Mali Richards, the heralded son of former West Indies legend Viv Richards, has been named in Leeward Islands squad to play in the regional Under-19 tournament in Jamaica next month.

The appearance of the 18-year-old Mali in the Leewards Under-19 squad is sure to set tongues wagging around the Caribbean, especially since recent reports suggested he might consider the possibility of representing England, where he was born.

Mali, born in Somerset while his father was playing for the county, is currently studying at Cheltenham College. He has represented Antigua before but has also played for Gloucestershire's second XI last year. Reports out of England say he has attracted interest from county sides Gloucestershire and Worcestershire.

The Leeward Islands Cricket Association (LICA) named Mali in an 18-man team to be captained by Austin Richards. The side also includes promising players like Gareth Matthew, Larry Joseph, Ronald Stevens, Gavet Hughes and Javid Charles.

The Leewards are defending the Under-19 title. They open the tournament against Barbados on August 1.
