ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Next year’s Caribbean Twenty20 Tournament, to be staged from Sunday, January 6 to Sunday, January 20 in Trinidad and St. Lucia, will be played under a new format.
The marquee, annual West Indies Cricket Board tournament will feature the seven regional teams – Barbados, Combined Campuses & Colleges, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, reigning champions Trinidad & Tobago, and Windward Islands – in 23 matches.
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said Monday that a US$20 million claim made by the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) in a lawsuit against the WICB has been overstated.
However newly appointed CEO of the WICB Michael Muirhead has declined to speculate on the value of the claim saying only that the WICB estimates the figure to be less than what WIPA is claiming.
The claim is the subject of one of several ongoing court disputes between WICB and WIPA which represents about 300 cricketers in the Caribbean.
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The West Indies Cricket Board has extended condolences to the family of former Trinidad & Tobago player and sports administrator, Lance Murray.
The 91-year-old Murray, a former director of the WICB, died on Sunday at his home in his native Trinidad at the age of 91.
He was the father of former West Indies vice captain and wicketkeeper, Deryck Murray.
“It was with a sense of sorrow that we learned of the death of Lance,” said WICB President Dr. Julian Hunte. “I know these feelings are shared by all who knew him and worked with him inside and outside of cricket.
“Lance and I served as directors on the WICB, and I always found him an excellent colleague. He was disciplined, articulate and was a true Caribbean man.”
He added: “Although he represented T&T, his focus was always what was necessary, and was an able representative of the WICB at ICC board meetings in the past.
“We know there is little one can say at this time, but we would like to express our very sincere sympathy to his family, and offer them our support at this time of their bereavement.”
A former leg-spinner, Murray played three first-class matches for T&T between 1956 and 1960, and was also a skilful footballer.
He was inducted into the T&T Sports Hall of Fame almost two decades ago for his role as a sports administrator.
Murray was among 50 people honoured by the T&T Cricket Board last month during a special event to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the two-island republic’s independence.
West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels has signed with Melbourne Renegades for the second season of the Big Bash League. Samuels joins the former Sri Lankan offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan as the Renegades' overseas players for the season.
Samuels is fresh from a successful World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, where he finished the overall third-highest run-scorer with 230 runs with three fifties at a strike-rate of 132.94. His game-changing 78 off 56 balls in the final helped set up West Indies' title win.
Renegades coach Simon Helmot said Samuels will be a welcome addition to the top of the order that includes the openers Aaron Finch and Daniel Harris.
The West Indies will play three day/night matches among the five one-day internationals (ODI) against Bangladesh during their tour which starts next month.
The day/night ODIs are the last three on December 5, 7 and 8, all in Mirpur, which is also the venue for the only Twenty20 international under lights on December 10.
The venues for the first two ODIs on November 30 and December 2 are to be confirmed.
There will be an opening three-day match starting November 8 before the first two Tests, which begin on November 13 and 21.
