Only in T&T...

After being barred from entering the Treasury building to change cheques on Monday because her shoulders were exposed, Arouca caterer Allison Skinner-Bacchus draped herself in a curtain she had in her vehicle and unintentionally reignited the national debate on the dress code for government offices. However, the Minister of Public Administration said yesterday the policies are being reviewed.
In an interview with Guardian Media in front the Treasury yesterday, Skinner-Bacchus said she refused to accept the two options when she was refused entry—either returning home to change or purchasing something more “appropriate.”
“I walked away, went back to my car and the only thing was watching me was a plastic bag and a curtain and the curtain telling me—aye, look me here. So, I say come here, we going to the bank. So, I pick up my curtain, come back and as a normal Trini, I could’ve taken the curtain and throw it as a shawl over me but I needed to make a point,” she said.

“I didn’t know what the point was, at the time, so I open the whole curtain and drape it like a superhero (cape). When I came back here the security was in stitches...she opened the bank, ushered me in very politely. I went in the line, do my business, come back.”

Woman wears curtain to enter Govt office,

Stop public service policing of fashion
NEWSDAY SATURDAY 24 OCTOBER 2020

THE EDITOR: I was outraged to read that an 85-year-old man was denied service at the St James Licensing Office because he was wearing short pants. This is madness. In the midst of a pandemic they have put this man at risk for a second time by having him return to the office.

This foolish dress code for government offices has to be abolished. The public service is not a private entity. The staff and buildings are supported by taxpayers who are being denied service by petty bureaucrats who have assumed the role of fashion police.

High-flying CIC, 'Naps' meet in SSFL

Today, "Naps" and St Mary's will hope their players find their goal-scoring boots again, as the two teams meet in one of the marquee SSFL matches from 3.30 pm at St Mary's College Grounds on Serpentine Road, St Clair. Naparima won the first two editions of the premier division in 2014 and 2015, and they went back-to-back again in the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The SSFL then had a two-year hiatus due to covid19, and Naparima weren't able to find their championship touch last year as St Benedict's and Fatima College won the two national titles on offer.

Elsewhere, 2022 premier division champions St Benedict's College will go after their first win of the season when they host East Mucurapo Secondary at the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin, while San Juan North Secondary host Pleasantville and will aim for a second straight win after defeating Benedict's 4-3 on Wednesday.

There were three teams with 100 per cent records when the fifth round of the Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division began yesterday. But now there are only two.

Leaders Naparima College improved their goal difference even further with a 3-0 win over Malick Secondary, thanks to goals by Jaron Pascall, Jkwon Bailey and Tevin Pantor, while San Juan North handed Arima North Secondary their first defeat since their return to the top flight when they edged their East Zone derby 1-0.

However, Fatima College could not find a way to beat St Benedict’s College yesterday. For one fan, St Benedict’s won the battle of the rhythm sections.

Yesterday’s scores:

Chaguanas North 1 St Anthony’s 10 (Alon Wilson-Wright 3, Andell Fraser 2, Jean-Marc Thomas 2, Theo Cravadore 2,Mordecai Ford)

Naps, San Juan on five-game win-streak in SSFL

Four-time Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) premier division champions Naparima College and San Juan North Secondary maintained their perfect starts to the 2023 season, as they both got their fifth straight wins on Wednesday.

Naparima defeated Malick Secondary by a 3-0 margin to maintain their lead atop the standings on goal difference.

San Juan moved up to second spot as they eked out a 1-0 win over Arima North Secondary at the Arima Velodrome, courtesy of a goal in first-half stoppage-time time by Jaheem Danclar.

Fatima College (13 points) remained unbeaten but they slipped a place to third spot, after playing to a goalless draw against reigning champions St Benedict’s College (five points) at the former school’s ground in Mucurapo. After a cautious start, both teams fashioned good chances throughout the 90 minutes, but their finishing left a lot to be desired. Benedict’s TT under-17 forward Malachi Webb was arguably the most dangerous player on the evening, as his bustling and direct running often troubled the Fatima defenders. Whenever Webb breached the Fatima defence though, he found a worthy nemesis between the uprights - goalkeeper Tristan Edwards.

San Juan North, despite early possession, almost went behind in the 28th minute though as Bishop's captain Kerron Arthur raced on to a left-side centre, and from the top of the area, he failed to get the ball on target, as the ball sailed high over the crossbar.

What I can tell you is that it will be a tough match,” Samlalsingh said.‘Naps’, as they are popularly called, is third on the chart with 21 points and a win could put them in the leading position, providing that second-place Fatima College wins their match against Arima North Secondary at their Mucurapo Road ground in Port-of-Spain.

Fatima open five-point lead as race for SSFL title heats up

FATIMA COLLEGE are now five points clear of its closest pursuer in the race for the SSFL title with just three rounds of matches to go in the Boys Premier Division.

However, a late season surge by slow-starting St Benedict College now sees the 2022 defending champions move up into second place-- on goal-difference--as early season leaders San Juan North and Naparima College both dropped points.

At the lower end of the table, Chaguanas North will be relegated while joined by Pleasantville Secondary. And Bishop’s High School (Tobago), too, if they lose in mid-week will drop to the Championship Division next season.

Runner-up in the League to St Benedict’s last season, Fatima (31 points) summarily dismissed Bishop’s 3-0 yesterday, for a tenth win of the season. Meanwhile, St Benedict’s (26 points) saw off Queen’s Royal College 4-2 at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, thus joining San Juan North (26 pts) in second.

Third before yesterday’s round of matches, Naparima College drew for a third consecutive time, when held 2-2 by Speyside in Tobago, and dropped a spot in the standings. Fifth-placed St Anthony’s College were stunned 4-2 by Trinity East and on 22 points are now level with both Presentation College (San Fernando) and Arima North Secondary.

“Pres” were held to a goalless draw by St Mary’s College, while Arima North picked up a valuable three points-- while struggling to breakdown cellar-placed Chaguanas North-- with a slim 1-0 win.

At Moka, Pleasantville Secondary kept on the fast route to demotion to the Championship Division, but showed a glimpse of the team they could be potentially, scoring five second-half goals in an 8-5 defeat to East Mucurapo.

Mucurapo led 8-0 early in the second half, with Brandon Parks scoring a first-half hat-trick. But to Pleasantville’s credit they did not just roll over and hit back with the final five goals of the high-scoring match.

In the first half, Pleasantville goalkeeper Khylon Charles took the ball out of his net six times as East Mucurapo ran rings around the Southerns. But boosted by a brace and deep penetration by the number 10, Kelon Williams, Pleasantville rallied late in the game and their five goals actually included two spectacular long distance chips over Mucurapo goalkeeper Dayshaun Alexander.

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS:

Fatima College 3 vs Bishop’s High 0

San Juan North 1 vs Malick Sec 1

St Benedict’s College 4 vs QRC 2

St Anthony’s College 2 vs Trinity East 4

East Mucurapo 8 vs Pleasantville Sec 5

Fatima coach on SSFL crown: 'It's in our hands'

FATIMA COLLEGE, guided by coach Hutson "Baba" Charles, will look to secure the school's first Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) premier division title when they meet four-time premier division champions Naparima College, from 3.30 pm on Saturday, at Lewis Street in San Fernando.
Fatima (34 points) have a five-point lead ahead of both St Benedict's College and San Juan North Secondary on the 16-team table and will clinch the title with a victory. A draw would be enough if St Benedict's and San Juan also drop points.

The premier division format was introduced in the 2014 season, with the seven titles thus far going to South zone schools. Naparima are the winningest team with four trophies. Shiva Boys Hindu College (2016), Presentation College San Fernando (2017) and Benedict's (2022) have won the other titles in the premier division era which observed a two-year break due to covid19.Fatima College beat Benedict's in the national intercol final last year, but they also lost to St Benedict's in last season's "Big 4" premier division final.

On enemy territory, Charles wants Fatima to end a national league trophy drought which goes back to 1978.

FATIMA DRAMA
Double injury time strikes give North Zone school 2023 SSFL title

FATIMA COLLEGE were losing, had captain Jaden Williams and two members of staff red-carded and were largely outplayed by Naparima College, before scoring twice within a lengthy added-on time period to defeat Naparima College 2-1 at Lewis Street, San Fernando.

With the drama caused by Caden Trestrail’s thumping downward header, Fatima College collected a vital three points, which won them the 2023 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) title, with one match remaining against North rivals St Mary’s College yesterday.

Yesterday’s victory was sudden, even shocking. The champagne was on hold. Outplayed for large portions of the match, Fatima only came alive in the final 12-minutes of added-on time for stoppages.

QRC blank Arima North in Premier Division's final round

Queen's Royal College (QRC), St Anthony's College, and outgoing Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) premier division champions St Benedict's College were among the big winners in the league's final round of matches on Friday.Benedict's (35 points) may have relinquished their premier division title to Fatima College, but they ended their league campaign on a high as they got a thumping 4-0 win over Malick Secondary to consolidate second spot on the 16-team table.

Newly crowned premier division champions Fatima (40 points) also ended their league campaign on a winning note, as they blanked fellow North zone school St Mary's College by a 1-0 margin at the latter school's ground in St Clair to finish the season five points clear of their nearest rivals Benedict's.At the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, Presentation College San Fernando (31 points) consolidated fourth spot as they got a big 5-2 win over East Mucurapo Secondary.
