Majority of the disaster affecting small villages around Marakesh. Adobe buildings have crumbled. The most vulnerable again face desperate conditions.

In pictures: Powerful earthquake kills hundreds in Morocco

Cobble stones and cement ancient building techniques will not be left standing to such an earthquake,as some pictures show.

Bricks when used must be reinforced with rebar and then concrete poured around rebar, pictures show this was not done.
Very sad... sad sad

Aftershocks will come during the next 24 hours, some buildings have been compromised so expect more destruction to follow as aftershocks continue..On the scale, each increase of one whole number results in 32 times more strength.

I feel so sad
Those were some of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet
On weekends when I’d drive up into the mountains, absolute strangers in these villages will invite you in for hazelnuts and tea, wanting absolutely nothing in return. cry

As a Moroccan looking Guyneez, I want to send out my condolences to the people of Morocco. sad

WOW . What a disaster.
Seen pictures that remnind me of those I saw after Kingston's 1907 quake too.
Building practice looks the same. Bricks without rebar.
That Kingston disaster led to a completely new building code that included
steel and at least four feet below ground foundation for most if not all structures.

Hope the powers that be rally to Morocco's plight with all the needed help.

Honestly from the time I heard Morocco had an earthquake, I thought there would be a lot of deaths. More than it actually is right now. Most of the cities are pretty old. If it had hit Fez, then that would have been seriously catastrophic because it’s an old decaying city. Morocco actually has some really good musicians like Jil Jilala and Nass el Ghiwane.
