Jaguars, Pride clash headlines pivotal fourth round

WICB Press Release:
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – One of Caribbean sport’s longest-running rivalries will again grab the headlines, when Guyana Jaguars and Barbados Pride meet in the feature match of the fourth round in the Digicel Regional 4-Day Tournament, starting on Friday.

Action resumes in the R4Day following the one-week, early-season break – and the top-of-the-table clash between the two sides that inaugurated first-class matches in the Caribbean more than 150 years ago, again takes centre-stage.

In addition to the key match, this round gets going tomorrow, when Jamaica Scorpions host Trinidad & Tobago Red Force at Sabina Park in another crucial contest – and the following day, Windward Islands Volcanoes and Leeward Islands Hurricanes meet in another bitter rivalry game at Windsor Park.

With a 6.6-point spread dividing the top five teams in the R4Day, a victory and a huge collection of bonus points will be critical, as the teams try to separate themselves as they count down to the break following the next round of matches to accommodate the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, plus the Regional Super50 Tournament.

Sendings-off and bat restrictions planned after MCC world committee meeting

Cricket is set to introduce sendings-off for the first time next year, while the size of bats is to be limited.
Umpires will be given the power to eject players from a game for serious disciplinary breaches.

MCC World Cricket Committee member Ricky Ponting explained that sanctions needed to be implemented.
"We're talking about a significant change to lower-level cricket because it has got completely out of hand down there," the ex-Australia captain said.

MCC (the Marylebone Cricket Club) remains the guardian of the laws and spirit of the game, and its world cricket committee - established in 2006 and comprised of 12 current and former top international players - has been a leading independent voice on the game's major issues.

The new laws will be implemented at all levels of the game from 1 October 2017, subject to approval by MCC's main committee.

CPL revenue drop for T&T

While the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) continued to bring increased revenue overall to the Caribbean territories hosting matches, there were reduced earnings in Trinidad and Tobago in 2016. According to a CPL media release yesterday, visitor spending was US$2,616,625, down by 25 per cent from 2015 when the Queen’s Park Oval hosted the finals of Hero CPL.
The CPL further said that “total media value was down by 46 per cent to US$2,970,740.” While T&T had been one of the territories initially bidding to host the finals of this year’s CPL, St Kitts and Nevis were eventually awarded the matches. The release further added that 512 local jobs were created and 3,297 hotels rooms filled when T&T hosted the finals.
Also, according to the CPL’s Economic Impact Assessment (EIA) survey, there was a combined television audience of 10.5 million for the Trinbago Knight Riders’ matches, while 45,072 fans attended the games at the Queen’s Park Oval. Overall, however, the CPL in 2016 brought a third straight increase in revenue to the region.
