlin!!
In reply to carib
He was overweight but not unfit as the Bajan Batsmen will testify.
Even more than that weight loss takes longer to take effect. Because of his injury situation he put on the weight but he was able to bowl with increasing efficiency throughout the season.
Edwards was dropped due to his lack of fitness and preparednes and form yet he makes the team that has to be the greatest traversty in selection. Lawson has been left out despite showing he is head and shoulders above all the other bowlers. About his throwing problems one captain once said in response to cries for the dropping of a bowler on his team that it is the Umpires role to call him. I find it hard to understand how he could have taken so many wickets while being called and still not be selected yet the long list of international cricketers who pelt is growing and laws are conmstantly adjusted for them yet we have a bowler who is marginal compared to them sits unselected. I agree with you on the point about Jaggernauth's exclusion but Samuels, please. There are equally valid reasons for dropping Bravo, Ganga and not including Morton and Joseph all are failure so far at test level. Their selection is disputable but no one has any advantage over the other. However, Sarwan will benefit by having more leaders on the team in the form of Ganga and Joseph.
