HEADLINE: Saint Lucia franchise to be called the Kings

CaribbeanCricket.com 2021-08-02 12:49:39

The Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Saint Lucia franchise are to change their name from the Zouks to the Kings. The team is owned by K.P.H. Dream Cricket Private Limited who also run the Punjab Kings franchise at the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Saint Lucia Kings will share branding and other assets with their colleagues at the IPL as the ownership team moves to further cement ties between the two brands. This synergy will help build on the successes the team has had since the new owners arrived after they finished as runners-up at last year’s Hero CPL tournament.

The Kings will play their first match of this season against the Jamaica Tallawahs on Friday 27 August. The Kings side will be coached by Andy Flower and will have the likes of Faf du Plessis, Andre Fletcher, Rakheem Cornwall and Wahab Riaz in their ranks.

Commenting on the new brand identity Darren Sammy, Assistant Coach and Mentor, Saint Lucia Kings, said: “I love the logo and I love the new name. It’s a pleasure to be associated with the Kings Franchise and I truly hope that the name can inspire our players to play like the true Kings that we are!”

I thought the Jamaica franchise was Guyanese owned, and was genuinely looking forward to the name change to the Jamaica Muddies.

IPL ten ovaaaa

I guess the person who puts the money in the jukebox gets to choose the song everyone listens to.

I am not so sure this is the wisest move on the part of the owners though. The league is called the Caribbean Premier League.

Therefore, in my view, the owners should use its Caribbean uniqueness to to make it different from all the other T20 leagues around the world.

The Caribbean is known for excitement with music, dancing, beaches, cruises, carnivals etc. The T20 is also known for excitement with the number of sixes being hit and the antics of the crowd.

Putting the two together in terms of marketing should be quite simple so the owners may be missing a trick.

Problem is that we in the region are no longer the target market (and probably haven't been, for a couple years now) for views.

Look at who the primary broadcast sponsor is.

The main benefit for the existing franchises is that with the IPL muscle fully behind them, their league's presence in the sports calendar is locked in, no threat from any upstart franchise cricket leagues.

But looks like we're only a couple changes until CPL is officially IPL2, matches held in Dubai and Sharjah and the regional benefits such as having local WI youngsters and ICC Americas players get exposure get cut off.

A lot of companies make a big mistake when expanding into a different country. They forget they are in a different country. They do everything exactly the same as they do in their own country.

One of Fuzzy’s greatest fears appears to be reality.

Take comfort that the Barbados franchise didn’t have to adopt a different name cool

Spoken like the true (aspiring) politician you are.

You just made me think of something. What if a rich American bought the Mumbai Indians and changed the name to Mumbai Texans. Would the coaches and players embrace the name change?
