HEADLINE: Gabriel charged by ICC after Root altercation

CaribbeanCricket.com Feb 12, 2019, 11:20:21 AM

West Indies fast-bowler Shannon Gabriel has been charged by the ICC in relation to an incident on day three of the third Test in St Lucia.

After an exchange with Gabriel while he was batting, England captain Joe Root was overheard on the stump microphone saying: "Don't use it as an insult. There's nothing wrong with being gay." The video clip has been doing the rounds on social media since although what had drawn that response from Root was not picked up by the stump microphone.

It had initially appeared that the umpires had dealt with the issue at the time - West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite swiftly moved Gabriel away from Root after the exchange - and match referee Jeff Crowe was thought to be satisfied that it had been dealt with.

I think Root won that exchange.

Big dunce homophobic skunt.
Why mention it? Root married. Weird thing to say when on the receiving end of a master class from root. Call him ugly, lucky, a skunt even. But gay?? Makes no sense. Shows a complete lack of class.

Emir Feb 12, 2019, 11:27:01 AM

Do any of us know what Gabriel said?

In addition, there are grounds for strong appeal here and I hope CWI fight for Gabriel.

We don't want Gabriel or any of our players getting penalized for cultural differences. The LGBTQI movement in both societies are very different and West Indian jokes with its picong is different from the British.

This is going to be very interesting to see if CWI support our players or leave them at the hands of British mores.

Oilah Feb 12, 2019, 11:28:13 AM

The gay insult has lost a lot of its sting and acceptability rolleyes

Suppose if root came back and called Shannon a black so and so...

Larr Pullo Feb 12, 2019, 11:31:56 AM

So Root did rat him out...

^This.

NO ONE heard Gabriel say anything. This is like when you say, "what did you say about my momma?" to start a fight. Now bystanders would think your would be adversary said something derogatory about your momma, when in actuality no such think occured.

This is The Royal Nonesuch of sledging wars... smile smile smile

Khaga Feb 12, 2019, 11:38:16 AM

Would be interesting to see if Gabriel pleads guilty during the hearing with the match referee..

Banner Feb 12, 2019, 11:38:37 AM

In reply to Larr Pullo

You think he’ll plead guilty to the remark?

Larr Pullo Feb 12, 2019, 11:39:43 AM

In reply to Banner

He shouldn't!! There's no evidence of him saying anything of that nature to Root.

Although the mics did not catch Gabriel's earlier comments, it is understood the umpires spoke to him about them at the time. No action was taken initially,

NO ONE heard Gabriel say anything.

You believe that they are going to charge him with an offense based on what Root responded with?

Stop chat nonsense. You have more sense than that.

That's what I been saying all along. What did Gabriel say. We always got these people telling us how to react.
Doubt he would of said anything if he was in say Australia.

Hell anyone call me gay wouldn't get a response from me, well maybe ask you Modda

doosra Feb 12, 2019, 1:29:46 PM

Ewart Feb 12, 2019, 4:35:49 PM

In reply to Larr Pullo

Whatever he said, I am sure he did not use the word "gay".

It would have been something else. Something that Root understood.

CWI need to sign up Gabriel in Sunday School. Fella always getting into trouble on the field. Stares, elbows, insults, etc. Never a dull moment with him around! smile

I yearn for the days, when players had a gay time having a good sledge

Chrissy Feb 12, 2019, 11:16:42 PM

I remember when folks here had no problem with McGrath using it against Sarwan. Some (including the OZ PM) went after Ronnie for his response.

"Battyman" is a very common insult used in England these days....

When Stokes got into his brawl with two English thugs in Bristol, it was after they'd called a couple of gay guys "battyman".

It was alleged that Stokes also ridiculed the gay couple, but the prosecution were unable to prove that.

More here

'Shannon Gabriel could be banned for two Tests after allegedly using the derogatory phrase 'b**** boy' during his on-field spat with Joe Root.'

Logic Feb 13, 2019, 1:24:12 AM

Appears that Root wanted to put the alleged intended insult on record. His response was strangely stilted and detailed. Seemed unnatural.

Tryangle Feb 13, 2019, 3:24:56 AM

In reply to Logic

The umpires likely would have heard the initial exchange regardless of what the stump mic caught or whatever Root said to the media. Don't see how Root is in any way or form a culprit in this particular situation.

Come on now, it seems you didn't get the memo: They decide what is acceptable and whatever they do, it is fine.

Let us see if the venal CWI is going to fight for Gabriel.

They cannot use British mores against a WI player in the WI for an alleged crime that is not a social crime in the WI.

Colonialism is over.

They have already bossed the CWI in deciding what venues they wanted, the tour dates and all the other logistics was decided by them.

Tryangle Feb 13, 2019, 3:44:33 AM

In reply to Emir

But this isn't about what's acceptable language in the WI, ICC has their own mandates as a global sporting body, which covers speech that's deemed sexist, homophobic, racist, etc.

If CWI is going to appeal on Gabriel's behalf, it can't be on "we say it all the time". It has to be, as the unnamed WI player suggested to DailyMail, along the lines of misinterpretation, eg "little man".

Emir Feb 13, 2019, 4:02:35 AM

In reply to Tryangle

And "their own" is Euro-centric or in this case it follows British mores (it not just cricket- at global bodies these nations have been pushing the rest of the world to adopt their standards)

In this case, it is not clear cut what was said and how it was interpreted.

If CWI is going to appeal on Gabriel's behalf, it can't be on "we say it all the time".

Nobody is making this claim.

Pacy Feb 13, 2019, 5:10:12 AM

Gabriel suspended for 4 ODIs... is swearing at someone such a grave mistake? I had seen many verbal altercations but do not remember someone getting 4 match suspension

Banner Feb 13, 2019, 5:11:53 AM

In reply to Pacy

Don’t call him a batty man then. He one ignorant Dumb skunt.

Khaga Feb 13, 2019, 5:22:13 AM

Gabriel, who pleaded guilty to the offence, was fined 75% of his match fee and received three demerit points, pushing him over the threshold for a ban.

Gabriel was charged with a Level Two offence under article 2.13 of the ICC's Code of Conduct, covering "personal abuse". There was no formal hearing with the match referee, Jeff Crowe, after he accepted the charge.

So that is the ‘word’ that attracts 4 match ban. Just a month back a clear racist statement recorded attracted a 2 ODI ban. Lovely

Maispwi Feb 13, 2019, 5:36:58 AM

In the interest of transparency and to avoid all the conspiracy theories, or at least some, the ICC shud publish player demerit points in the same way dey do player rankings. In that way everyone will know how close to de edge de players are

Banner Feb 13, 2019, 5:39:35 AM

In reply to Pacy

How about not just saying it. How about that.

In arriving at just punishment a judge does not only look at the offence, they take other things like remorse, first offender or repeat offender into consideration. Maybe the racist guy who got a 2 ODI ban was a firstie ...

Tryangle Feb 13, 2019, 7:58:45 AM

I do agree it may be interesting to see in depth the comparison with that fella with the racist remark, and Kay likely already has the explanation regarding accumulated points, etc.

Emir I don't disagree with it leaning to a Euro-centric world view. That is where the money and influence has historically been. If a global sport emerges where the base of power is that of Asia or Africa or Latin America maybe there will be player conduct policies that differ from other sports.

Please read the Press Release. He did not get a suspension or 4 ODIs for this infraction alone. He had previous infractions.

On Wednesday, the 30-year-old Gabriel accepted the charge brought by the International Cricket Council.

The charge means Gabriel has accrued eight demerit points -- cricket's disciplinary penalty system -- in a two-year period, leading to a four-match one-day international ban.
