vulcan 2014-11-02 21:34:43

I was reading an article just now and it says that what we call guinep in Jamaica, you call it ackee in Barbados. Is that true? I never heard that before.

Melicoccus bijugatus, commonly called Spanish lime, genip, guinep, genipe, ginepa, quenepa, chenet, canepa, mamon, limoncillo or mamoncillo,[1] is a fruit-bearing tree in the soapberry family Sapindaceae, native or naturalized over a wide area of the tropics including South and Central America, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti and other parts of the Caribbean.

It is called "ackee" in the countries of Barbados, St.Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, however, in the rest of the Caribbean, the latter name is used to refer to the related Blighia sapida.

lol...what do you call ackee, in Trinidad? Do you eat ackee in Trinidad? When I was in college, my Guyanese friends told me that they don't eat ackee in Guyana because it is poisonous.

From Emir

Can Hindu Fundamentalism help the WICB?

Will the Hindu PM's of Trinidad and BG lobby the Hindu Nationalist gang in New Delhi to exert pressure in the BCCI to save WI?

I believe this is going to happen for numerous reasons including New Delhi's quest to be seen globally as a super power with global influence and the governments of struggling Trinidad and BG and the various covert Hindu Nationalist groups in these two countries in order to gain credibility among their country men.

Isn't this ToldUSoEsque???

I like it,have eaten it here already..from Jamaican acquaintances, from since I was small.

People in the country cook with it too, fishermen garden men etc..

But it's not widely used in households like say plantain etc.

defeyeant 2014-11-04 07:05:51

In reply to bravos

dont think we had any ackee trees (jamaican ackee) til recent, pretty sure most bajans havent a clue what to do with it, so we duz call um Jamaican ackee as far as I can tell smile

nick2020 2014-11-04 07:17:06

In reply to defeyeant

shock

That isn't really true about the trees only being recent or not having a clue. But it is not very popular.

Bravos we call both ackee. Like defeyeant said people would call it Jamaican Ackee to differentiate if you were just having a conversation about Ackee but context usually takes care of it. We eat ackee and saltfish so you would know it is not guinep and saltfish lol

And technically we call guinep ackees because of the bunches of them where I do not think you call Ackee Ackees.

defeyeant 2014-11-04 09:45:27

In reply to nick2020

Well I aint know about now but nobody in Barbados I knew was cooking ackee and saltfish when I was growing up. First tie I ever saw that was from Jamaicans when I came to Canada. Is only recently I hear friends home trying a ting wid it.

openning 2014-11-04 10:11:45

I grew up with a Jamaican Ackee tree in our district, found out what it was living among Jamaicans in Calgary.
Apart from the Jamaican Restaurant next to the Board Walk, I haven't seen Ackee on any menu in bim.
