West Indies coach Phil Simmons admitted yesterday that his decision to ban popular cricket commentator Mohammed from interviewing the regional players prior to the start of the second Test against Australia in Melbourne a few days ago, may have been a bit harsh, but he had to do it to protect his players.
But yesterday on i95.5FM radio programme Simmons said he does not hold grudges and will approach Mohammed, whom he has known from Under-19 cricket, to tell him how he feels about what had transpired and sort things out.
MELBOURNE, Australia CMC – Embattled West Indies have come in for high praise from several unexpected quarters, following their fight-back against Australia in the just concluded Test match.
The Caribbean side lost the game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by 177 runs inside four days but showed significant improvement, as their batsmen turned in a gutsy display in both innings despite the defeat.
Australia coach Darren Lehmann, as well as several highly-regarded members of the media, applauded the young Windies team for the way they rebounded especially following the nightmare in the Hobart first Test which ended in three days with an innings and 212-run loss.
“I was really pleased the way they fought back … after being six for 90 on day two and then obviously batting really well on day three,” said Lehman, a former Test cricketer.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Shimron Hetmyer has been named as captain of the West Indies Team for the International Cricket Council’s Under-19 World Cup 2016.
The top-order batsman will play in the tournament for the second time. He was a member of the West Indies squad at the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2014 in the United Arab Emirates.
He is one of two players in the squad with first-class experience along with fast bowler Alzarri Joseph.
Hetmyer has played six matches for Guyana Jaguars in the WICB Professional Cricket League.
Joseph made his debut for Leeward Island Hurricanes a year go and has so far captured 17 wickets in five matches, with best figures of 7-46.
The ICC Under-19 World Cup 2016 will be played in Bangladesh from January 22 to February 14.
Prior to tournament, the Windies will face Bangladesh in a three-match 50-overs series, which will form part of their preparation camp.
Speaking on the squad, Chairman of Selectors Clive Lloyd noted: “We have put together a group of players we believe will perform for the West Indies. We see them as future Test cricketers for the West Indies and this tour is an opportunity for them to be exposed at the international level against strong opposition.”
The Hero Caribbean Premier League has announced a number of changes to its player draft format for 2016 which will once again see some of the world’s greatest T20 players join the “Biggest Party in Sport”.
The new rules have allowed the six franchise teams to sign one “marquee” player as a free agent before the draft process begins. Over the last two months the teams have been in negotiations with the best players in world cricket and will be announcing their marquee stars in the first few weeks of the New Year.
The number of players that the franchises can retain before the player draft has been reduced from four to three whilst the squad size increases from 16 to 17 for the new season.
