ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) thanked Sunil Narine for his service to West Indies cricket during his international career. The talented spin bowler announced his retirement from international and regional List A cricket on Sunday, ahead of the final preliminary match for Trinidad & Tobago Red Force in the CG United Super50 Cup.

The 35-year-old made his debut for West Indies in India in 2011 and his last appearance was also against India in Guyana in 2019. He played in West Indies colours in 122 matches, which included 6 Tests, 65 appearances in One-Day International (ODI) and 51 in T20 International (T20I) cricket.

He was a member of the West Indies team which won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2012 when they beat Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. He played a crucial role with the ball in the victory, with three wickets as West Indies won by 36 runs.

The man deserves a proper send off, but here in the West Indies we don't know how to honour our champions. They should have organized an all format series for him to go out on a high. We didn't do it with lara and chanders, and now we didn't with Sunil Narine either

Without his 25 test wickets. Our cricket would have been further down in the doldrums. Each of his 25 test wickets brought joy to the faces of millions of West Indians and won us games from the jaws of defeat.

Walk well in your retirement, Legend.

No amount of praise would be enough to recognise his immense contribution in the form of his 25 test wickets (and 91 odi wickets)

It matters little than some in the Barbados and Guyana cricketing public choose to have a different view. You are free to hold the wrong opinion.

Well said, Halli. Tits should honour their own and not let the insularity of others keep them back from so doing. Yes, SP may have been called for chucking on occasion but the fact is that all his wickets were undoubtedly with legitimate balls or else the decisions would have been not out. All the dot balls he bowled were legitimate or else they would have been no balls. He was ranked at Nos 1 and 2 in the world for part of his career. He made himself available to play for his home country. All of that sends a loud message about a man who has overcome adversity time and time again to get back to the top. Those who dont want to honour him must look within themselves to see if they are capable of achieving what he has.

Narine did well for himself throughout his years in cricket, but a question. If Narine is ceremoniously honoured, what message does it send to upcoming cricketers, that having an illegal action is okay?

Red Force teammates hail Narine

Meanwhile, Narine’s Red Force teammates Akeal Hosein, Jason Mohammed, Jayden Seales, and coach David Furlonge all paid tribute to him when they spoke to Guardian Media freelance reporter Vinaya Boodram, during the team’s training session at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, yesterday.

AKEAL HOSEIN: “He’s a magician. We all call him a king, not only in this dressing room but in many other dressing rooms as well. That name sticks with him. And he’s a king for a reason. He’s excellent at what he does and he’s also a brilliant team player as well. He’s always willing to share some advice and help you learn new tricks. So hopefully we can do this one for Sunil Narine. Thank you very much for all that you’ve contributed to West Indies cricket.”

JASON MOHAMMED: “I just want to say happy retirement to him. Obviously, he’s one of the best, if not the best, spinner to ever play for Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies. For me, it was a pleasure playing with him from youth cricket to senior team level for Trinidad and Tobago. So just want to wish him all the best in his retirement. He’s been a good server for the country and West Indies cricket and it was a pleasure being a part of his journey so hope he enjoys his retirement.”

JAYDEN SEALES: “So obviously, Sunil retiring is a big loss for West Indies cricket and Trinidad and Tobago cricket as well domestically. He’s been a great help to not only myself but also all the players who have come up around him, the spinners. In CPL this year, he gave me a bit of advice on bowling and I’ve used it and still working on the skills that he helped me with. So obviously, losing him around the setup will be a big thing for everyone.”

DAVID FURLONGE: “I mean, Sunil has given all, he’s given his best for his country, for the region. I’m glad for him. I’m happy he has now decided. Before the tournament, he mentioned to me that it would be his last tournament. So with that, I’ll wish him all the best foot forward. Sunil has been working with several young players. Several of these young players have been sort of copying him in terms of his deliveries and so on. So yes, maybe shortly, we will have somebody coming up like Sunil. I won’t like to call any names, but you know we have Brian Charles in the team there now, who Sunil has been working with. So you know, we’re looking to Brian, sort of taking over the mantle from Sunil in a couple of years.” (CMC)
