HEADLINE: Veersammy Permaul disappointed with his non-selection

CaribbeanCricket.com Jun 5, 2020, 11:57:51 AM

The 2020 season was aborted with two matches remaining due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 Pandemic and this was the third time Permaul has captured 50 or more wickets in a single season.

Three Guyanese were selected in a 30-man squad for possible selection but batsman Shimron Hetmyer and fast bowling all-rounder Kemo Paul opted out due to safety reasons. Trinidadian batsman Daren Bravo also made himself unavailable.

“I never told anyone that I was not available for the England tour so I take it that I was just not picked. Of course I am disappointed but my selection is not in my hands and all I can do is to continue to take wickets if I play for Guyana” Permaul said yesterday.

“I always say to myself ‘I will get back when God wants me there; God is my only hope,” said the 30-year-old from Albion, Berbice. Chairman of the CWI Selectors, Guyanese Roger Harper had said during a Radio interview before the 30-man squad was picked:“He (Permaul) has certainly put his hands up again, in a big way. You know, taking 50 wickets in the eight matches, he has really put his hands up, and of course he would be seriously considered.”

A travesty against Permaul. If he cannot make the team at 30 after a season in which he was top regional wicket taker, he should either settle for regional honors, or quit the game.

It is even worse that Warrican was selected ahead of Permaul.

Guyana, and the region, have practically lost Motie already, and may now lose Permaul, because of selectors.

Permaul I know you are disappointed, Miller was there every season too as leading wicket-taker but never get the call up. However, work on your batting for if you could perform consistently with the bat and with your bowling, you will definitely be an asset to any West Indies team. Keep working hard, never give up!

Third time this bowler has captured 50 wickets or more in a season and yet he is overlooked.

There must be a reason why he was overlooked because his omission makes no sense at all. Same goes for Kieron Powell.

You called back Blackwood based on performance and included Chemar Holder based on performance but excluded Permaul and Powell based on over performance. That is the only conclusion anyone who knows anything about cricket can draw because those two guys performed better than any of the other guys selected.

Maybe they failed the fitness test and everyone else passed. If that is not the case then I am calling on the people who selected this team to give up the selector's gig because you all are a bunch of fools.

dayne Jun 6, 2020, 8:54:12 AM

In reply to Star

The Selectors could be reasoning that Powell and Permaul are just good regional players like Devon Smith, I do not agree with the omission of Permual, but Warrican have better Test numbers than Permaul, so the Selectors could get away with selecting him over Permaul. However the England tour could be a career decider for some players who I think are not convincing Test players yet.

Star Jun 6, 2020, 9:07:00 AM

In reply to dayne
I can understand your point of view but if the criteria for selection is no longer performance in the regional competition, then scrap the competition. Done away with it and save CWI that money.

There is no logical explanation for omitting a left arm spinner who just took 50 wickets in your regional competition for another left arm spinner who only took 13 wickets in the same competition.

Something is wrong with that picture.

dayne Jun 6, 2020, 10:32:02 AM

In reply to Star

The 50 wickets to 13 wickets comparison is misleading, Warrican was away in India for the Test match against Afghanistan. so he missed some matches, also when he did play in the regionals, he rarely bowled because Chamar Holder, Roach and Harding were blowing teams away.

Dukes Jun 6, 2020, 10:31:58 PM

.Warrican then took 13 wickets in 6 matches at 23 apiece while Veerasammy took 50 wickets in 8 matches at 12 apiece.

What is MISLEADING about the above?

I listened to Jason Holder the other night on Instagram, he is no dummies.
He understand the game, the culture, leadership and history.
He cannot lead a new selection every series, and an inexperience Head coach is not the way to go.
He compared the Indian culture in cricket to the one in the region, where the junior player will sit and listen
Not the same for a youngster now making his way into the senior team.
He credit MS Dhoni as one of the best, he has seen.

The first live chat, he was asked about players he is very close to, a number of them played with and against him at the U19 level.
Players like Ambris, Hamilton, Blackwood.
He spoke about the partnership with Dowrich, a player he have known from his youth.

Did anybody consider that if Permaul was selected as a reserve, a plane would have to be chartered to go to Guyana and bring him to Barbados or Trinidad to join the other players and similarly when the team returns to the Caribbean a special charter to Guyana from either Trinidad or Barbados. Maybe that is why all the marginal selections went to Barbados.Maybe if Hetty and Keemo did not decline selection, Permaul could have gotten on to the reserves. Food for thought!!!

Preston McSween is from Grenada

He’s the only Grenadian in the squad. And he could be deemed a “marginal selection”

Assuming your assertion is accurate, CWI would have to charter a plane to bring him to Barbados and then back after the tour is complete.

So if They could do it for McSween, why not Permaul?

We are all speculating here but I suspect it is significantly cheaper to charter a flight from Grenada to Barbados than from Guyana to Barbados.

So you’re speculating it’s a matter of economics why Permaul wasn’t selected

I’ll speculate that it’s cheaper to charter a flight from Guyana to Trinidad where Permaul could travel on the same charter as the Trinis, than it is to charter a flight from Barbados to Grenada.

Im not convinced by your theory.

Squad: Jason Holder (Captain), Jermaine Blackwood, Nkrumah Bonner, Kraigg Brathwaite, Shamarh Brooks, John Campbell, Roston Chase, Rahkeem Cornwall, Shane Dowrich, Chemar Holder, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Raymon Reifer, Kemar Roach.

Reserves: Sunil Ambris, Joshua DaSilva, Shannon Gabriel, Keon Harding, Kyle Mayers, Preston McSween, Marquino Mindley, Shayne Moseley, Anderson Phillip, Oshane Thomas, Jomel Warrican.

The only spinner in the reserve is Warrican, who was part of the squad that played against Afghanistan.
One can ask if the reserve should have seven pacers?

I hear you. The only thing I have come up with is that Permaul is now deemed “been there and done that” in the eyes of the WI selectors.

He’ll have to do something to the equivalent of Devon Smith’s 1000 run 2017/1
2018 season, where he scored 6 centuries, to force them to select him. And even then, they played Devon in 2 tests against Bangladesh at home, he had 3 innings, with a highest score of 58, continued to be among the top performers in regional 4 day cricket, and then never selected him again.

So maybe that is Permaul’s fate.

Do I think Verasammy Permaul is an international world class spinner? I do not.

But if your stated selection policy is that a player MUST play and perform well in regional 4 day cricket to be eligible and earn selection to the test team, then players such as Devon and Permaul must always be in the mix

Here is de video.. he boarded just after Chemar and the other player look like Mayers..

I wrote the comment from the COS, who spoke about spinners bowling in England.
He spoke about turn, and is needed during dry summer, but it is the pacers, that is needed.
The Doc posted a number of spinners that got wickets in England, not saying if it was a dry or wet summer, that these wickets was taken..
These fans are not going after Roger Harper, who selected four spinners and about twelve pacers in his group of 25 players.

I am not surprise that another spinner was not included, because Roger Harper said on the Mason and Guests show, that spinners are needed during the dry season in England, pacers are more successful.
Dukes responded to that post by showing spinners taking wickets in England, he did not say, if though wickets was taken during the dry season.
Roger Harper had no intention of taking additional spinners, other than the three that played against Afghanistan.

Don’t think so. It probably coincided with the advent of T20 pro leagues which predated Holder’s appointment as captain.

The stipulation that a player HAD TO PLAY in the regional tournament To be eligible for selection went all the way back to Desmond Haynes. But West Indies were by and large locked out of English County cricket by then (even though dates didn’t really conflict), and there was no T20 in those times so there wasn’t any other option for players.

One could even say it went back to Packer days. WICB replaced the entire team once the Packer players went to Australia.

But this iteration of club vs ”country” conflict really only happened with the popularity of T20 pro leagues, and that was during Sammy’s tenure if I not mistaken

I am unaware of any cricketer scoring 300 in a day's play.
Now if you want to extrapolate from that statistic then one can well imagine that he could score quickly.

As a point of reference the most runs Brian Lara ever scored in a single day in a test match is 227.

If that’s their explanation, then Permaul could have taken 100 wickets in the tournament, he wasn’t going to get in ahead of Warrican. And Chase is regarded by the selectors as a front line spinner.

How does selecting Permaul instead of one of Harding,McSween,Mindley or Phillip represent chopping and changing since none of these four fast bowlers have ever been selected in a West Indies senior team.

You keep bringing up Lance Gibbs, but Lance is talking about spinners having the goods to bowl out test teams,I am talking about a spinner making a squad instead of one of 4 rookie fast bowlers.

Doc, the selectors had no intention of adding any additional spinner to the team.
I sense that from Harper's first interview on Mason and Guest, of which you listened to, via the Podcast.
The selection of so many reserve pacers, should show you the mindset of the selectors.
Roger Harper just dont believe, our spinners will make a difference on this tour, that the reason for the omission of Permaul.

You went to school longer than me, even though I had about 3-5 years of post secondary education.

Anyone looking at the reserve selection, know it make very little sense.
The reason for Warrican selection is, he was part of the last test squad, thats Harper's words
I had the opportunity to listened to a number of players live, the last few months.
What I can say, Phil and Jason do not want to chop and change players, they want to build a squad.

Going on numbers Permaul have a good argument for selection, however very few spinners are successful in England, even Test Teams that are dependent on spinners to get their wicket do not expect much from their spinners when they tour England, so Harper is being practical by selecting 6 fast bowlers for the 25 man squad.

Calm down, I mis-spoke, I should have said the reserve squad, that the issue most people are having, that Permaul was not even included in the reserve squad.
