Dear Sports Editor, Cricket fever is about to take over Guyana! Firstly on the field with the tri-nation series and Caribbean Premier League. Off the field WICB & CARICOM are in town for board meetings and the CARICOM cricket sub-committee will make a cataclysmic decision on whether they can or won’t disband the WICB, as many observant fans, media and former legendary players want. Are Guyanese cricket fans ready to stand up for players who won’t be selected for tri-series? Is the Guyana cricket media ready to call out WICB President Dave Cameron for failing to solve the GCB cricket crisis? Are the Guyana government and sports ministry ready to stand with CARICOM? After many local fans would have obviously celebrated greatly after the men won the T20 world cup title by now it should have dawned that half of that squad won’t be in Guyana next month. For anyone still unaware according to intransigent and ridiculous WICB selection policies, players such Darren Sammy, Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Bravo are definitely ineligible – possibly too also Kieron Pollard and Sunil Narine.
West Indies Women Cricketers from across the region have teamed up with telecommunications giants Digicel, to send video messages of love and appreciation to their mothers today. Prolific batter Hayley Matthews from Barbados, T&T’s Merissa Aguilleira and captain Stafanie Taylor from Jamaica, all agreed that their mothers played priceless roles in their lives and as such have listed them as the real champions. In a release yesterday the trio agreed also that their mothers are deserving of the ultimate recognition and their public shows of affection, as the country celebrates Mother’s Day today. After watching the video from Stafanie Taylor, sister-in-law turn surrogate mom Tracy Grant-Taylor, could barely find words to express her feelings, only to echo loudly, “I feel loved.” Stephanie also expressed how she felt, saying “She’s my sister in law and she means the world to me. She did so much for me growing up that I consider her my surrogate mother. Tracy gave me the support I needed through hard times and celebrated my success with me throughout my career.
South Africa have "rested" star quick Dale Steyn from their one-day international squad for next month’s Caribbean tour to play Australia and the West Indies.
The Proteas have opted to leave Steyn behind for the Caribbean tri-series, following the 32-year-old’s recent struggles with a shoulder injury that saw him miss Tests against India and England.
Speaking to cricket.com.au last month, Steyn expressed his desire to continue representing South Africa in all formats of the game. "(To just) play Test matches would probably be the wise thing, but I just want to play everything. I get 'FOMO' – the fear of missing out – so I want to play,” Steyn said.
In a move that would turn the city into a Caribbean kingdom, the Sixers are chasing Carlos Brathwaite, the ice-man who created history last month when he won West Indies the World Cup final by smashing four consecutive sixes in the final over.
Should the Sixers win the race to sign the hulking all-rounder, it would pit Brathwaite directly against Thunder dynamo Andre Russell in a cross-Sydney West Indies rivalry that would light up the BBL.
Currently on an IPL deal with the Delhi Daredevils worth nearly $1 million, Brathwaite is undoubtedly the hottest property in Twenty20 cricket right now – a Windies superstar with all the flair of Chris Gayle, but without the ego.
Organisers of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) are disputing statements from top government ministers in Guyana that Trinidad and Tobago has been chosen to host the finals of the CPL.
CPL’s Chief Executive Officer Damien O’ Donohoe says, contrary to public comments from Guyana’s Finance Minister Winston Jordan and Junior Sports Minister, Nicolette Henry, no decision has been made on which country will host the finals.
Media reports from Georgetown have quoted Jordan as saying TT outbid Guyana to host the Caribbean showpiece, weeks after his country expressed an interest in the final matches to bolster golden jubilee year celebrations.
“The CPL made a bid we reviewed it in Cabinet…we were to review it again and then we heard that Trinidad outbid us,” Jordan told reporters on Wednesday.
