West Indies pace bowler Shannon Gabriel remains very much a part of the plans of the new Desmond Haynes-led selection panel despite not being selected in the squad for the first Test against England.

The 33-year-old pace bowler, who has been playing for Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the West Indies Championship, was not named among the 15-man squad for the first Test or Presidents XI.  His omission is, however, due to sustaining a hamstring injury.

“Shannon was injured in the game that he played in Trinidad.  We were told by the medical panel that he is having a bit of a problem with his hamstring and would not be fit for selection,” Haynes told members of the media on Wednesday.

Gabriel needs to prove his fitness and that his body can still cope with the strains of International cricket.

Gabriel from his Test cricket beginnings has come up lame in almost every Series after each first Test. He may have played through pain in one or two of the matches in those Series but has hardly played all games in most Series. A one Test and out man.

I suspect that Desmond Haynes is being diplomatic and quite economical with the truth.It is painfully obvious that Gabriel is well past his best and is no longer able to play a full 5 days in a test match.He will soon be 34 years old and should retire from cricket rather than be in a situation where he is not selected.

Gabriel was showing signs of improvement but is constantly injured. He reminds me of the bowling version of Evin Lewis, talented but very often on the treatment table.

Gabriel has been breaking down from his very first Test series. I don't think any other WI fast bowler has been on the disabled list as much.

You must remember the days of Best, Collins, Edwards, Lawson and Taylor breaking down with various injuries.

Haynes shud look up the world central. If a soon to be 34 year old pace bowler with a history of hamstring problems is central to WI plans den we in real trouble
