No Respect for WI!!

Hendra 2021-11-22 11:43:43

Just imagine, when W I had lost 4 wkts gor 80 odd runs, a Lankan commentator was asking whether SL should enforce the follow on.

Guess all other teams know that we lack pedigree in our batting to put it charitably.

Sad state of affairs. You can only get respect through performances. Sadly, we dont have the talent to compete consistently at this level.

This WI team does not earn any respect. They don't even know the rudiments of test cricket. But this is what happens when you play a 2nd string team so long. The good players eventually go and you are stuck with the incompetents

difference is the t20 team has actually won two world cups and is widely regarded as the first great t20 team. When nicholas referred to the WI as short of brains.....isd this side he was referring to

My thought was based a) on what I had seen in Australia, first during the World Cup and then during the recent Test matches against the Australians(a second string side captained by a second string captain who was devoured by AB and Guptill).........But it was a throwaway, not a considered judgement, and frankly, pretty damn lazy because it did not take account of the different personnel.

You know teams with lara did not win, infact he on;y toured SL once.......but at least we were not disgraced. That SL team was a great side with murali and vaas(and mahela, sanath and sanga). Most teams that traveled their lost, including an autralia side, ranked no 1 in the world. This current SL team is probably their worst since full status. This is the same team that England whitewashed twice in two years

NYCGURU 2021-11-22 12:53:35

I beg to differ on your point that Shiv was not a talented batsman. I am sure that his hard work played a role in his success but to be able to handle the quickest bowlers in the world, and to work out a way to play spinners as late as he did off the wicket, required special talent.

Jumpstart 2021-11-22 12:54:07

the difference is they are playing an exceptionally poor west indies side, one that has been virtually uncompetitive since holder took over, with the exception of a few flash in the pans. Thankfully he is gone, but his and cameron's tenure left this test team bare

a drawn with the no 1 team in the world inn 1999, our last series win versus pakistan in 2000, a win over india in 2002 in a series we were expected to lose, an ODI series win in india , a win over Sl in 2003, a wisden trophy over a very, very strong england side, our first test match win in South Africa against steyn and co, a very competitive series in Australia in 2009, where umpiring decisions significantly influenced results and where our captain scored 3 hundreds, a drawn series in NZ in 2008

nobody respects this side or the players on it. Proof of this that we have not played a series against Australia in 6 and going to to be 7 years. Which was unthinkable even 10 years ago. We used to play australia every two or three years. Nobody with an ounce of self respect wants to play this side

shock seriously. So a man who retired from test cricket with a batting average of 51.4 and made 11867 runs wasn't talented. Also, he had an average of 41.6 in ODIs and helped the W.I win on several occasions. Had it not been for those contributions, we would have suffered a lot more. His crab-like stance was unique and effective. Please, I beg of you, stop talking garbage.

they did......they still invited teams that were performing to their shores though. NZ( not a big three) has played australia 5 times in the last decade, thrice in the last 6 years, South africa(also not a big three) has played Australia 5 times as well, twice in the last six years. The same with pakistan. Which conforms to how often we used to tour australia. Rubbish excuse.

Shiv had lots of talent. Did he maximize it? Hell yes, you don't go to England at 18 n make a double ton vs.their U19 without talent. You don't debut @19 n make 60mtest runs without lots of talent.

Brerzerk 2021-11-22 17:48:19

Anyone who doesn't want to admit the vast chasm between the pre n post Hilaire test team is be disingenuous. For instance I believe if a Kuk Edwuds was drafted into a Shiv, Sars, Gayle team as a #6 he'd have had a good test career learning from them and Bravo-Ramdin @ 7-8. That's how test teams maintain longevity

say what you want about HH, but it must also be acknowledged that the WI was getting beat around that period and getting beat badly.

there were the odd occasion of a steady team performance or an individual one but we are fooling ourselves if we persist with this nonsense that, but for HH, WI cricket would have risen again.

trying to revise history or citing a one off victory or performance to buttress some silly argument that HH brought us here is dishonest in intent and disingenuous in reality

one just has to look at our 4 day batting averages and all round cricket to understand.

from around 1995 and some argue even before that, WI cricket was faltering but we like to blame certain persons, territories or events.

Always accusing ppl on revising history but can never correct them.

one just has to look at our 4 day batting averages and all round cricket to understand. The entire bajan and guyanese teams that have dominated the PCL are comprised of tried WI cricketers who mostly have been found terribly wanting

When last have the best WI members played fc cricket? You will judge gayle on how many times he played for jamaica? Facts are the rubbish WI cricketers comprise most of the FC teams because they cannot get contracts outside anywhere.

Cornwall's attacking play playg has served us well by putting SL on the back foot and enabling us to save the follow on.
Since our batting is so weak they should consider playing him for his batsmanship. Also DaSilva should be promoted in the batting order. Anything to improve our performance. Boy.... when the cupboard is bare..

Narper 2021-11-23 13:26:55

Shannon Gabriel bustles into the middle and brings a patch of rain along with him. The groundsmen rush with the covers and the entire square has now been protected. Guess, what! The sun is out and this could be a very brief delay. Fazeer Mohammed is on comms and what a wonderful delight it would be for the telly-viewers to watch him unfurl his emotions watching Gabriel bat. Remember the last time that happened? Yasir Shah...last ball of the over....fading light...Windsor Park, Dominica. Righto, enough said! We will be back soon with an (positive) update....
