HEADLINE: Ganga queries youthful omissions from Red Force Super50 picks

CaribbeanCricket.com Oct 12, 2023, 8:51:10 AM

The omission of rising cricket talents from the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force team for this year’s CG United Super50 Cup has ruffled some feathers among the local cricket faithful.

The 14-member team was announced on Monday. In it were the likes of the “experienced” but ageing Jason Mohammed (37), Shannon Gabriel (35), Sunil Narine (35), skipper Darren Bravo (34), Kjorn Ottley (33), Khary Pierre (32), Yannic Cariah (31), Evin Lewis (31) and Terrance Hinds (31).

The other players are Akeal Hosein (30), Mark Deyal (30) Tion Webster (2cool, Joshua Da Silva (25) and Jayden Seales (22). The squad has an average age of 31.

When TT missed out on the West Indies Championship (four-day/first-class) title for the 18th consecutive year in April, three months later, former West Indies and Red Force captain Daren Ganga asked why the national selectors were awarding retainer contracts to veterans such as Mohammed, who, in his view, had no real chance of making another WI team.

Asked his thoughts on this year’s Super50 Cup team, Ganga felt once again, the selectors may have got it wrong.

“Every selection panel for franchise teams should have a philosophy of how they go about selecting players for their franchise squad. That philosophy must have consideration for giving their team the best chance of winning the title (Super50), but at the same time, they must be able to project young talent.

“They must also be able to balance experience with youthfulness and to understand the tier of cricket they’re operating in."

Will Ganga now be accused of being a hypocrite by the tits here, now that he asked the very question other posters asked?

I agree with Ganga, give the younger players an opportunity and motivation to continue improving. The Jamaican and Barbadian selectors did the same thing, they selected players close to being over the hill. Jamaica's team might be the oldest cricket team at the one-day cricket level anywhere in the cricket world. Why Trinidad did not give young Simmonds a chance when he made runs last year in the competition. How come Simmonds from Barbados has disappeared when he showed so much potential when he was given the opportunity?

Get a taste of the go it alone mentality.

T&T elderly squad.
These fellas have something to prove after the asswhuppin they received in the CPL

Many of them would’ve been unavailable if they had won the CPL.

Doosie

Be nice to Jumpy ..he studying Civil Engineering ..so he can help Guyana build its infrastructure...

Under Bassarth leadership we have failed in producing young players to fill the void that's currently showing.

Notice the void already the amount of over 30 aged players in the team

Of Interest, lets see the injury reports when the tourney starts .

Some of these old guys need to make easy for younger players.

What has given them the opportunity though is that CCC and West Indies Academy have largely obsorbed many of the young hopefuls.

Is there any interest by the older guys to play international cricket? Why shouldnt some of the younger players be allowed to play in their territorial teams and be mandated by CWI?

This would leave room for more up and coming players with to feature in CCC and West Indies Academy

Their have been many comments over the past two decades about the cricket talent in the WI but young players lose interest because of lack of pportunity. If the goal is to improve WI cricket, and qualify for major tournaments then we must find the talent. CWI needs to mandate that the territories include atleast one new young promising player each year. Each territory continues to select players that have no chance of playing at the highest level in any format because of talent/skill or age, and these players do not perform but it's their name recognition. The winner of any CWI tournament does win a large pool of money therefore the focus should be on the big picture and the betterment of WI cricket.
Over the past 40-years WI have lost several very good players to Canada, US, etc... because they we not afforded the opportunity or even encouraged. To the best of my knowledge Carl Hooper was the exception.

I believe Hooper had the opportunity to migrate to Canada but chose to stay in Guyana against the wishes of several family members but I stand corrected.

I disagree with Ganga, these youngsters should be representing the Academy or CCC, from performances they should be selected for a regional team, the next goal for the youngsters is making the West Indies team, solely by consistency, not one or two good performance.
Why is Anthanaze and so many players trying to be Allrounders at this time?
Anthanaze should be working on his bowling in the Dominica league and work fully on developing his batting during the regional tournaments.
