In reply to Chrissy
Sorry to hear. One of my first umpiring tutors. Him and Johnny.
He lived for cricket. RIP
In reply to Chrissy
A great little man. RIP Douglas Sang Hue.
//
As a lil bwoy, ah used to hear 'umpire sang hue'....Anyway, RIP.
Thought about him some time ago. Fastest index alive. Sorry to hear. Cricket has lost a good, unheralded man.
In reply to Ewart
Yes indeed
Sang Hue, 82 years old at the time of his passing, had been ailing for sometime.
He stood in 31 Tests over two decades, starting at Sabina Park in his native Jamaica in 1961.
In 1972-73 Sang Hue became the first umpire to stand in all five Tests in a series in the West Indies. He did so again the following season against England.
In reply to Chrissy
he was the first umpire I knew of, May he rest in peace
Respect to Douglas Sang Hue.
R.I.P.
One of the first umpires I heard of apart from my mom's cousin Johhny Gayle.
RIP

In reply to Chrissy
Cool, yes Johnny has a big family in Southfield, St. Bess. Never met him but my uncles always spoke about him...with a lot of pride
In reply to bimbo
One of our official posse was from Southfield - know the place well.
Was talking about her last night - this year is ten years since she died-seems like yesterday. Her mother is still alive in Southfield - batting at 92.

RIP... Mr Sang Hue!
I am not sure if many people are aware of Douglas Sang Hue's lasting legacy to umpiring. As far as I know, Sang Hue was the first umpire to use signals to beef up his decisions at the first class level. For example; a bowler's appeal for an LBW would be followed by him pointing down the leg side to illustrate that the ball was missing the leg stump, or if high , he would hit his thigh to show that the ball was high. He was praised by the visiting English reporters and some of the English players on their 1959-60 tour for this innovation. Many local umpires adopted this style.
RIP Mr. Sang Hue
For me Sang Hue and cricket just go together....Sang Hue was there from my cricket beginning.
RIP
Good man. RIP Sir.
May God Bless your soul.
RIP little "big" man...
In reply to Chrissy
Not too sure bout that...
Gayles get spit out by the dozens in Clarendon as well...from waaaay back.
In reply to bimbo

RIP.

No no no no no no.
His lasting legacy was his refusal of a PLUMB LBW decision against Lawrence "Homemade Bread" Rowe at Sabina Park against NZ when Rowe was about to score a century to follow up on his first innings double. I think Rowe was on 99 (or close enough) and Sang Hue's refusal immortalized Rowe.
If allyuh doan know, hask somebaody.
Best regards nevertheless!!

I am sure that Sang Hue must have been aware of his predecessor Perry Burke's experience in 1954. Burke gave out JK Holt LBW vs England when he was in the 90s. Burke could not go home for a few days. I am sure that this act of CHARITY towards Rowe went a looong way in solidifying Sang Hue's popularity with his country men. You think Sang Hue was a damn fool?
In reply to SpudsMcKenzie
Rowe was 'run out' on 67 in the 2nd innings but was not given by Sang Hue. Nothing about LBW on 99ish.
Please don't revise history.
[b]In reply to Drapsey[/
Like i hinted, may not have been 99, but Sang Hue did turn down a PLUMB LBW decision.
Get Donne Bwoy D to investigate.
In the meantime, keep reading!

In reply to Drapsey
I recall...there was a photo in the newspaper of wicketkeeper Wadsworth appealing for an LBW against Rowe in that same second innings. Rowe was standing watching SangHue give the 'not out' decision.
If memory serves me correctly..that happened before he had scored....not sure though.
That 1972 New Zealand team was very weak. It must have been an embarrassment to skipper Sobers that he could not defeat them in a home series.. All five tests matches ended in a draw...
he was part of my growing up watching and understanding this game called cricket
In reply to Elsie
Tell Drapsey yeh.

In reply to Elsie
Spuds' interest here is not the legendary umpire Sang Hue, but Rowe who he thinks somehow affected his own ability to thrive as a cricketer. That bitter taste from his Rowe's experience (whatever that was) has lasted to today where he can't pass up any opportunity to disparage any Jamaican player if not anything Jamaican.
In reply to SpudsMcKenzie
how do you know it was plumb ,in the days of one camera coverage?
In reply to Drapsey
Spuds is a Rabble Rouser, Sh1t Stirrer
Dont take him serious
.
RIP Umpire Sang Hue
Sang Hue was the best WI umpire in the last 50 years , wasn't Sang Hue that gave out one of our men at Bina '68 that cause the riot?
In reply to Drapsey
Right on the ball!
But 'im carry a special belly fi Rowe because he was so good.

The reaction of the commentary team. Men were embarrassed in the booth.

Man, I was there that Monday when Rowe batting with Foster made the 30 odd runs to complete his second century of the innings. I don't recall either batsman being bothered by the bowling up to the declaration, after Rowe reached his hundred. That day was my first time seeing a live test match; remember it well. Have to agree with Drapsey that you are trying to get the JA massive agitated. So Spudsie go siddung and hol a piss and go finish the sequel to the "Great Guyanese Novel". But wait, the original is still not completed. Whappen, Ewart and Chrissie start charge yu fi editing service?
In reply to CWWeekes
Hey...Everton....is amazing how allyuh say things thinking they would lend credibility when in fact it does the exact opposite.
Listen up bwoy.......u were AT THE GAME....thats exactly the point. You would not see something like that live....and u werent LISTENING. You prolly had side view and u would be clueless bout LBWs. You may even have missed that delivery.
Now, when yuh watching TV and LISTENING, you HEAR the commentary team......u see replays etc etc etc..........u HEAR discussions long after the event. You were there live and not privy to any of this.
Yuh get it???? So yuh just fucked up yuhself with that declaration. It explains why u r totally clueless on this incident.
It's really too easy to deal wid some allyuh yeh.
Now KYS.
@RMc@
Oh, and by the way.....keep following re the novel
In reply to SpudsMcKenzie
