McGarrell Out of Guyana Squad

Georgetown Cricket Club all-rounder Neil Mc Garrell has been surprisingly dropped from Guyana's 14-man squad for the upcoming regional Carib Cup and KFC Cup competitions scheduled to start on January 4.

The 34-year old former West Indies player, who has taken 276 first-class wickets, is one of many other notable omissions from the squad, which will be captained for the first time by Narsingh Deonarine.

Guyana begins its quest for double championship honours against the Windward Islands in Grenada.

The team comprises four new faces in Deon Ferrier, Veerasammy Permaul, Royston Crandon and Jeremy Gordon, according to a report in the Guyana Chronicle.

West Indies batsmen Shivnarine Chanderpaul is out with fatigue and Ramnaresh Sarwan's ankle injury makes him unavailable for selection.

So too is national opener Sewnarine Chattergoon, who is sidelined with an injury sustained in the West Indies 'A' series against Sri Lanka 'A'.

Deonarine, who has played 56 first class matches, will have experienced Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) batsman Travis Dowlin as his deputy.

Of the newcomers, Berbice's 18-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner Veerasammy Permaul, who plays first division cricket for Albion, grabbed 31 wickets to be the leading wicket-taker in the TCL Youth tournament this year.

Malteenoes Sports Club versatile all-rounder Deon Ferrier, Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club all-rounder Royston Crandon and Berbice energetic fast bowler Jeremy Gordon are the two other new faces in the squad for the three away matches.

Left-handed batsman Azeemul Haniff has been recalled to the team after a two-year absence. He is likely to partner regular opener Krishna Arjune.
