HEADLINE: WI can move forward without Gayle – Wallace

CaribbeanCricket.com Mar 7, 2020, 9:21:18 PM

Former West Indies opening batsman Philo Wallace says the West Indies can do without the services of Chris Gayle after seeing the regional side coast to victory in their series against Sri Lanka yesterday.

The opening batsman Gayle has not played a T20 match for the West Indies since March 8, 2019, versus England, but since then, the return of Lendl Simmons, the consistency of Evin Lewis and the emergence of Brandon King has worked for the Windies.

“Gayle is 40 years old now, he doesn’t move around as swiftly as he used to and I think there is enough depth now in the team that they can move forward without a Chris Gayle,” said Wallace who was speaking on a local radio show, the Calvin Alkins Delivery of the Day with Barry Wilkinson, in Barbados.

I agree!

Im of the same opinion some time now. His immobility and inconsistency with the bat are clear facts to this issue.

Halliwell Mar 9, 2020, 9:26:04 AM

Gayle vs King

King is younger and is the better fielder
Gayle the more consistent bat and would make teams alter their plans, especially their leg and left arm spinners?

Good as he was we can't keep hanging onto Gayle

Wait until those pretenders start to lose form, then they will be calling for the universal boss once more.

A bunch of hypocrites.

International t20 has moved on. 4's and 6's don't automatically win you games. Outfield abilities is a key factor. Running 1's and 3's to turn over the strike in a left hand right hand combo is pivotal. The likes of Carlos Braithwaite hitting 4 6's in the last over in a match to win a tournament may never happen again.

Smashing opening bowlers for 4s and 6s in the 1st 6 overs power play can take the game away from most teams...

International t20 has moved on

No choice....because there are no 6 hitters like Gayle and Russell anymore

Gayle moves the same way he has moved all his playing life....now dem want him to sprint to be selected

A man standing there at a batting crease hitting 4's and 6's at will don't happen so consistently. If him in the zone..yes it will happen.
Has Chris Gayle ever won a finals with his blade?

And for that reason you wont pick him for a whole tournament...look chap..it's Gayle and 10 others

I know he won $20 million dollars for his WI team with his blade against England..more than they won in any tournament to date

Halliwell Mar 9, 2020, 12:42:08 PM

In reply to Narper

By that reasoning then the side for the World cup is Marlon and Carlos. Only lol

BTW....Carlos fluked....all stars were aligned....happens every 1000 years big grin

Raggs Mar 9, 2020, 1:04:44 PM

I would pick Brandon King over Chris Gayle at this present moment.
Simmonds/ Lewis then King.

Why not, the gravy train is still accepting passengers. At 40 he will not need to pass any yo yo or other fitness tests in line with members of the current squad.... smile

It was rumored that something happened in a parking lot back in the day at a final

I accept your "gravy train" justification.

big grin

jen Mar 10, 2020, 3:15:26 PM

When yo at 40, you gotta be scoring above your peers in order to get picked. Gayle has been very inconsistent, although still playing some monstrous knock in between.

Only how I see gayle making it is he have to mash up IPL and CPL real bad.

Why not, the gravy train is still accepting passengers.

The last T20 World Cup we were forced to play 10 versus 11, and still won despite one notable passenger who rode said gravy train contributing a grand total of 8 runs and 1 wicket for the entire tournament!!

I am sure a 40 year old Gayle, even on one leg, can't do much worse!

PRECEDENT HAS BEEN SET!!

Halliwell Mar 10, 2020, 4:38:34 PM

That’s all we asking
Pick the man if he bats well and fields average in The CPL / IPL

Do we need that again. This time we may not be so lucky.
