Shillingford puts West Indies on top

Get the sign-writer ready. If Shane Shillingford's first day of Test cricket in his home nation was an audition to have a stand named after him at Windsor Park, it couldn't have gone much better. Shillingford finished the day with four wickets and put West Indies in a strong position as the Australian batsmen struggled to handle his bounce and turn, and at the close of play West Indies had given themselves a chance of the victory they needed to draw the series.

Rain ends prospect of intriguing finish

As it had threatened to do the weather had the final say in Port-of-Spain and end the prospect of a fascinating finish after both captains took up each other's challenge to force a positive result. Michael Clarke declared to leave West Indies a target of 215 in 61 overs then Darren Sammy promoted himself to No. 3 as the hosts reached 53 for 2 when bad light forced them off followed shortly by rain.

The initial asking rate for West Indies of 3.52 was considerably more than had been managed for a sustained period at any stage of the game. However, Sammy's attacking mindset put his team ahead of the rate as he took on Australia's bowlers, especially Ben Hilfenhaus who he hit for 14 off three deliveries.

You can't blame West Indies talent deserting the Test team

Flicking between West Indies v Australia on one channel and Roayal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors on another is a weird experience. It's a bit like watching Usain Bolt run the 100m final one minute, then following a handful of runners jogging through the practically deserted countryside.

The sight of Chris Gayle bashing Pune's bowling to smithereens, including five successive sixes in one over, brought the struggles of West Indies into sharp focus.

Peter Siddle and James Pattinson to return home

Cricket Australia (CA) today advises that fast bowlers Peter Siddle and James Pattinson will return to Australia from the West Indies due to back soreness.

Australian team physiotherapist Kevin Sims said: “Peter Siddle developed some back soreness late in the first Test against the West Indies and scans conducted in Trinidad showed the early signs of a low back bone stress injury.
“He was subsequently ruled out of the second Test and after further consultation we feel that to prevent this injury developing any further it is in Peter’s best interest for him to return to Australia to rest and for appropriate physiotherapy to ensure he is fully fit when next selected for Australian duties.

“James Pattinson had an episode of acute low back pain after fielding and throwing awkwardly late on day three of the second Test. We have since monitored his condition over the last couple of days and the initial investigations suggest that while the injury is not serious there is insufficient time for him to recover to play in the 3rd Test match.
“As such, we have today made the decision for James to return to Australia to prevent this injury developing any further and for him to receive the appropriate medical and physiotherapy management.”

Peter Siddle leaves this morning while James Pattinson will depart for Australia tomorrow morning.
No replacement player will be sent to the West Indies.
