Retired TT and West Indies batting legend Brian Lara, in conjunction with the Heroes Foundation, invited hundreds of children to the Queen’s Park Oval on Friday to watch day two of the second Test match between West Indies and India.

The children brought energy to the Scotiabank Stand. The initiative is called Sport Against Violence Energy (SAVE) with a goal to highlight the vital role sports can play in nurturing TT’s youth, fostering vibrant communities and consequently making great strides in curbing violence.

Lara thanked all the sponsors who helped him put on the project including Blue Waters and National Lotteries Control Board.

“A day out at Test cricket for me when I was a youngster was something that started for me at 6 am. Our parents would pack our bags and we would head to the Queen’s Park Oval and fight to get in with thousands of people.”

I wrote about this cherished history in a post a few days ago and many posters simply couldn't comprehend what it meant. I said inspite of WICBC/CWI or despite them, and regardless of how poor our boys are doing, Trini's should go out and support them because that oval crowd is a cherished part of our history.

It appears that Lara's generation is the last one to have wake up at 4 or 6 in the morning with food and drinks heading to the oval for clean family fun.

Sadly, this history has been neglected.

I recommend that cricket West Indies appoint Mr Brian Davis as coach, manager and chief selector since he is the only one that seems to understand where we are as a cricket nation and where we need to be

the older ones among us remember that. Children playing cricket during the breaks on the edge of the ground. everybody with a transistor to ear even though the cricket right in front of them.
