HEADLINE: Windies coach: It's a fresh start

CaribbeanCricket.com May 8, 2007, 4:55:59 AM

Newly appointed coach of the West Indies team David Moore says the team has to cultivate the will to prepare to do well.

"We have the will to do well but we have to have the will to prepare to do well, we need to prepare ourselves to compete consistently well at the highest level," said the 42 year old Australian who is taking over from resigned head coach Bennett King.

HE is saying all the right things, but I wonder how redbaron and his crew will feel about this continued reference to Collymore as the key bowler - and with Rampaul and Bravo in the team at that. I mean how can Walsh, Lara and all these cricketing officials keep referring to Collymore like this when knowledgeable people like Reddy and Wesley think otherwise, dont they read CC?????

In reply to armchair Collymore is Economical! That should count for something.. But he needs to use his head and take wickets.

'"We do not have a lot of time, but we do have one warm up game and we have to utilize the time effectively and get into the rhythm of Test cricket again," said the former wicketkeeper who played one game for Australian state side New South Wales.'

1) Only one warm-up match? When Pakistan toured england last summer, they played THREE warm-up matches!

2) Moore has only played ONE first-class game. Not the most experienced pro around, then....

Fortis May 8, 2007, 7:25:46 AM

You can't have a fresh start with stale players. No real changes have been made apart from leaving out Samuels. Again, this is a VERY WEAK Windies squad loaded with FAILED recycled players that will be slaughtered in England. To add insult to injury, the coach is not even a first line coach, but a reserve who has no success record to show. All the ingredients for failure have been combined very well by a hapless WICB and its equally inept selectors!!

Look, we have a new captain, all is well.

As long as this selected/blessed/lucky group can become a team I will consider it progress. I am not going to single out any one player. New Zealand for years was not known to have any stars and yet they have consistently made it to the semis over the past 3 world cups and maintained respect from all opponents. Why? They are a fantastic team. I will settle for a good team at this point and I wish them well regardless of how little credence I give to the WICB at this time.

New Zealand recently had very good players in their teams such as Chris Cairns, Daniel Vettori, Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle, Chris Harris and one exceptional one in Shane Bond. West Indies have not had the same amount of quality players in the same team since the retirement of Walsh and Ambrose.

I agree with you that the Kiwis play as a team, which makes sense for any team sport.

Bear in mind though that NZ is made up of two islands; north and south, with significantly less potential for the insularity that plagues Windies cricket. Additionally, the NZ board comprises individuals who not only know the game but behave consistently responsible and professional in dealing with the players and people of NZ.

Like most West Indians, I want the best for our cricket, but those in charge seems to lack the capability to assure such.

I have to agree with you about the prospects of the team.

With Lara, at least we had a wrap-around tail but without him this team must set some sort of record with having the longest tail in test cricket-from 1 to 11-with perhaps Sarwan, Shiv & Gayle providing a modicum of resistance.

This is likely the weakest WI team ever to leave our shores!!

I disagree regarding the comparative quality of players. On the one hand everyone here agrees that the systems in the West Indies are sub par and the organisation leaves alot to be desired. We se young players coming out positively but not being able to transition and then put all the blame on the players. Is that fair. I have my level of frustration with the players and their work ethic, but how many acheivers come out of very poor systems - take education as an example. Yes the brilliant may shine through and the extremely determined, but most are neither brilliant or extremely determined. Even Sir Garry had his benefactors who provided him support and took him out of communities that could get him only so far and gave him an opportunity to develop. County cricket did this for many of our past achievers. Do we have this now?

So it is not the players who are mediocre, but the systems they are in and yes the attitudes and habits they have developed. So completely changing one set for another will have little effect as we saw when the first 11 declined to tour Sri Lanka and another group went. For all the talk about spirited performance, they were outclassed.

So unless the motivation is to see some favored player get his paycheck because he is not much different (in the individuals opinion) from others selected, what is the point?

Corey Collymore is a good bowler no matter what people say here on a message board.

That said, when this good bowler has a Test strike rate of 1 wicket every 11 overs bowled, it doesn't exactly refute the claims that he is anything more than average. I mean, a bowler's primary objective is to out people. If Collymore is the best bowler on the WI team, it speaks volumes about the lack of quality we have in our bowling attack.

Isn't this the same guy who was until recently (or maybe still is) in the top 10 in test cricket? Yes he is not a world beater, but the comments about him on this MB are disingenuous.

fresh start in 2 aspects, but same old players, board and selectors..

with the same selection policy.

the only foundation of expecting better results lie in hope

I do not disagree about our lack of meaningful cricket setup, my point is that NZ in the last 10 years produced more productive or superior cricketers but that does not mean that their players were more talented, NZ was able to mold probably less talented individuals into a competitive team whilst due to a lack of any process or procedure in the Caribbean, physical talent is not harnessed and blended with the requisite mental processes to produce a competitive team.

In reply to armchair I don't understand your issue with Collymore But I have heard guys like Taylor speak about how helpful Collymore is to him and other bowlers. Being economical is good in itself but the value he will add to newbies like Rampaul and Sammy will not be obvious.

Conclusion: Collymore is the leader of the Bowling Pack and all in that group need to understand that line of authority.
