amaica Cricket Association (JCA) Vice-President Dr Donovan Bennett wants the Government to move quickly on a pledge to renovate the country's premier cricket facility, Sabina Park.

Bennett told the Jamaica Observer this was essential if the country is to have a chance of staging a tri-nation series set for next year.

The series is to form part of teams' preparations for the Twenty20 (T20) World Cup to be co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States in June 2024.

"I would ask [the Government] to make some money available to do the necessary retrofitting to bring Sabina Park up to international standard. I say this because I'm aware there is a tri-nation series planned for early next year — about March or April — that is to involve West Indies, South Africa, and possibly Pakistan… as a sort of warm-up for the T20 World Cup," he said.

"If the retrofitting is done on time, Jamaica could more than likely be rewarded with that series without any bidding cost at all. The only cost that would be incurred is getting the park up to international standards, which would not just be an investment for that tri-series but would be an investment with long-term effects," Bennett, a medical doctor and a Cricket West Indies (CWI) board director, explained.

I agree, Sabina Park badly needs a face-lift. Right now, the place looks like an old lady who has lost her teeth leaving only her incisors.
Sabina Park looks woefully unfinished and needs those empty spaces to be filled in with bleachers stands. The people in charge of Sabina Park need to know that aesthetics is an important aspect of any modern sports venue. That makes the place more inviting. Therefore, not only the stands, but the field and pitch need to be paid attention by the grounds people. Sabina Park has been associated with too much history for it to be treated this way. I look forward to a beautifully refurbished Sabina Park where I can proudly go with family and friends to enjoy the most beautiful sport in the world, cricket.

The government of Jamaica spent untold millions to do an almost complete overhaul of Sabina Park in 2007, prior to the Cricket World Cup-that's merely 16 years ago. I have never seen but a few dozen folks attend any cricket match at Sabina Park, despite the capacity been wrong-headedly increase to close to 30 thousand.

Why should more money be wasted by the Government of Jamaica on the privately owned Sabina Park?

Surely there are more pressing needs and national priorities for Jamaica!

Take a good look at QPO - its members keep it in excellent condition. Then again compare the Savannah to Heroes Park. We do not maintain public spaces and the private sector always wants government to maintain their interests.

Same crap with Bourda - make the members maintain it.
