LEICESTER, England (CMC) – Assistant coach Ezra Moseley has assured there is no need to press the panic button despite watching West Indies Women slump to their third straight warm-up loss here yesterday. The Caribbean side were once again below par as they went down to India Women by five wickets at Leicester Grammar School, following up losses to a near full-strength England and Southern Vipers side last week.“This is the third game we have lost and some people would start to panic a little bit. We’re not panicking, this is all part of our preparation,” the former West Indies seamer said following the defeat.“Today though, I think we did some things well. I think we had a good start with the batting but we didn’t really get the score we were looking at on a pitch which was a bit on the slow side.”He continued: “After having the Indians 80 for five, I thought that we were in with a chance of winning the game. Somehow, it seemed as if we went flat from the 25th over right up to the end of the game and that is something we constantly talk about where we say we have to play a full 50-over game. We certainly didn’t play a full 50-over game today.”
LEICESTER, England (CMC) — West Indies women leg-spinner Afy Fletcher has warned against taking the euphoria of last year's Twenty20 World Cup triumph into the upcoming 50-overs World Cup starting next week. The 30-year-old all-rounder, a member of the successful side which beat Australia in India to take their maiden World title, said the formats were different and West Indies needed to evaluate each game carefully. “I think this is a different version of the game, so I think we need to look forward to this version and not carry any T20 pressure from the last World Cup,” Fletcher said. “We need to look forward and take each game step by step, and once we do that we will not [put] ourselves under any pressure, but just carry our basic knowledge and apply it in each game.” Fletcher has been joined in the 15-member squad by the likes of World-rated players Stafanie Taylor and all-rounder Deandra Dottin for the June 24 to July 23 tournament. Opener Hayley Matthews, former skipper Merissa Aguilleira, and Anisa Mohammad — all members of the championship-winning side — are also expected to feature prominently. Fletcher, who has played 27 one-dayers since making her debut nine years ago, said West Indies needed to take a calculated approach to the tournament and guard against complacency.
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Cricket West Indies (CWI) president Dave Cameron has made it clear that left-hander Darren Bravo will remained sidelined from selection until he removes the offensive tweet which resulted in him being sent home ahead of the Tri-Nations Series in Zimbabwe last November.
Speaking in a candid interview with Massy Insurances Line and Length Network, Cameron said the tweet – labelling him “a big idiot” – was the kind of behaviour CWI was not prepared to accept and that Bravo needed to face up to this reality.
“Let me make it very clear: What Darren Bravo has to do first and foremost is take down the tweet. Every day that tweet stays up, it is an infraction,” Cameron said.
“Secondly, he needs to accept that he’s done something wrong and then we can move forward from there.”
He added: “But we’ve decided as an organization – it came up at the board meeting – [that] we’ll put it to the disciplinary committee, let them have a look at it and determine if there is further action to be taken and how that will go. We’ll move it from there.”
Controversy erupted last November after CWI announced the 28-year-old Bravo had declined a central contract for the period up to September 30, 2017.
It emerged subsequently that Bravo, one of the most experienced members of the Test squad, had rejected the offer of a Grade C contract, a downgrade from his previous contract.
The 50 overs practice match between the Red Force and West Indies is currently in jeopardy after Cricket West Indies (CWI) expressed its displeasure with Darren Bravo’s inclusion in the Trinidad and Tobago team. The Windies, led by Bajan Jason Holder, are preparing for a one-day series with India scheduled to bowl off at the Queen’s Park Oval next Friday.
Bravo, 28, has not played for the West Indies since November 3, last year. The left-hander had his match contract for a tri-nation series with Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka cancelled after making a disparaging tweet to CWI president Dave Cameron where he called him a “big idiot”.
Newsday understands that CWI has indicated to the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TT CB) that Bravo should be prohibited from playing until he removes the tweet and apologises to Cameron.
