An interesting question in the current edition of The Atlantic. The author, a former Conservative M.P., posits that when measured by GDP per capita; Britain is poorer than the poorest state in the U.S.

Mississippi even with new manufacturing, tech jobs and military bases is still poorer than Britain I think. I also factored in the federal govt subsidies

Good article but GDP/purchasing power doesn’t tell the full story. Lots of that GDP figure is military expenditure that don’t reach the people nor their economy. No Brit will go bankrupt nor die from unaffordable healthcare It is one of the states that refuses extra Federal Medicaid Money (Obamacare) money that would add real meaning to GDP. Unlike military spending all of that would reach the economy, jobs, commerce…
