Essequibo is now part of Venezuela

Venezuelans on Sunday voted to claim sovereignty over a large swathe of their oil-rich neighbor Guyana, marking the latest escalation in a long-standing territorial dispute between the countries.
Voters were asked if they supported the establishment of a new state in the contested area, known as the Essequibo. Venezuela’s National Electoral Council counted more than 10.5 million votes, the country’s local media stated. The number of voters were not specified, however, and the Associated Press reported that few voters could be seen at polling sites throughout the voting period.

Leaders of the United States Army First Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB) were in Guyana just days ago, ahead of today’s Venezuelan referendum.
The SFAB and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) met November 27-28 as part of the United States and Guyana’s strong military-to-military partnership, the US Embassy in Guyana said in a statement on November 28.
“The US and Guyana defence forces discussed upcoming engagements to include strategic planning sessions and processes to enhance both countries’ military readiness and capabilities to respond to security threats,” the Embassy said.

I wrote West Indian history at school in Trinidad and what I remember was Esequebo was part of Venezuela during the years of Spanish Colonization,I checked it on WIKIPEDIA and it says the same but added, when the Brits took over it abitrarily as part of the then,British Guyana.Come een Snoop Dg,
I was hoping that Guyana continues to become one of the richest countries in the world, that for sure would be an upliftment for the poorer islands, they won't have to bother about those nasty peoplet the IMF,at the moment Guyana is producing 625000 barrels of oil per day, that is up there with some of the biggest producers today.

I hope you duh have plans to go to Guyana for Christmas:
Amid a referendum that will see Venezuelans asked about the future of a chunk of neighbouring Guyana that Venezuela currently claims ownership over, Canada has adjusted its travel advisory to warn travelling in Guyana near the border.
On Friday, the federal government updated the travel advisory for Canadian travellers in Guyana, which currently warns Canadians to “exercise a high degree of caution,” citing Sunday’s referendum as a cause for concern.
“The security environment could deteriorate at the border between Venezuela and Guyana due to the ongoing discord over the Guyana Essequibo region and the upcoming referendum in Venezuela on December 3, 2023,” the advisory update states.

When I was doing research back in the 80s I spent some time in the North West. It was fun talking to the mi,Italy peeps on both sides.
Dis is one ole story from 1841.
Of interest is the fact that Venezuela begged di Americans to use the Monroe Doctrine to settle this border dispute.
All I know is that the land and all its resources really belong to the indigenous peeps on both sides.

I could live with that!
Leave the indigenous alone, they treat the land with respect and live off of renewable resources.
The only thing Venezuela and Guyana interested in is tearing down everything for gold, diamonds, lumber, oil…
