Selecting Gayle is a backward step

allan 2021-02-23 17:45:33

Play the youngsters who are in form
Selecting this 41 year old is rubbish

I agree if Gayle is selected it would be a backward step, especially since there will be no spectators at the ground.

I thought the point of selectees was to select the best players available, why does the age of the player matters? Don’t forget Tom Brady is 43 but he just destroyed the 25 year old Mahomes.

I suspect that if the WT20 was held last year as intended, having Gayle in place for this series wouldn't make sense... but with the WT20 postponed, there's the likelihood that they want their strongest possible side in there to gel and prepare for another trophy run.

granite 2021-02-23 18:24:33

As much as we love Gayle and his achievements it's a backward step,it reminds me of Brian Close playing for England at over 40.It makes us look desperate, what for,we beat Bangladesh with a B team so what's the big deal.No offence to Mr.Gayle.

Why is there an obsession with age? What is your retirement age? If Gayle is still better than most of the younger lot what is the problem? I have watched every match in this Super 50 tournament and I have not seen one player, not one, who could find a place in any of the top teams - England, India, Australia or New Zealand.

Bad eyesight, slow reflexes, unable to run, injury prone

Ganga or should I refer to you as Barrackpore boy seeing as you do not want to give up your true identity..
Gayle bats in any position. Lewis at one time was challenging Gayle but him boy nah gats de guts for a good fight... weak like day old porridge..and yes Guyana got some 2 day old porridge’s that ain’t fit a bam bam.
I can help you name them Shetty and Paulus. Only Sheppie from midland and Hemraj putting dem hand up ... the rest of my fellow muddies ain’t fit a crap

Well evin lewis is the 2nd highest run getter in the tourbament. 200+ runs at a very healthy average of 47.

Raggs 2021-02-23 21:19:26

Chris Gayle should be nowhere near a windies squad.

b4u8me2 2021-02-23 21:20:29

How is it a backward step if you are looking to build a team to win the T20 world cup? You do not pick a team to rebuild and give experience when you are preparing for a World Cup. For a World Cup you pick your best players. Simple. If you are saying Gayle no longer merits selection based on performance then say that. But your argument cannot be based on age and picking a younger player for the future. The immediate future is to pick your best team to prepare for and win the World Cup.

No insult meant but I gonna expose you Mr Ganga...spell 3

Halliwell 2021-02-23 21:34:11

I endorse Chris’ selection
It is IN NO WAY a backward step

Why the angst anyway, remember this is ‘lickit’ and ‘not real cricket’
Gayle will MURDAH bowlers on those Indian pitches!

My mantra is that the best players should always be selected for any West Indies teams, regardless of age or island of origin. Hopefully we will never again make another The Shiv mistake in WI cricket, batsman after several years of been forced into retirement might still better than many in the current team.

Dreama 2021-02-23 23:39:38

Chris Gayle even with retardation of reflexes and ability to take quick singles, is still one of the first names on any West Indies team and any format. There isn't a single player that can displace him on merit.

FanAttick 2021-02-23 23:47:53

In 1992 WI decided to use the World Cup to blood new players and summarily dismissed senior players like IVA Richards(who to this day remains our finest ODI batsman)....the rest they say is history...
