Is this competitive cricket or Sunday fun mate?
In reply to cricketmygame
Looks like I have to come out of retirement!
In reply to cricketmygame
Once we played Port Mourant in a 20/20 our quickie uprooted his middle stump first ball, guy took gears and left the park. Parish/Deonarine Persaud, Reginald and Tyrone Etwaroo played. We won the game.
Gave an interview in the 90's to one of the local NY papers, claimed he was ill treated by WI selectors. I never thought he was ever in contention for a WI call-up.
The CC.com curry goat match is probably a bit more competitive that that match
Runs is runs tho!
In reply to Runs
You mean Keshwar Persaud? I remember playing with him and Tyrone (or was it Romain) and against them back in the day. Nice Guys and good cricketers.
In reply to JamMack
No Deonaraine, by the way Keshwar is from Shiv's village Unity, they produce good cricketers, his dad Adjodha also played for Guyana.
The Etwaroos were good, Romain would easily make today's WI side, excellent opening batsman, those guys are true gentlemen.
In reply to Runs
Keshwar son was a good cricketer too. Played with him growing up
In reply to cricketmygame
Ok I played with his younger brother Tim, also a good allrounder. Unity is up there with producing good cricketers but Port Mourant and Albion rules in Berbice. Sadly these days they produce nothing to speak about.
In reply to Runs
I also remember an interview when he insinuated that the selectors were being vindictive because of Alvin's playing in SA.
In reply to Titleist
What a load a crock, he was never spoken about as a contender back then. Not by the fans or media, perhaps by his family and villagers. Was a tough act to follow having a superstar for a brother.
How come Westdem not on this thread?
best in demerara.
In reply to jcveletta
Agreed
Hey a hundred is a hundred.Kudos to the man for keeping himself fit at 58 and bashing bowlers a third of his age around the park. There's many a poster on here who have never reached a three figure score

True dat. Can anyone give a cuss out like Deryck?
Dereck's bio and other stuff. A couple of the photos were about Alvin, not Dereck.
In reply to jacksparrow
Batting, or bowling?
In reply to Norm
Bishooesque stroke
In reply to Norm
Not stats that could have got one into the senior WI side in those days.
In reply to Runs
Derek was average at best. But he is world class cuss man. wot a disgrace to cricketers. Ask WISA cricket league. Dem invite Alvin for guest of honor. Derek demand him get free ticket. The president tell him he haff fe pay $10 like everyone. Derek put on a cussing pon de man

Romain Etwarro in his day was billed as the next big thing out of Guyana. A wristy smooth player who old timers around the region liked on first sight.
In the end though his runs just wasn't enough to break in. Like Sheldon Gomes of T&T everyone was left waiting till they could wait no more. Just didn't have the FC runs needed.
There are a list of very good players like him that just didn't break through for one reason or the other.
Jim Allen and the allrounder Victor Eddy from Leeward, Herbert Chang from JA, Shane Julien from Windwards immediately come to mind.
They had the class and runs but that damn door was locked down tight.
Oh hhhmm sorry.
This is another thread about the other Kalli who never made it.
Sad thing is he is probably better known around here, than all the others who actually played good FC and were really on the radar for bigger things.
This guy has more threads dedicated to him than his far more famous brother....lol.
In reply to Tagwa1
some chaps were "luckier" than others. Case in point, Timur Mohammed had a better first class average than Bacchus but Backy got the nod instead of him and was given a unusually long run given the class of players in that era!
In reply to googley
True, Timmy was an excellent timer of the ball, looks as if he completely abandoned cricket. These guys could have given back much to WI cricket, untapped wealth of knowledge not these present jokers they have.
In reply to Tagwa1
Dereck was a mediocre at best. There was another chap from Albion, Ganowri who was selected...most of the Berbice people were all shocked! That guy was less talented than Dereck!
During those days, if you did not play for Port Mourant or Albion you stood a tiny chance of being selected for Berbice, muchless Guyana.
In reply to Runs
won't you too, given the way he was treated?!! The man making millions now!

In reply to googley
Yes I would. Sen Gopaul was also pretty good.
I have no idea why Deryck or his fans felt he was so special
In reply to Runs
maybe his sledging (ie cussing) ability

Timur was pure class, brother. Somewhat similar to Gower. Faoud was a better fielder than him, however. When it comes to fielding, the ole timers say only Clive was better than Faoud!
In reply to googley
Those guys were good cricketers, Faoud did not live up to potential but he was a damn good batsman, head and shoulders above today's. I saw him in NY open batting and put lash on Ray Winters, Joseph and Solomon. They were bowling quickly too.
In reply to Runs
you think timmy get time fo these individuals running windies cricket?
In reply to jcveletta
Nope, he is a no nonsense type a fella, has extremely high standards.
In reply to googley
Bacchus run was not all that long as I remembered it. We can check but Viv replaced him early in India...192 and that was that.
He may have played one or two series.
I wanted to include Timor when I mentioned Allen, Chang ect.
Let me also contradiction myself. It was more than just FC runs, it was also the class and beauty of the batsman too. Timor fit all, except there was no place in the middle for him as for many other very good bats aforementioned.
In reply to Tagwa1
Not Viv but Haynes and later on Logie
I don't know how good any of these guys were that you fellas are talking about....I was not in the region and was not exactly following cricket at that time.
But here is a story about another Kallicharran brother from someone I know who came from their village. This fella says another brother name Stanley was the best cricketer in the family and rum was his downfall. I said it's hard to say how good he would have been if had gotten the chance. He didn't want to hear it. I suspect one's association with another player or some other factor probably influence his opinion of that player.
In reply to Tagwa1
Viv was already established in the WI team. Bacchus chance came when the "senior" WI team went to play for Packer! He started out as an opener. When the senior team came back in 1980, Bacchus was drafted in as a middle order batsman as he could not displace either opener, Greenidge or Haynes. He played a total of 19 test matches!
In reply to googley
You right. 4 years separate them 9174 and 1978.
There was someone who Richards replaced in India and made the 192 and then that was that. Was it a Guyanese bat?
In reply to Tagwa1
The Babulall! That was the tour he was discarded and Clive Lloyd was named captain. The Babu heard the news on the BBC then announced his retirement.
In reply to googley
Bacchus's problem was he played too
many shots way too early. When set he was a joy to watch, attacking batsman, true West Indian flair.
In reply to Runs
that flair got him into the WI side, IMHO. And what cost him his place too. the man loves to flash outside the offstump! When it connects its glorious to watch...but he missed too many times!
In reply to googley
Yep
