Cricket West Indies (CWI) lead selector Desmond Haynes has called for the selectors on the various cricket boards in the Caribbean to put greater emphasis on young talent, as the Windies look ahead to the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

On Monday, CWI announced a 15-member squad for the December 3-9 One-day international (ODI) series against England, with Haynes saying the Windies selection panel has made investments in players such as Alick Athanaze, 24, and the pair of Keacy Carty and Shimron Hetmyer, both 26.

"I think it is up to the territories to show us the talent we have in the region. We should expose (these players from an earlier age). It is not right for them to be playing for the (West Indies) under-19s and doing well and not getting the opportunity to play for their franchise teams," Haynes said during a CWI press briefing on Monday.

"When you are selecting sides in regional cricket, we are seeing the same players all the time.

dessie sounding senile......didn't he watch the super 50.....only guyana and tt played experienced sides. the rest were very young teams because those were the only players they had. and the performances aside from one or two players were frighteningly woeful

Guyana had plenty youngsters..some of them were experienced, but they young

We let guys get stale by not replenishing the stock. Bim's been doing it for years and let the interest of the youth fall away to other things. The pool has indeed shrunk because of community cricket. We just play name brand cricket now not competitive cricket. You got a name you in the team no fight to represent Bim anymore.

Merit before age….

Thanks Mr. Haynes - if West Indies has a chance to make it back to top, it's an investment in the young players that going to get them there. Once the younger see that they have an opportunity; that will motivate them to perform. Steel sharpens steel, not old dead wood. Old dead wood is good for a fireplace.

Thank you Dessie Haynes for saying what was needed to be said. That is difference between the WI and the other top team in cricket, the other teams invest in their young players. The Academy team just showed why the youth need exposure, they had problems chasing any score over 100 runs.

I get the sense that the COS, WI cricket administration in general, and more than a few “fans” are quite unhappy that T&T with their “experienced” team handily won the regional super 50 tournament.

COS wants more young players to get exposure

We’ve done that in the past. It hasn’t worked. But we/he hung up on young talent.

How many of our players develop later on, especially batsmen, and not immediately?

They have no problem continuing to pick older players like Floyd Reifer and Shamar Brooks though.

His Bajan accent grew more evident as he talked anout players in the region not being able to practice past 8 pm and lamented how other countries can practice till 11pm.

As if being able to practice at nighttime is a primary critical factor in development.

Then bizarrely, he threw out 200 million dollars in what WI cricket needs from the ICC

play the best players and forget about age, CWI administrators always seem to focus on the future at the expense of the present.

If the best players will not help us qualify for the next World Cup because they are too old, then it's best to investing NOW. Give the younger players the experience and exposure,; they are the building blocks needed for tomorrow.

The West Indies just missed out on the World Cup and i read/heard all sorts of comments about what a tragedy it was to not representation from the Caribbean.
So I will ask how do we get an invation to next World Cup?
Without a vision the people will perish, and I will hope that with the support of CWI management Mr. Haynes can have a dialog with the territories about the future of cricket in the region. The older players will not get you to the big dance.

You guys don't fully understand ....the most blaring omission of emerging players this year was the Barbados selectors who continued to reward established players although they were not performing.

1 Barbados dropped young pacers Dominic Drakes and Ramon Simmons. Drakes performed well in one match then was dropped..poor Simmons after an outstanding debut season was not even selected by the Bajan selectors this season yet Haynes and co selected BOTH for the playoffs.

2. Shian Brathwaite and Rivaldo Clarke scored centuries in the trials...Brathwaite in particular scored his century against the Barbados selected eleven itself yet Kraigg who was absent and failing in the English county setup and clearly not alone day batsman could walk in the list A team along with Brooks who came from failing in the WI Qualifiers and out performed by many young bats in the trials.

3. Even McCaskie who was selected for the WI A team last year and scored a big century in the trials had to be benched for Kraigg Brathwaite the apparent Bajan one day superstar.

4. In that same trial play off match Barbados first team with WI players vs the Rest, a young leg spinner routed the Bajan WI players .....that youngster Motara is not even close to a Bajan selection!

It’s as if what’s staring them in the face is invisible

The top teams make it to the dance by winning tour matches.
Clearly we need a balance of established and emerging players.
There is no justifiable excuse for leaving Bravo out of this squad while selecting either Dowrich or Hety.
I studied this institution and I know all the nastiness men used and use to select their picks over talented emerging players.
