AI and T&T's security..an impossible task

The Editor,
T&T Guardian
I read with mirth your editorial AI and T&T's security, in which you remarked that in matters of national securityparticularly in this age of rapid technological advancementsT&T appears to be several steps behind significant global trends amidst the backdrop of swift technological progress. T&T has acquired a substantial number of marine boats in order to address the issue of its permeable borders. Many of these boats are currently stationed at Staubles Bay, but they are not operational. When such information is disclosed, the Prime Minister displays a fit of anger. The Prime Minister acquired two vessels from Australia, one of which has unfortunately encountered a grounding incident and is presently situated on a different Caribbean island for necessary repairs. Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) is currently facing a challenge with its border security. Specifically, there are issues with the functionality of container scanners at the country's ports. The Prime Minister acknowledged that there is also a clear presence of corruption among police, port authorities, and customs officials.
A recent discovery of a methamphetamine laboratory has prompted speculation on the possibility of additional similar facilities in Trinidad and Tobago. Is it possible that this 3D printer with firearms is the only one of its kind in existence in T&T? As technological advancements continue to progress, numerous nations are observing a rise in various operations.
Since 2013, individuals have engaged in the production of firearms through the utilization of 3D printing technology within the confines of their own residences. In the past, these devices were rather unsophisticated, having the capacity to discharge only a single round before becoming inoperable. However, significant progress has been made in recent years. Presently, it is feasible to produce untraceable firearms such as AR-15s, AKMs, semi-automatic handguns, and other similar weapons without the inclusion of a serial number, registration, or the requirement of a background check.
Until recently, the most viable option for enhancing a semi-automatic rifle such as the AR-15 was to employ 3D printing technology to fabricate the lower receiver, which is the component subject to firearm regulations. In order to assemble a functional firearm, users still needed to purchase tangible magazines, triggers, and barrels to supplement the kit. Assuming possession of a 3D printer, specifically one priced at approximately $250 as advised, alongside fundamental manual tools, the remaining tool expenses for constructing the barrel amount to roughly $100. Subsequently, each subsequent firearm necessitates an expenditure of approximately $100 for components. It is feasible for an individual with technical expertise in construction to fabricate a FGC-9 within a time frame of fewer than seven days. An individual lacking prior experience has the potential to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills within a span of a few weeks, enabling them to construct the desired outcome.
The individual in question is currently 26 years of age and completed their undergraduate education in the year 2020, obtaining a bachelor's degree in the field of computer science. One individual was raised in a family that held a favourable disposition towards firearms and was first exposed to the concept of 3D printing during enrollment in a secondary education institution. Gunsmithing was not a primary consideration when he made the initial purchase of his printer. The advent of gun printing commenced following his discovery of online resources detailing the fabrication of AR-15 lower receivers through additive manufacturing techniques. He made approximately five attempts before successfully producing one, and it remained functional for almost 2,000 iterations. This experience served as a catalyst for his decision to engage in the advancement of 3D-printable gun creation. He actively engaged in the phenomenon known as the "social media boom" of 2018, wherein the proliferation of 3D-printed firearms expanded beyond its niche origins and gained a substantial online following.
Is there any contention over the potential non-compliance with such regulations in Trinidad and Tobago, given the inherent untraceability of those weapons? Trinidad and Tobago is currently experiencing a significant influx of traceable weapons, which poses a formidable challenge to law enforcement agencies in effectively curbing their proliferation.Currently,T&T is regarded as one of the most perilous nations globally, occupying the sixth position in terms of risk assessment. The efficacy of drones in Ukraine has been demonstrated. What is the total number of drone imports that have entered Trinidad and Tobago, given the presence of its porous borders?
The implementation of slaughter bots represents a single measure among other necessary actions to address the risks associated with the proliferation of AI-enabled technology in the possession of unauthorized individuals.Slaughter bots are a modern weapon that is part of a growing number of intelligent systems that can use data on their own, predict what people will do, collect information, do surveillance, figure out future goals, and carry out a variety of tasks without human help. One must contemplate the potential negative consequences that may arise from the utilization of these technologies in the commission of criminal activities.
The proliferation of such technologies commenced in 2018,and the introduction of these technologies has become a matter of concern only recently for the government of Trinidad and Tobago.
