Several times, both bees and wasps. But there was this one time (recorded in my autobiography) when I didn't get stung:

The investiture ceremony was set to begin at 9:00 a.m. Monday morning and we were expected to be in place by 8 o’clock. It was a public holiday, National Heroes Day, and the installation ceremony had always been popular, attracting many hundreds of people for the pomp and ceremony with full military attendance and precision. With all that in mind I arranged to get there before 7.30 partly to ensure convenient parking and partly to secure good seats for the members of my party.

The manicured grounds of the Governor-General’s residence sparkled in the soft sunlight of the early morning but it was not with dew; it was the water from the deluge the day before. Everyone would be accommodated under giant white tents. The honourees’ tent was east and to the right of the dais where we would go to receive the awards from the Governor-General.

To avoid the wet, the soldiers laid down a series of ply-board strips as a walkway from our tent to the Governor-General’s dais with the intent of keeping our feet dry and mud-free, and they placed three of their number behind this walkway, one in the middle and the others at either end. But somehow this walkway was not considered safe and by the time my name was called they had moved to stand in front of the walkway, and so I walked on the still wet grass to receive my honour. The Governor-General said some kind things and expressed his thanks for my work in Canada, and then, with the newly placed insignia around my neck I returned to my seat at the end of the third row.

In front of us and slightly to my right was the major tent in which the Prime Minister and his wife, Ministers of Government, Senators, members of the Diplomatic Corps, Foreign Affairs officials, some family members and the vast gathering of members of the public were seated, all dressed to the nines. Behind them were four ambulances complete with attendants. To my immediate right was a huge tree under which were members of the army, uniformed members of the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and an open-air radio broadcasting booth from which the proceedings were beamed to all Jamaica. I made myself comfortable and was watching the rest of the awards when it happened.

I was wearing a new suit and shirt for the occasion, and the cuffs were much roomier than usual. Suddenly I felt something hit my right wrist under the shirt with a mild stinging sensation and I flashed my hand downwards to expel it. I did not see anything come out and again focused on the awards and the recipients.

But then I began to feel movement under my shirt. It felt ominously like something crawling up my arm. When the thing arrived at the top of my shoulder I tried to pin it with my left hand. But it was slightly out of reach. I got up and sought the help of one of the soldiers standing nearby asking him to squash whatever was under my shirt. He exerted some pressure on the little bulge and I returned to my seat.

But the little tyrant was not quite immobilized, for the next thing I knew it had regained consciousness and was now crawling down towards my breast. Now it was within my reach and thrusting my left hand between shirt buttons and under the shirt, I got a hold of the creature, squashed it, threw it down to the ground and stomped it under foot.

It was a bee.

All this frantic activity on my part had apparently not diverted anyone’s attention from the spectacular awards ceremony and I returned to my seat without too much fuss. But I wondered two things. What if it had been another type of insect, like a scorpion, and I had to remove my jacket and shirt there in the full glare of such august company? The second thought was this. What if the bee had made its itinerant expedition under the clothing of a woman! Happily neither of those occurred and, as they say: "no cup no break: then no coffee will throw away."

Have scar on thigh from jack spaniard/marabunta to Guyanese sting. Once as kids my friend took a broom n stuck it in nest over garage they attacked him. To make a long story short he hollered for his dad for hours after. Man I can still feel the pain closest to it was when I held a live wire. lol
They go for the eyes by the way

We were stung regularly by hairy worms every July-August holiday because we spent nuff time in the guinep tree in New Amsterdam. We used to wonder if it produced more hairy worms than guineps and it sure produced the latter.

Still granny and my aunt always had dettol or peroxide on stand by - nothing more.

doosra 2014-08-09 14:02:33

actually, the regular marabunta ent nuttin yet

there is a specie we call the 'jacoo' - they lime around mango trees. they give instant fever and pain you to the bone

In reply to Runs

I learned a method to safely kill them before they have a chance to react.

Put a container on a stick with petrol in it,and gently raise it below the nest, the trick is that they always fly down when leaving the nest,so automatically the fly into the container(halfa bottle) and as my dad used to say,"dey look like dey dead since yesterday",totally motionless like insect fossils frozen in time. Usually none escapes.. cool

In reply to doosra

We have the 'hairy worms'/'chinni'/caterpillar here, we seldom come into cotact with them for good reason, their sting is common knowledge and legendary here.

Boy dem maribunta just evil, they swarm you in an attack,it's pure advantage. My childhood friend got attacked high up a mango tree, and had to take multiple bites while trying to safely climb down. surprised

There is also a very small yellow one that's probably even more painful than a jep..

What about 'tactac' big shiney fast fast black/brown ants, they just appear outta old barks, old bamboo etc and swarm your hand with multiple bites that must hurt like bullets!

Happened to me already, you feel really really facked up after trying to just reach for a lil mango by some random tree in the countryside, feel like yuh get ketch and chop for tryin to 'tief' a mango. Man I wish was jack Spaniard instead.. lol

BeatDball 2014-08-09 14:28:58

Yeh they love fruit trees, they have a hanging medium sized to large almos acorn to kinda pear shaped(depending on stage of development) brown/grey paper mache looking nest.
